BROADCASTING

Page 2: Public service broadcasting ppt

What is public service broadcasting?

Public service broadcasting refers to TV programmes that are

broadcast for the public benefit rather than for purely

commercial purposes.

These programmes include local news coverage, arts

programmes and religious broadcasts.

It is neither commercial nor state-owned, free from

political interference and pressure from commercial forces.

Public Service Broadcasting vs Commercial

Broadcasting

Public Service Broadcasting is a state owned entity.

Public Service Broadcasting is usually viewed as a service that promotes the

interest of the state.

The kind of programs shown highlight cultural diversity of a country, and acquaint them with

traditional arts, crafts, and music.

Commercial broadcasting is privately owned by media firms, private limited

companies, and more recently by corporate houses.

Commercial Broadcasting is more interested in promoting the interests of advertisers and the corporate houses.

The kind of programs broadcasted are largely commercial. They usually include general

entertainment and these days, the famous reality shows.

set up by an Act of Parliament and comprises Doordarshan television

network and All India Radio which were earlier media units of the

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Prasar Bharati was established following a demand that government owned

broadcasters in India should be given autonomy like those in many other

countries.
