1·10REHEAD, Ky.--Master Chief ~lusician Gary Elliott is director and drummer of
the Commodores, the U.S. Navy's premier jazz ensemble slated to perform at Morehead State University Monday, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. in Button Auditorium.
The 18-piece band's versatility will be displayed in a combination of jazz and
popular music, offering a mixture of styles ranging from blues to contemporary rock. "Shifting gears is a challenge," says Elliott. "We've found that the variety of our music helps us attract diverse audiences.''
No stranger to music, Elliott performed with a philharmonic and jazz ensemble v1hile in college at Indiana University and has performed with numerous dance bands.
In the Navy, Elliott was a member of the ~1arimba Band and Commander's Trio specialty
units. He also served as division officer and a percussionist with the Navy Concert Band.
Based in Washington D.C., the Commodores is a specialty unit of the United States
Navy Band. The group was formed in 1969 and has toured the United States and abroad. ''we've built a loyal following," says Elliott. "Many people who first come to our
concerts are surprised to hear music quite different than what they expect from a military band."
For each concert, the instrumentalists and audio technician move their own gear and set up the sound.equipment. The audio man is in charge of volume levels and the
control board during the performance. Several of the members play more than one
instrument during concerts.
In addition to performing, the ensemble often conducts jazz clinics with high
school and college music departments. "The clinics give us the opportunity to offer playing tips to students and help the band directors work 11ith individuals," says
Elliott. "It's important for us to share our expertise with others.·"
The Commodores' appearance at MSU is sponsored by MSU's Department of Music.
The concert is free and open to the public.

MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY UPO BOX 1100 MOREHEAD. KY 40351 606-783-2030
Nov. 14, 1986 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
f~OREHEAD, Ky.--Two years ago ~1orehead State University didn't have a single student enrolled who had qualified as a finalist or semi-finalist in the National
Merit Corp. competition.
Today, as the result of a financially-attractive recruitment program aimed at academically-talented high school seniors, the University has 27 such students
on hand. For several of the highly-sought students, the decision to select MSU alio
was influenced by other factors.
Mark Manis of Greenup wanted to study at MSU, but thought he'd have to take his first fe1·1 years closer to home at a community college.
Since her sophomore year in high school, Stephanie Ann Garner of Louisville had
known ~ISU was the school for her. Garner and Manis realized their dreams thanks to the University's Distinguished
Scholar Awards program. Earmarked solely for National Merit finalists or semi finalists, it offers a fully-funded, four-year college education.
MSU's most prestigious scholarship program was launched in the fall of 1985 with
awards to seven National Merit students. Those seven returned to campus this fall and the number of new Distinguished Scholars almost tripled.
Noting the friendly atmosphere, the proximity not only to their homes, but also to metropolitan areas, and the quality education available, returnees Joseph Varacalli
and Kristi Spears, both of Portsmouth, Ohio, say they encourage other students to
at tend f1SU.
"I have to ~mrk hard to do we 11 in my c 1 asses, because the faculty--espec i a 11 y
the science faculty--make the classes challenging," said Varacalli, a psychology major. "I v1as scared my first year, but the people \~ere so friendly," said Spears,
whose father attended MSU. "You really get to know people because the school is not
so big," said Spears, an elementary education major. "The faculty members in my
department are just great."
Returnees Regan Brumagen and Teresa Fultz, both of Morehead, say their sophomore year is even better than their first year. While taking many of her general requirements
last year, Brumagen used the time to decide upon her major.

"This semester is the best,'' Brumagen said enthusiastically. She is majoring
in English with a journalism minor. Her enthusiasm was echoed by Fultz, a biology
major in the pre-veterinary program, whose double minors are chemistry and environmental sciences.
Fultz has taken advantage of the many special interest organizations on campus to augment ner classroom experiences. She is active in the Geology Club, Environmental
Sciences Club and the Pre-Veterinary Club of which she is secretary.
Pursuing a four-year degree in the para-legal program, Deborah Ross of Wellington
in t1enifee County last year discovered how to become better organized and to think
critically. This year Ross has enrolled in one of the Honors Program classes.
Distinguished Scholars new to the campus this year say they are amazed and delighted
at the small classes which result in personal attention from the faculty.
''The classes may be hard, but the teachers always take the time to work with us
individually,'' said Garner who fell in love with the campus when she attended a jazz
clinic while in high school.
t·1anis, a history major, noted that students weren't "treated like numbers. It's
even easier to find a faculty member 1~ith time to talk to you than it uas in high
school ,• he added.
''The faculty really want to help you," said Joseph Hoh of Alexandria, who is
majoring in mathematics and computer science. He said that MSU already has given
him opportunities as a freshman he might not even get as a senior elsewhere, including '
presenting a paper at a science conference recently at Miami (Ohio) University. "I'm
going to explore everything I can while here,'' Hoh added.
Distinguished Scholar Jamison Todd Graff of Covington says he is looking forward
to getting to know some of the faculty in his department even better since he has
been selected to 1·;ork in a science laboratory next semester.
Graff, who spent his senior year of high school as a student in Germany on a
Congressional scholarship, is majoring in psychology and biology with a German minor.
As a science student, the small class atmosphere is a great plus, but perhaps even

MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY UPOBOX 1100 MOREHEAD, KY 40351 606-7 83-2030
Nov. 14, 1986 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
~10REHEAD, Ky.--The final tally for r~orehead State University's 1986 .fall
enrollment reflects a 3.5 percent increase over the fall of 1985.
This fall's headcount enrollment is 5,894, compared with 5,695 last year, MSU
President A.D. Albright has announced.
Preliminary figures released to the media in late September showed a 2.8 percent
increase. At that time, Dr. Albright noted that the figures could change between
then and the enrollment reporting date set by the Council on Higher Education.
The increase reverses a pattern of declining enrollment which has plagued
Morehead State over the past decade, including·an 8.2 percent drop last fall from
the previous year.
In addition to the increase in headcount figures, t·1SU reversed the decline
in full-time students,·actually gaining a student over last fall.
Dr. A 1 bright attributed f·1SU' s improved enrollment to three primary factors.
"It was a combination of an intensive recruitment drive, an image-building
promotional campaign in the region's media, and the addition of a new program of
upper-division undergraduate course offerings at four t~1o-year college sites," ne
said.
