Course Description

This course surveys the principles, theories, vocabulary, and applications of the science of psychology.

The course is required of all Psychology majors. The course also fulfills the University’s general

education requirement for the social sciences.

As a general education course, you will learn:

a) The causes of human behavior and their consequences;

b) To understand how the study of psychology has evolved over time

c) About the relationship between historic and contemporary issues and will understand

contemporary issues with sensitivity to a rapidly changing, diverse, and complex world

d) How psychology applies to the practice of their discipline and to other disciplines, to society, and

to their own lives

e) To identify real-world problems related to psychology and to be able to evaluate solutions

f) To evaluate scientific research as it is presented in the popular media and become intelligent

consumers of this type of information

g) Learn about tools of statistics and biological sciences to analyze complex problems related to

psychology

This course is part of our new Inclusive Access program designed to reduce the cost of course materials

on the first day of class. If you wish to have a paper copy of the text, there is an optional loose-leaf

print version available for sale at the bookstore. Simply provide them with your name and student ID to

receive the reduced price.

If you have already purchased your course materials, I encourage you to return them if possible. We

have worked closely with the publisher and the bookstore to provide you with the best possible price.

We will be extensively using Connect, the website for The Science of Psychology textbook, and Top Hat,

the website for the Psychology Then and Now reader. An electronic version of each book is integrated

into Connect and Top Hat.

SmartBook is the publisher’s name for the electronic textbook within Connect. Part of SmartBook is

LearnSmart, which is an adaptive quizzing system. LearnSmart asks multiple choice questions and

adjusts those questions based on your responses so that it can focus on areas that you may need to

master. You will be using LearnSmart for every chapter that we will be covering in the course. Top Hat

contains 12 units with two chapters per unit; you will be assigned eight units. Each unit has one or more

short essay questions for you to answer to help develop your critical thinking skills.

Other Required Resources

Canvas is a vital component of the course. The course syllabus, lecture slides, and other course

information will be available on Canvas (https://canvas.okstate.edu/). Important information and

messages will be posted on Canvas, so be sure to access it regularly and often. There is a mobile app

available for both Android and iPhone. At least one written assignment will be submitted to Canvas and

plagiarism checkers as well. Copies of course handouts and important course information will be posted

daily. It is YOUR responsibility to read all materials posted for this course.

Course Requirements (1000 points possible)

1. SmartBook/LearnSmart quizzes (180 points [18%]): You will read 12 of the 17 chapters in

the text, and in each chapter is a series of LearnSmart quiz questions that help you master the

material. You will receive 15 points for each completed chapter’s LearnSmart quiz. THE DUE

DATES FOR EACH QUIZ CAN BE FOUND IN THE SCHEDULE AT THE END OF THE

SYLLABUS. Late submissions will receive zero (0) points.

2. Top Hat Critical Thinking Exercises (200 points [20%]: You will be assigned 8 units and

complete the critical thinking exercises associated with those assigned units. Each unit’s

exercises are worth a maximum of 25 points. Late submissions will receive zero (0)

points. Because PSYC 1113 is a designated “S” (Social & Behavioral Sciences) course, writing

assignments are mandatory. Therefore, you must submit ̶ ̶ on time ̶ ̶ all of the exercises for at

least 6 of the units. Failure to do so will result in an Incomplete for the course. Each submission

must demonstrate a substantial and sincere effort by the student (as judged by the instructor) to

address the topic at hand. Responses that do not meet these criteria will not be regarded as valid

submissions. Your written responses will be scored on response accuracy, as well as spelling,

grammar, syntax, flow, and APA style. If you submit the critical thinking exercises for only 6

units, you will receive grades of 0 (zero) for the two you do not submit.

3. Examinations (390 points [39% of total points]) - Three exams worth 130 points each:

Every 4-5 weeks we'll have a 130-point exam; 3 such exams will be given. The final exam will

consist of 3 "re-run" tests rather than an actual final. You may take any or all of them. Whichever

yields the higher score – the original exam or the re-run – will count as your grade for that exam.

There will be no make-up exams given, only the re-runs. To take a re-run, you must (a) have

taken that exam in the first place, or (b) have a valid, written excuse for having missed it. Travel

plans that conflict with exams do NOT constitute a valid excuse. Except in emergencies, you

must contact your instructor at least 72 hours prior to the test in order for an excuse to be

considered as valid; you can provide the written excuse later. The exams for this course will be

held during the regularly scheduled class time and in your regular classroom. The final exam for

the course is scheduled according to the course meeting time.

*Each exam will require a No. 2 pencil and an orange scantron sheet, which can be

purchased from the campus bookstore. NOTE THAT THESE DATES ARE TENTATIVE

4. Quizzes (80 points [8%]): There will be 10 quizzes over the course of the semester. These

quizzes are completely separate from the LearnSmart quizzes through your Connect text. There

will be 3 quizzes per unit and a syllabus quiz. At the end of the semester, I will drop your two

lowest quiz grades. These quizzes will cover key concepts from the lectures and your text, so

pay attention to the kinds of questions I ask. It will help give you some guidance on what to

study for the exams.

5. Research Component (120 points total [12%]) – 6 Required Credits worth 20 points each:

The field of psychology is research intensive. All students in this course will learn about how

research in psychology is conducted and interpreted. There are three options for fulfilling the

research experience component of the course. See the information sheet entitled RESEARCH

EXPERIENCES HANDOUT. Please note that if you are under the age of 18, there may be

alternative research experience exercises that you will complete. Please talk to your

instructor for more detail.

a. Important deadlines (see handout for details)

i. Friday, January 31 @ 5pm: Last day to receive 1 credit for completing the pre-

screener.

ii. Friday, March 6 @ 5pm: Deadline for first three (3) required research credits.

iii. Friday, May 1 @ 5pm (pre-finals week): Last day to earn the remaining research

credits.

6. Class Participation (30 points [3%]): Participation may be earned through a variety of ways,

including attendance, in-class activities, in-class discussions, etc. Be sure to attend class in order

to earn these participation points. If an activity requires work outside of class, you will be

notified via Canvas and the syllabus lecture schedule.

7. Extra Credit (Up to 50 additional points): Extra Credit can be earned up to a maximum of 5

additional research credits at 10 points each for a possible 50 extra credit points. Students may

obtain up to 50 points doing additional activities listed under the research component category.

See the research experiences handout. It is important to note that you are able to earn points

equaling 5% of your overall grade. NOTE: required research credits are worth 20 points

each; extra credit research credits are worth 10 points each.

Course Grading (The total number of points that are possible is 1000)

In order to receive the grade on the left, one must earn the number of points shown on the right.

Missed Work and Make-Up Exams

You will be allowed to make up missed work of any type that is graded only if you are ill, have a

personal or family emergency, or have a scheduled OSU-sanctioned event. You must provide

verification (e.g., a physician’s note) in order to be permitted to make up this work. It is your

responsibility to take each exam during its designated time and at the designated location. If you miss an

exam for a documented personal or family emergency, you may take the re-run on final exam day. If

you miss an exam with no documentation of a personal or family emergency, then a score of zero (0)

will be entered as the exam score and you may not take the re-run.

• If you miss an exam, you will be eligible for a make-up only for the following three

circumstances:

1) a signed document from a physician that indicates that you were hospitalized or seriously ill

the day of the exam;

2) documented death of a member of your immediate family (documentation would involve

memorial pamphlet from funeral); or

3) documentation that you are participating in a university-sponsored activity.

• In order to qualify for a make-up exam for any reason, you must notify your instructor before the

exam; an email would suffice.

• Other reasons for missing an exam will be considered on a case by case basis, but you must

make these arrangements with your instructor prior to the absence.

Most students find it easy to conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful and courteous to both

fellow classmates and the instructor. Respectful and courteous behavior is necessary for the

classroom to be a place where learning can occur. It is expected that you will arrive to class on time

and stay until your instructor dismisses you. It is expected that you will take notes during lecture and

answer questions posed by the instructor. It is expected that you will put away cell phones during class

unless they are being used. It is also expected that you will ask questions when you are unclear about

information that has been presented.

Technology can be a useful learning tool, so laptops and tablets are permitted in class for note taking

purposes. However, the instructor reserves the right to prohibit the use of technology if it becomes

unproductive. Remaining focused and on task during lecture is crucial to your success in the class.

Engaging in ANY behavior that is distracting to other students and/or the instructor or that is disruptive

in any way may result in your being referred to the Student Conduct Office (326 Student Union 744-

5470). Such behaviors include unnecessary excessive talking to classmates during lecture, sleeping,

reading newspapers or non-course materials, or other acts that are discourteous or disruptive. Any

DROPPING A COURSE AND WITHDRAWING

FROM THE UNIVERSITY, students often confuse these

terms.

Dropping a Course (or courses) may occur during the first

twelve weeks of the semester. This means, however, that

you are still enrolled in at least one other OSU course.

Exceptions to the deadlines above may only be considered

by petition due to documented extraordinary circumstances

and committee approval. The Retroactive Drop/Withdraw

Petition and the Petition for a Refund of Tuition and Fees

forms are available on the Registrar’s website

Withdrawing from the university means dropping all

courses and you are no longer enrolled for the current

semester. This may occur until the Friday before pre-finals

week. The withdrawal process is initiated with your

ALERTS AND RESCHEDULING

If the OSU campus officially closes due to inclement

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Class attendance is a critical component of learning;

therefore, you are expected to attend and participate fully in

all scheduled class meetings. Many instructors consider

attendance so essential that your grade may be affected by

your absence. SOME DEPARTMENTS AND

PROFESSORS HAVE MANDATORY ATTENDANCE

POLICIES. If no written attendance policy is provided

before the last day to add a class without instructor

permission, no penalty may be assessed for class absences

although you may not be permitted to make up certain in-

class activities. If you are required to participate in official

university-sponsored activities or military training, you

should receive an excused absence unless the written

course attendance policy indicates otherwise. If you will be

absent from class for sponsored activities, you must

provide prior notification of the planned absence to the

instructor. You may be required to submit assignments or

take examinations before the planned absence.

PRE-FINALS WEEK POLICY

Final examinations are scheduled at the end of each

semester and are preceded by pre-finals week, which

begins seven days prior to the first day of finals. During

pre-finals week, all normal class activities will continue;

however, no assignment, test, or examination accounting

for more than 5% of the course grade may be given; and no

activity or field trip may be scheduled that conflicts with

another class. This excludes makeup and laboratory

examinations, out-of-class assignments (or projects) made

prior to pre-finals week and independent study courses. No

student or campus organization may hold meetings,

banquets, receptions, or may sponsor or participate in any

activity, program, or related function that requires student

FINAL EXAM OVERLOAD POLICY

In the event you have three or more final exams scheduled

for a single day, you are entitled to arrange with the

instructor of the highest numbered course (4 digit course

number) or two highest, if you have four finals on one day,

to re-schedule that examination(s) at a time and place of

mutual convenience during final exam week. If the final

exam overload includes a common final exam, the common

final exam is excluded from rescheduling unless multiple

common exams are scheduled at the same time. You should

submit this request in writing, with a copy of your class

schedule, at least two weeks prior to the beginning of final

exam week. The instructor has one week prior to the

beginning of final exam week to arrange a mutually

convenient time and place for administration of the final

exam. After one week, if an agreement cannot be reached,

take the request to the department head.
