From the Secondary Principal

Activities include Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) each day, PSI Young Authors Award contest for poetry and prose, 2nd annual PSI book award, Reading in Mother Tongue, Literacy Afternoon in the Library and a visit from John Farrell, singer/songwriter author and founder of Bridges of Peace and Hope and much, much more. Please look here for more detailed information in the coming weeks as well as the weekly communications on Veracross. PYP Coordinator, Mr. Michael Palmer

I would like to thank the large group of parents who came to this week’s Open House. I know many of them walked away impressed with the hard work our teachers are doing. Here are some upcoming events:1. There are no After school activities on Friday after school and the Saturday Sports program during vacation (Feb

21 and 28)2. When we return it will already be March, which means Literacy Month at PSI. Among the many wonderful activities is a writing contest, the opportunity for you to read to students in your mother tongue, a Literacy afternoon in the library and a visiting author. Check your child’s teacher’s Monday communication for more details.3. I have developed a fun Literacy Month calendar for families to work on at home. A paper will be sent home with children today.4. On March 20th we will have out next Professional Development day. This is one of the two days the Board puts aside during the school year for teachers to develop their profession. In November, Primary teachers participated in a PYP Action workshop. This day we will work on the ideas developed during our Action workshop. Homeroom teachers will also be the Language curriculum and developing ways to integrate maths with other subjects. Single subject teachers will work on assessment and PYP Planner development. Teaching Assistants will work on supporting students to resolve conflicts and improve how they read with students.5. Last, but certainly not least, in honor of Literacy Month, please take photographs of you and your children reading while on vacation. Posters will be placed around school to honor reading!

By Tatiana Lopukhin, Primary Principal

Dear Parents:In this last week before the break, students and teachers have been diligently working on a number of projects. These include:-The Student Council ‘Hrivna Wars’ to raise money for charity. (So far, Kyi House is in the lead, but stay tuned for final announcements after the break!).-Teachers are working across both

Primary and Secondary Divisions to prepare for Literacy Month in March, with a variety of activities to encourage students to read for both enjoyment and academics.-Teachers and Grade 12 students are following up on the Mock Exams and working hard to prepare well for the ‘real deal’ exams in May.-Teachers, students, administrators and parents met this week for the quarterly check in on our Strategic Plan. At the Secondary level, that’s included work on creating new curriculum aligned to changes in the MYP, developing a Student Ambassador Programme to support new students, continuing to refine the House System, and developing standards for non-DP classes in Grades 11 and 12.In short, we’re all looking forward to the holiday week ahead. Please travel safely and enjoy your time with your families. I look forward to seeing everyone again in March – which must mean that spring is on the way!

Regards, Patricia Puia

Dear PSI Community,As we start to plan our orders for the 2015/16 school year we would welcome your suggestions for titles

and resources that you think would enhance our library collections. Please include as much information as possible and check the Destiny Library Catalogue to ensure that our library

doesn’t already hold a copy. Please also remember that these resources will eventually be library materials available to everyone. They will be paid for with the library budget but there is no guarantee that we will be able to purchase all of them due to their availability and our budget. They will be available from the winter of next year.Primary School Library SuggestionsSecondary School Library Suggestions We look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Book Amnesty Dear Students and Parents,We have noticed that there are a lot of books missing from the library that are not properly checked out. This causes a lot of frustration for other users when those books are featured as available on the Destiny library catalogue but are not on the library shelves. For this reason we are offering a book amnesty. If you have any books in your lockers or at home that are overdue or belong to the library but are not attributed to you please bring them back to the library. The books can be recognised as belonging to PSI by a PSI stamp, barcode and/or spine label. All books can be put in the return box at the circulation desk without penalty. Please help us to provide the best possible service we can by following the rules of library use and checking books out properly.Best regards, Pam and Polina

General Announcement- Internet SafetyWe want to give you a general reminder about Internet safety. One important way to protect yourself is not to ‘friend’ anyone whom you don’t know. Because people can create identities for themselves on line, the person you’re ‘friending’ may not be what s/he seems to be. In the most recent case, recruiters for ISIS have attempted to use Facebook and other social media to spread their message and recruit. Dangerous adults, businesses that want to tap into your friend list, and others can be easily avoided by keeping your friend list to your actual friends. Protect yourself on line, please!
