With all the talk of the severe drought

Santa Monica finds itself in,it leaves homeowners wonderinghow they can help out.

The record low rainfallsacross the state has even forcedGov. Jerry Brown and the Santa Monica City Council tourge residents to cut back usage.

Both our state and localgovernments are asking for a 20 percent reduction in waterusage by residents andbusinesses and are hinting atmandatory cuts down the line ifthe situation doesn’t improve.

Instead of waiting on thesidelines, here are some tipsfrom Santa Monica’s Office ofSustainability and theEnvironment that can help youbecome more water-wise.

Tips

• Check toilet for leaks. Repair it orreplace it. This can waste thousands of gallons each month. When choosingnew fixtures and appliances select EPAWaterSense Labeled fixtures that useabout 20 percent less water. This goes for faucets, clothes washers and dishwashers.

• Check faucets for leaks. A simple fix can save gallons upon gallons of water each month.

• Check sprinklers for leaks and runoff.Repair or replace if possible.

• Replace sprinkler heads with watersaving ones.

• Seek rebates for qualified toilets, sprinklers and more.

• Never water your yard between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It’s the law.

• Replace lawns with planting bedsdesigned with native and drought-tolerant plants. Species of sage andlavender offer beautiful color and watersavings. Also, rock gardens are not onlyvisually appealing, but require zero water.

• Pick wisely, go native: Some plants are“thirstier” than others. To achieve the goalof having a beautiful low-water uselandscape, choosing the right kind of plantmaterial is essential: Species identified asturfgrass or as having high water needs inRegion 3 in the current edition of theWater Use Classification of LandscapeSpecies (WUCOLS) are limited to 20 percent of the landscaped area. Many plants native to the area fit the bill.

• To prevent runoff onto the street orsidewalk: Turfgrass is not allowed onslopes steeper than 25 percent wherethe bottom of the slope is adjacent toan impermeable hardscape.
