juLY-AuGuSt 2017 the Sojourner 3

NatioNal presideNt’s message

To all my brother Sojourners, i want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve each of you as president of this great orga-nization. My theme this year is “united we stand” with emphasis on membership, communication and “service to the craft.” The “word” to remember this year is “exposure.” This is a very critical word if we are going to be successful in accomplishing our goals for the year.

Our orientation should be to strengthen our internal organization through education and application and externally to re-establish and strengthen our relationships with appendant bodies. Lest we forget, the core of our order is the “blue lodge.” In many cases, we have lost that “link” and direction. We are “masons” first, sojourners second! Our “bridge of light” program is essential to the future of this order.

Rarely will we ever have a better moment in time to present ourselves in a “positive” and receptive environment than we have now - nationalism is at its highest in America today. We need to seize the moment! Are we ready? We will be! Your headquarters, officers and staff, are ready to support and remember we will always have your “back.”

I will be travelling throughout the country this year visiting chapters in each state. However, if you have been visited by past national presidents, during their year, you will not see me. There may be exceptions, but i plan to visit those chapters that only hear about such visits from other chapters. If any chapter would like a visit, please let headquarters know and it will be arranged, if possible.

Looking forward to working with all of you this year, i remainAn American patriot,

Ron SortinoNational President

There is no age limit on being a Patriot, after the closing of the meeting of Fort Stew-art #396, A mother of a young man came to me and said her son heard me giving the toast to the flag and wanted to talk with me. I bent down to listen, and he said Sir Thank you for your Service. I was shocked that this young man was so patriotic he had on his combat gear, vest back, pack, boots, map case and helmet. I bent down and he asked me if I wore a helmet in the Army. I said yes then he told me all about his outfit, said his bed roll and rations were in his back pack. It was all I could do to hold back tears. Here is a 5 year old that was more respectable and patriotic then the other adults in the resturant. I took off my Flag Pin and pinned it to his Flack jacket. When I requested

permission to use this picture for this article His mother told me he is ex-tremely proud of the pin and shows it to everyone. This young Man is 5 Year old Chase Palmer.

KnicKeRbocKeR – west point #13, LTC Jack H. Moore, Secretary, 145 Lincolndale Acres, Washingtonville, NY 10992. On 11 June we met at the West Point Masonic Lodge in Highland Falls, NY for our bi-monthly meeting. Pres. The ROTC Award supports the purposes of developing true patriotism and Americanism throughout the nation and furthering the military needs of national defense. The Na-val Science instructors select the recipient. Cadet Baberan has been an active member in the NJROTC unit for all three years of his high school career. He quickly advanced through the ranks and was accelerated promoted to Ensign and assigned the posi-tion of Platoon Chief in his sophomore year. Joseph attended the Leadership Academy program this past summer, which groomed him to assume positions of increased responsibility within NJROTC. He was recently promoted to Lieutenant and as-signed as Company Executive Officer in his junior year and is responsible for the moral, discipline and military training of the entire company. In addition to his staff responsibili-ties Joseph is an active member of the unit’s drill teams, color guard, and community service activities. He accumulated over 100 hours of community service this past year. In addition to his service to the unit and community, Joseph has distinguished himself as an exceptional student achieving one of the highest grades in the NJROTC program and making the school Honor Roll. CDR Ted Ward, the senior Naval Sci-ence instructor, reports that it is a distinct pleasure to have a cadet of his intelligence, enthusiasm, character and initiative in this program. His actions and example reflect great credit upon himself, the NJROTC Unit, New London High School, and are keeping with the finest traditions of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

PASADENA #265, LTC Joe Ryland, Secretary, 904 W Huntington Drive, Apt6, Arcadia, CA 91007. The members of our chapter, together with Heroes of John Pershing Camp, were proud and honored to have received the Pasadena Mayor’s Award for civic participation. This award is based on individual participation in various civic activities. It seems that the average age of our members is between 45 and 50. We hope our chapter activities will serve to further motivate our members in their patriotic endeavors. Membership in the chapter continues to increase, as does attendance at the chapter meetings. We

have an experienced membership chair-man, Simon McIlroy, and he is emphasizing the recruitment of qualified Masons, we are also looking for youth. The problem is that there are not as many young Masons in the Pasadena area who have served on active duty. However, this will not deter us from seeking new qualified members.

OLD DOMINION #364, MAJ Les Al-bers, Secretary. 8297 Lindside Way, Springfield, VA 22153. On May 17th, we hosted the Chief, History and Legacy, of the Vietnam War Commemoration Com-mittee. Bro. Mark Franklin, and he provided a power point lesson on the history and mission of the Committee. Bro. Jackson demonstrated the primary mission of the Committee by presenting Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pins to six Sojourners who served in the Armed Forces from 1955 to 1975. Among the recipients were US Army veter-ans: Pres. and NSec Bros William Sanner, Jack Whisler (two tours in Vietnam), and Les Albers; US Air Force: Johnny Mayers (served at Bien Hoa Air Base); US Navy: Pat Curtis and Ed Arndt (participated in Operation Passage to Freedom in 1955). The Committee’s presentation featuring a video recognizing a veteran’s honorable yet overlooked service generated many emotional reactions. We approved the mo-tion to become a Commemorative Partner and will plan a second Vietnam Veterans recognition event this year.

BRAZOS VALLEY #378, Col Henry C. Hill, Secretary, PO Box 10356, College Station, TX 77842. On 4 May 2017 we were

opened by Pres. Hank Salzmann, with ap-propriate ceremony and prayer. Bro. Travis Normand, a former JAG Officer, 36 Infantry Division, and Associate in Moon, Scully and Normand, PLLC, presented an explanation of “The Law of Armed Conflict” and related it to actions in the world today, as well as incidents in the past. An understanding of Armed Conflict is foundationally necessary to assess actions of the United States and its military in the midst of today’s world-wide turmoil. As distinguished from other aspects of War, Armed Conflict is a very specific condition of conflict, like others, defined through international treaties and national laws. Each specify what constitutes Armed Conflict, how participants should conduct their actions and enjoy protections and assurances afforded combatants and non-combatant populations.

Sponsored by Roy Smith, Bro. Joshua Flye was welcomed and initiated. Bro. Henry Hill presented the Sojourner Medal. Bro. Flye is a Commercial Airline pilot. Ellen Fuller representing Flags Across America, explained the efforts of supporters to strengthen and expand programs honoring veterans. We made a donation to support the placement of Wreaths and Flags. A slate of officers for the following year were confirmed and installation set for the June 1, 2017 meeting. Sul Ross Camp, Heroes of ’76 indicated support for the new slate of officers.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY #543, CW3 Thomas D. Anderson, 476 Ron’s Drive, Augusta, WV, 26704. Memorial Day in Middletown, VA was celebrated at the new War Memorial at the south end of town.

Approximately 150 people turned out for a lovely program which was organized by Bro. Ray Steele a member of our chapter. Bro. Steele was the mover and shaker behind the building of this beautiful monument to those who gave their lives to protect our country and those who still are out there giving their all to keep our country safe and secure. He worked hard on all aspects of designing and building this tribute to our service men and women. He not only did the paperwork part, but he spent many, many hours working in the hot sun of summer 2016 with pick and shovel to help raise this memorial. He was the Chairman for this year’s Memorial Service, and gra-ciously welcomed everyone. Following the invocation by Rev. Clay Knick the flag was lowered in proper form and the “Toast to the Flag” was given by Bro. Charlie Davis, Cdr, and the flag was raised again in proper form. The national anthem was then sung by Mrs. Beverly Mathis which was followed

by remarks by Mr. Robert Andrews, who is the President of the Col James Wood the second Chapter of the VA Society of the SAR. Middletown Mayor Mr. Charles Harbaugh, IV, laid the memorial wreath followed by an Honor Guard three volley salute by the Honor Guard of VFW Post 2123. Mayor Harbaugh thanked Bro. Steele for all the hard work and time spent to raise the memorial. “TAPS” was sounded, and the Benediction was given by Rev. Knick. It was a moving end to a moving tribute to the men and women who kept, and are still keeping, our country free, for us and for future generations.

NatioNal CommaNder’s messageAs your National Commander I will be making numer-

ous trips this year. I will not only be attending Confer-ences and Encampments but also visiting Camps that have not been visited in recent years and Camps that need help. My focus this year is on being your National Commander and I am stepping back from my involve-ment in my other Masonic bodies. My theme for the year is “Enlighten your Camp”. Utilize the new Official Manual

Heroes of ‘76 to run successful Bivouacs and Encampments. The manual also contains the forms your Adjutant completes and sends to National Headquarters who will forward them to me for my review. The Muster, Visit, and Annual report forms are also found on the Website in the Members Only Section at the Heroes of ’76 Tab. I will use the informa-tion you report to try and help your Camp. Learn the Land Marks in the manual. The 11th Directive states, “It is a landmark that only 1 Recruit at a bivouac and a maximum of 2 at an Encampment.” Normally a Sojourner will have to be in good standing with the Chapter displaying exemplary service and loyal support of the National Sojourners at least 1 year before being selected to become a Hero. If you need clarification on anything in the new Heroes Manual send me an e-mail, or call. All of the old contents in the blue 3 ring binder and destroyed. The new Heroes Manual should be used at all times. On my travels I will have some manuals for purchase. It is only $6.00. All the Heroes Camps that wish for me to visit please send me an e-mail containing time and place. I already have 9 visits in my calendar. In closing I admonish every Hero to learn the “Toast to the Flag” and be ready to give it whenever the opportunity may arise. I have an open door policy. Don’t hesitate to contact me.

our camp met for annual elections. Cdr Maurer asked to step down citing numerous personal commitments. He was thanked by all present for his tireless efforts on behalf of our camp over the past years. It was unani-mously agreed that Bro. Ronald Buchholz would serve as our new Cdr and Bro. Robert Seaman was unanimously elected as our CoS. Serving as our ACos will be Bro. Tom Lavinski. Howard Whitman will remain as our OoD and Jack Moore will continue as Adj. Absent from our meeting was “Army” Harry, aka, Harry McFarland, who informed fellow Heroes prior to elections that he would serve in any position if needed. All Heroes present, unanimously voted him as having permanent “KP” duty, and rec-ommending his nickname be changed to “Spuds.” There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

HuGH MERCER CAMP (Northern New Jersey #42). We joined with Camp Valley Forge at the German Club in Warminster, PA, to hold an encampment on September 29th. During a routine patrol, two dishev-eled and scraggly looking individuals were apprehended and could not adequately identity themselves. After confinement, it was determined that they were Bros. David Barlieb and John Habel who were somewhat fuzzy as to what organization they belonged. After further interrogation,

they were proved to be Masonic brothers, Sojourner members, and were duly initiated into our camp. With their enthusiasm, they will make splendid additions to the Camp.

NATHANAEL GREEN CAMP (Tinker #43). On 30 April, our Flag Team was hon-ored to present the “Building of the flag” program and the Toast to the Flag for the Shawnee Masonic Lodge’s annual Student and Teacher of the Day awards ceremony. The team consisted of Bros. Arlan Smith, Jim Selders, Jeff Fluker, Paul Neihoff and Dan Burchett. Bro. A. C. Henager rendered the Toast to the Flag.

On Flag Day, 14 June 2017, our Flag team was honored to present the Building of the Flag Program for the MOWW Col. Pendleton Wood Chapter 73 and several occupants of the Epworth Village Retire-ment Center in NW Oklahoma City. The team was delighted to visit with Shirley Cloud, the widow of our National Sojourner deceased Bro. Ralph L. Cloud. Bro. Robert Carr gave the Toast To The Flag. The team consist of Bros., James Selders, Henry Riebel, John King and Dan Burchett.

On 15 June 2017 we were enjoying an evening break in the rigors of the day when such a commotion erupted at the gate to the camp. A ragged, battle weary person was striving to get into the camp and was caught by the guards at the gate. The indi-vidual was escorted to the Cdr who placed him in the holding cell until his identify an purpose could be investigated. After much interrogation by the Cdr, and the attending Heroes, it was determined that he was a Bro. Sojourner and desired to join us. After exhibiting the necessary qualifications Bro. Msgt Arlan E. Smith was welcomed.

On 21 June 2017, the officers for 2017-18 were installed. The newly installed officers

MORDECAI GIST CAMP (Ft. Jackson #184). Not surprising, the “Massing of Colors” is always a very special event and a beautiful sight to behold … this one was no exception. Here in the Midlands of South Carolina, the sponsor and host of the event is the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbia. The project manager, Ill. John Marcucci, 33º G.C., also a dedicated Sojourner, and his Camp Follower, Lady Martha, pulled togeth-er a great event. We enjoyed the pleasure of many organizations participating – Law Enforcement, JROTC, ROTC, Fire and EMT Responders, Masonic Orders, and Ameri-canism/Patriotic orders. This year was a little lean, but nineteen (19) units is a good showing, when you consider each had at least two flags. The program was very nice with theme-appropriate songs, entertain-ment by a combo from the Ft. Jackson band, and included a distinguished Speaker, Maj. Gen. John P. “Pete” Johnson, the Com-manding General of Fort Jackson. Our members were conspicuously present in several capacities, including a Color Guard of three flags. Indeed, our Pres. recited the American’s Creed for all to reflect upon. The event concluded with light refreshments. A truly great event.

The threat of rain gave way to sunny skies. The Troops and Camp Followers assembled in the western counties of the

Upstate in the Colony of South Carolina. No rapscallions were seen, but many patriots assembled and a contingent under the leadership of Bro. Richard Barton made way with Colors. It was a great day for the Heroes and in the ranks were Camp Followers Cindi Barton-Philadelphia Light Horse banner, who supported the visiting Capt. Abraham Markoe, and Patti Turner-Gadsden Flag, carried for Gen. Christopher Gadsden. Representatives were also seen from Gen. Daniel Morgan. Following the muster ceremonies and reflections on the dear lost to the ranks [today called POW/MIA], victuals were enjoyed by all.

JOHN J. PERSHING CAMP (Pasadena #265). Our new Cdr, Bro. Joven Bilog, has put the camp on notice that he is planning a full schedule of bivouacs this year. If we cannot find a suitable recruit in Pasadena Chapter, Joven plans to coordinate with commanders of other camps so our camp can help them initiate their recruits. The three camps in the Regional- West part of SOCAL Area have a close working relation-ship. Our departing Cdr, Bro. Bernie Harris, had a strict disciplinary style of leadership. He really cracked the whip with those poor recruits. Whereas our new commander has a devious, diabolical style where he displays a benevolent, kind attitude, but he plots the complete destruction of the will of those unsuspecting recruits. Yes, our Hero Camp will have a lot of activity this year. We invite all Heroes to join us. There will always be an ample supply of donuts and coffee at our bivouacs. Old Fort Hood is an ideal place for bivouacs and encampments.

Lawson was presented with a plaque in rec-ognition of the work she had done for their Toys for Tots program by the Winchester Marine Corps League of the United States Marine Corps.

Thanks to her hard work on behalf of the Marine Corps, along with many other donations, the Corps was able to present five toys and a stocking to 1,893 children who might not have gotten anything for Christmas. Thank you Lady Wanda Lawson for all you do for the Heroes of ’76 and for needy children in our area.

On 2 May 2017 five of our members found themselves in very familiar territory as once again they presented the “Build-ing the Flag” program to a large group of nearly 100 senior citizens. Once again we had been asked to do the program for the monthly seniors get-together at the First Baptist Church in Front Royal, Virginia. This time there were more new faces in the group looking forward to our program and the lovely dinner afterwards. Once ev-eryone was settled in, we were introduced by the MC, Dee Strokes and the program commenced. Bro. Charlie Davis narrated while Bro. Richard Radi and Ladies Wanda Lawson and Irene Mertens built the flag. When the flag was completed Bro. Charlie did the Salute and Bro. Thomas Anderson did “Taps” on the bugle. Everyone gave our group a wonderful ovation and Ladies Wanda and Irene passed out flag pins and a copy of the poem “A Salute to the Flag” to everyone in the audience.

Charlie Davis, Cdr; Richard Radi, CoS, Pres.; and Camp Followers Ladies Wanda Lawson and Irene Mertens presented the program. Bro. Davis narrated the history while Bro. Radi and Ladies Lawson and Mertens built the flag. Bro. Davis then gave the “Toast to the Flag” and Bro. Radi played “Taps.” Ladies Wanda and Irene passed out double-flag pins and a copy of the Toast to all present. There were approximately 50 Ladies and One Gentleman who was also giving a presentation that day. The ladies were very appreciative of our efforts and enjoyed the program. Many voiced an interest in having us present to other groups they belong to.

NatioNal ChaplaiN’s momeNtA Piece of Patchwork Peace, PleaseHawaiians say, “Aloha.” Hebrews say, “Sha-

lom.” We Americans talk about “Peace,” but how often do we achieve it or find it? If you pull out your Webster’s, you will find the “cessation of war” or the “absence of war.” All we have to do is look around us and we realize that is not a fact. Terrorism is happening in faraway places. Terrorism is now in our own backyard. There is no peace out there.

I would be very tempted to say there is at least one act of violence every day in Augusta, Georgia, my home. If you attend a local church or house of worship on a regular basis you will see some very heated discussions that very well might boil over. We see cliques and sub-groups in our local lodges, that are “us” against “them.” Peace is absent.

I volunteer with Juvenile Justice making recommendations to the presiding judges as to how well a given child or group of siblings is faring in the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) system. Georgia’s default in all DFCS cases is to return the child to the biological parent(s). The concept is that permanency will bring “peace” to the child(ren). With my panel this is the exception and not the rule. Parents would much rather not work, not have a roof over their heads, not pay their bills, or they want to live in a bottle or syringe. The children are in foster care, or a group home, or institutionalized. None of them are particularly at peace.

I spent most of my mobilization post 9/11, 9 years, laboring in the world of suicide and suicide prevention. Working in mobilizations and demobilizations, suicide was the present-ing “cause” but we quickly learned that PTSD was not far removed from the situation. In the last couple of years Moral Trauma has come onto the scene. A medic who administers too much morphine to a terminal patient, to hasten their death and “peace.” A drone pilot who fires his “hell-fire” missiles to then see a child come running out of the house filled with insurgents. Actions that totally go against our morals, we are filled with feelings of guilt and have no lasting peace.

The world strives for peace. Jews have been fighting for peace for millennia. Jesus of-fered his disciples peace with Him in His Father’s abode. One of my favorite hymns is “It is Well with my Soul.” “When peace like a river attendeth my soul...” That may very well be the answer to all our quests for peace, it is internal and eternal.

At the ANC in Austin a request was made to “codify” our position of how we pray. As members of the Blue Lodge, we attend lodge prayer. In the appendant bodies we assume an attitude of prayer; whether we put our right hand over our heart, our arms crossed over our chest with our right over our heart, our hands clasped in front of us. It was seemingly left to the National Chaplain, me, to make a recommendation back to C-33 as to our solemnity of prayer.

I cannot help but to think of Jesus’ parable of “the Pharisee and the Publican.” The Pharisee comes in standing tall and reminding God just how good and marvelous he really is. I picture the publican cowering in the corner, laying prostrate, humbly asking God for mercy, as he is a miserable sinner. Jesus says the publican went home justified.

May peace be in our hearts and souls as we reach our attitude of prayer in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. How intimately do you know Him and how much He loves you.

Peace and Shalom to all my Brothers and Sisters.

It’s a local boy done good kind of thing. I don’t think he set out to do something like that, but it just caught on. World War I was called “the war to end war” by the time America entered the conflict 100 years ago. The First World War, 1914-1918, didn’t fulfill that predic-tion, but it did provide two symbols of American service and sacrifice that endure to this day -- the Blue and Gold Star service flags.

The Blue Star signifies that a family member is serving in the military during wartime. The Gold Star indicates that a family member has been lost to war. Multiple stars provide the number per household. The Blue Star banner was first, and was designed and patented in 1917 by businessman and veteran Robert L. Queisser, of East Cleveland, who had two sons serving overseas during World War I.

Queisser was a captain in the Ohio National Guard, and served on the Mexican Border in 1916-1917, according to Jon Silvis, 57, of Rocky River. Silvis waged a seven-year campaign to get Queisser inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, succeeding in 2012, after he found a Blue Star service flag that his grandparents had displayed for his father -- a naval aviator who served during World War II, the Korean War and early years of the war in Vietnam.

Curious, he starting looking into the history of the Blue Star flag. “It was one of those things that the more I dug into it, it was like, ‘Well, that’s neat, I wonder what else I can find out,’” he said. “It’s a fascinating story,” he added. “It’s a local boy done good, kind of thing. I don’t think he set out to do something like that, but it just caught on.” Silvis said Queisser, owner of Queisser Pressed Brick in Cleveland, created the design to keep himself busy after being injured in a car accident, and as a way to distract his wife from worrying about their sons. The web site crwflags.com notes: “No less than six different designs were proposed and/or manufactured by other people from Cleveland. The concept spread fast and some 40 or more designs for Service Flags were submitted to the US Patent Office before the end of the War.” Queisser’s design was the first to receive a patent, and the idea caught on with the public.

On Sept. 24, 1917, an Ohio congressman read into the Congressional Record: “The mayor of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the governor of Ohio has adopted this service flag. The world should know of those who give so much for liberty. The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother are their children.” Queisser’s idea was even the subject of a song during World War I, “There’s a Little Blue Star in the Window (and It Means All the World to Me).”

The chorus of that song went: There are stars in the high heavens shining/ With a promise of hope in their light;/ There are stars in the field of Old Glory,/ The emblem of honor and Right. / But no star ever shone with more brightness, I know,/ Than the one for my boy o’er the sea./ There’s a little blue star in the window,/ And it means all the world to me.

According to Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., the Gold Star was created in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson approved a suggestion made by the Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defenses that mothers who lost a child in the war could wear a gold star on the traditional black mourning armband.

That led to placing a Gold Star inside the Blue Star, indicating that the service member had died, and their blue star had turned to gold. The stars were particularly popular during World War II, and most were handmade. During that time, the Department of War is-sued specifications on manufacture of the flag, as well as guidelines indicating when the service flag could be flown and by whom. The Blue Star service banner is an 8.5-by-14-inch white field with one or more blue stars sewn on a red banner. Sizes vary, but should be in proportion to the U.S. flag. The stars also led to creation of two nonprofit service organizations -- Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., founded in 1928 and organized by a woman who lost a son during World War I. The last Sunday in September has been honored as Gold Star Mothers Day.

The sons of the man who helped start this tradition came home safely after the war, and Robert Queisser retired from the National Guard with the rank of colonel. After his death in 1939, Queisser was buried at Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights. Gone, but not forgotten. As Silvis noted, Queisser’s concept “was an outgrowth of the First World War that still affects us today.”
