Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 My Year 12 class have just finished completing their trial examinations; getting a real taste of what the HSC exam will be like. The students have received feedback and will be looking further into the analysis of each question once they finish the course. They have just begun the last topic “Critical Path Analysis”. This is new content and has not been previously taught, so we are all on a new learning curve. Critical path analysis is a useful tool in project planning, management and logistics. It is a technique that identifies the activities required to complete a project or task, including identifying the time necessary to complete each activity and the relationships between the activities. Critical path analysis helps to predict if a project will finish on time. Below is a sample HSC question provided from NESA. See if you can offer a solution.

The network diagram represents a system of roads connecting a shopping centre to the on-ramp of a freeway. Traffic moves via several routes. For example, there are two routes from the shopping centre to P and one route from T to U. The number on the edge of each road indicates the number of vehicles that can travel on it per hour.

a) At present, the capacity of the network from the shopping centre to the on-ramp is not maximised. Which additional road(s) would increase the network capacity to its maximum? A. A road from P to U with a capacity of 20 vehicles per hour. B. A road from Q to T with a capacity of 20 vehicles per hour. C. A road from R to T with a capacity of 20 vehicles per hour and a road from T to U with a capacity of 40 vehicles per hour. D. A road from Q to U with a capacity of 20 vehicles per hour and a road from S to U with a capacity of 20 vehicles per hour. b) It is not possible to construct a road directly between the shopping centre and the on-ramp. Suggest ONE way that the network capacity can be maximised with additional road(s). Justify your answer.

SCIENCE

Year 11 Mathematics Advanced This is a new syllabus and students have been busy completing the Trigonometry unit of work. They have just received the notification for their Preliminary examinations in Week 6 this term, and Trigonometry will be examined. With the new HSC in 2020, there will be common questions in the exams for each of the Mathematics courses. Below is a HSC sample Trigonometry question supplied from NESA, which is common to both the Standard 2 and Advanced courses. See if you can remember the rules to do this.

The diagram shows three towns , and . Town is due east of Town . The

bearing of Town from Town is N39°E and the bearing of Town from Town

is S51°E. The distance between Town and Town is 1330 km. A plane flies between the three towns.

a. Mark the given information on the diagram and explain why is 90°.

b. Find the distance between Town and Town to the nearest kilometre.

c. If the speed of the plane is 570 km/h, how long does the flight take from Town to Town , in hours and minutes?

d. The plane is going to fly from Town to Town , stopping at Town on the way. Leaving Town

, the pilot incorrectly sets the bearing of Town to S50°E. The pilot flies for 1650 km before

realising the mistake, then changes course and flies directly to Town without going to Town

Which is closer to Town : Town or the point where the pilot changes course? Justify your answer.

Year 8, 9 and 10 Mathematics Year 10 have just been given their Common Assessment Task for this term. Students have been given a budget to cover floors on a house plan. They need to investigate the different flooring available and complete an Excel spreadsheet with all calculations on area of floors, the cost of each room and the total cost. The extension for this task is to include an outdoor area which is not rectangular. Let’s hope they can keep in budget. Year 9 will be issued their task this week as well. Students will be busy measuring heights and analysing the data using an Excel spreadsheet. 9MATW have worked on using statistics with Excel last term in readiness for this task. 8MATA have been busy working on Pythagoras’ Theorem and finding the missing sides of right-angled triangles. Their Common Assessment Task involves working with right-triangles and angle properties that lie on parallel lines. They will be issued this task this week as well. A Hood Mathematics Year 12 Year 12 are going to be running some fundraising activities aiming to keep costs down for the end of the year activities such as Mystery Day and the Year 12 Formal. One of these fundraising initiatives is a raffle with the prize being a brand new GoPro Hero, valued at $299, which has been kindly donated by Mr Wilson from the HSIE faculty. Tickets will be sold for $2 each or 3 for $5, and can be purchased from Mr Walton and Mrs Sammut as well as some Year 12 students. We are fast approaching the middle of Term 3 – the year is flying by! Your children will shortly be in the process of preparing for their first Semester 2 Assessment Tasks. There will be some scaffolding given in class but your child is expected to complete the majority of work at home. The After School Tutorial Centre on Tuesdays and Wednesdays is also a good place to get extra help. On another note, please make sure you child comes to class with the proper equipment. This includes a calculator, pen, pencil, eraser, ruler and, in some instances, a geometry set. It is often very difficult for the required work to be completed without the appropriate equipment. We wish all students the best in their Assessment Tasks and hope their results accurately reflect their ability and effort!

Melodic Sounds of Strumming ... I walked out onto the oval today and was immediately taken by the sounds of guitars. It was a delightful soothing sound that immediately brought a calming effect over those in the surrounding area. A small crowd of students were sitting around listening to two of their peers playing their guitars. It was a wonderful sight to behold. {{ Marshall W and Charlie F, two Year 9 Elective Music students, have been so inspired by their time in Music, as well as their mutual interest and hobby, have gone out and purchased their own acoustic guitars. Marshall's interest is for popular ballad types of songs, while Charlie is currently teaching himself the Jon Bon Jovi classic: Dead or Alive. Guitar playing, according to these aspiring musos, produce cool sounds, and is a great stress relief after you get your head and fingers around the hitting the right strings. Charlie has been playing his own guitar for around six months, after seeing Marshall enjoying his own guitar, purchased around 18 months ago. Marshall's Uncle Daniel has been a role model to him. "Uncle Daniel owns heaps of guitars and even makes guitars as well." Student response to their music playing has been positive, "Hey, play us a song" is often said to the boys. They love hearing their sound around the school. Let's hope the boys continue to inspire each other, and the wider student population and achieve their goals of studying music into the HSC years and beyond. Hopefully Marshall will achieve that dream of owning his own guitar store and be teaching other students

Year 12 Students Create Kanahooka High School History Makalah W and Jannali E have created history at Kanahooka High School. Under the guidance of their teacher, Miss Page, the students have completed their practical examination as Kanahooka High's first HSC Dance students. Last Monday the girls completed their practical examination for the HSC Examiners who attended the school specifically to mark the students' work. Both girls had to complete a Core Dance Routine as the compulsory section of the examination. Following this, Makalah and Jannali had a choice of additional components. Composition was an elective they chose, and this required them to create a dance sequence individually and then work with junior students by teaching them the routine. The smile on the girls' faces at the end of the day, which went until 5.30pm was a delight to see. They had to master time management of their own schedules, as well as the schedules of the junior students, as well as overcome the life stresses that get imposed upon them as young teenagers. They did it! Now they are focusing on the written examination which they have to look forward to in October ad November.

Profile on Public Speaking Name: JOEL G Age: 13 Class: 7K Former Public School: Hayes Park Favourite Subject: All subjects are my favourite! Hobbies: Techno Wiz – Turning old tech programs into new ones Favourite Author: David Walliams – I love how funny his books are and they always have a twist. (A boy is trying to kiss a girl for the first time and as he leans in for his big moment she screams, “Yewwww, we aren’t that far into our relationship as yet, and not in public while we are eating chips!”) Why Public Speaking: Very interesting to learn about persuasive techniques. Good practice for job interview. A good skill to have in your life. How long have you been entering public speaking competitions? My first competition was back in Kindergarten. My skills weren’t as good then as they are now. Favourite Public Speaking Moment: 2018 when I won the Dapto Learning Communities Public Speaking Competition at Lakelands Public School. The topic was: That the Creative Arts are a Necessity in Life. I actually argued against the topic by saying whilst Creative Arts aren’t a necessity in life, they are a necessity for humanity. For example, animals such as birds, when selecting a place to nest, don’t consider a location with a beautiful beach view. They do what is practical, not what is beautiful. However, it is an instinct of human beings to be creative. Humans select locations with a view, they instinctively become creative when decorating their homes. Best Public Speaking Moment of 2019: I got to participate in the Year 9/10 Debating Team. The opportunity arose when someone was away. It was a last minute call up, and I only got to fill in the one time, but it was enjoyable. I got to learn how the older students structure and develop their speeches in a very different way to how we junior students structure a speech for English. As the 4th Member of the team my role was as Team Adviser, where I assisted my team mates in writing their speeches and contributed ideas on the spot to refute the arguments of our opposition. Future Public Speaking Goals: I want to improve my skills. There’s no point in continuing with my public speaking, and winning, if I don’t improve my skills along the way. Single Sign-in is coming - August 19!

What does that mean? Basically what it sounds like. Students will have to login as usual to their school computers (student.name@detnsw) and then that will be it. The idea is to free up time for students to learn and staff to teach.

Printing

As I spend lots of time on the internet, I occasionally come across competitions that I enter just in the hope that I can win something, although it usually ends up with more spam emails. So imagine my surprise when I entered another competition, not really expecting any kind of result, but three months down the track I received an email from FedEx about a package being delivered soon. I looked over the consignment note and noticed Polar3D in the company name. I checked through my emails from the last month and realised they had sent an email stating our school has won a 3D printer and curriculum/lessons etc. from GE/Polar3D. I’ve had a look at the review and I’m quite excited to get right into working with them. It looks like an upgrade from our previous Flash Forge printers. I hope to be working in conjunction with the Science and TAS Faculties over the next year to really get some students interested in STEM subjects. For anyone that’s interested the printer is a “Dremel Digilab 3D45” and there are some great reviews on YouTube. It even comes with a built in webcam so we can do time-lapse recordings of prints being built (and remotely monitor builds). https://digilab.dremel.com/products/3d45

If you’ve designed something on a CAD program and want it printed let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Our printer has arrived and should be operational shortly.
