Born in Eisleben, Germany

Graduated from the University of Erfurt Planned to study law

Frightened by a bolt of lightning

Decided to become a monk.

Joined the strict Augustinian order. Despaired of ever earning salvation.

Was ordained as a priest.

Took a position teaching at the University ofWittenberg.

Began to seriously study the Bible.

Learned that the just shall live by faith.

Johann Tetzel

Appointed by Albert of Brandenburg to travelthroughout Germany and sell indulgences.

Half would go to Albert and half to Pope Leo X for theconstruction of St. Peters Cathedral.

The indulgences would free people from all

punishment of sins. As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from

purgatory springs.

Martin Luther

October 31, 1517 nailed his Ninety-five Thesesto the church door in Wittenberg.

Challenged the way that the indulgences hadbeen used.

Only later did his disagreements about purgatory andthe extent of papal power come to light.
