prospectus 2012-13 new1 - welcome to vivek high...
TRANSCRIPT
Vivek High is a school, where education implies more than just the
imparting of knowledge. It is about growing up and finding the experiences
that will develop strength of character, dignity, decency and a passion for
life.
The education of the "whole" student has been a key feature and strength of
Vivek High School, since inception in 1984. We remain committed to an
education that focuses on individual development where every student is
encouraged to grow intellectually, physically, spiritually, socially and
emotionally.
In offering a vast range of activities there is a fundamental belief at Vivek
High that every student can and deserves to experience the kind of success
that promotes self-esteem, purpose in life and the confidence to tackle new challenges. Whether it be
through music, drama, sports, service or adventure activities, it is the endeavour of the school to help find
and support each student's involvement in worthwhile and personally important endeavours.
The essence of Vivek High's philosophy is embedded in its name "VIVEK" and the school's motto
"KNOWLEDGE and INTEGRITY". Vivek is a Sanskrit word that means the ability to discriminate between
right and wrong, and having the Knowledge to use this ability judiciously and with Integrity.

The word 'Vivek' means the power of discernment.
Vivek High was established in 1984 by Late Sardar Bhagwant Singh whose
commitment to education was the belief that a child must be given a broad
based and well balanced development : not only academically, but also
emotionally, morally, physically and spiritually.
Knowledge and Integrity
Knowledge to discern, knowledge to grow and learn,
knowledge to change with the times, and, at the same time,
retain the high moral fibre instilled through this philosophy.

Vivek nurtures an atmosphere that encourages the practice of honesty, openness, truth, integrity and
freedom of expression. These qualities are central to our approach to discipline, discussion,
relationships and individual care. Behind the scenes of everyday life at Vivek, there is a remarkable
transformation at work. This is the subtle and powerful process in which young lives are shaped and
moulded through experiential education. ‘This means giving the child an opportunity to flower in
goodness so that he or she is rightly related to people, things and ideas, to the whole of life’- (Krishnamurti on
Education). We can never guarantee success of the process but we strive to create the conditions and
the atmosphere in which our mission becomes possible.
The school emphasises on the wholesome development of young lives through a sense of social
responsibility, compassion, generosity, a global outlook, an inquiring analytical mind and
confidence in their ability to make a positive contribution to the society and the world at large. The
main aim of inculcating these values is to create a community of 21st century learners.

Vivek has no formal links to
any religion or religious
group. Children of all faiths
are welcome. We have always
tried to foster a secular and
tolerant approach to life.
At the heart of Vivek's
commitment to spiritual
development is the belief that
true spirituality is measured in
the quality of our daily lives:
in thought, word and deed; in
our relationship with others; in
our willingness to serve and in
the power of what we practice
rather than preach.

…spiritual development is the belief that true
spirituality is measured in the quality of our
daily lives….
Meditation is Vivek's distinctive morning assembly. It consists of a
shared silence, a short message talk, a group prayer, followed by a
period of silent reflection. Both in the silences and the words, this
popular routine allows the students and staff of a busy school, the
time for contemplation and spiritual reflection.
Eminent
personalities give
frequent talks and
discouses on
spiritual enrichment
and moral values.
Vivek High is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; yet the school is proud to
have evolved a unique dynamic education programme which is based on the holistic pattern rather than a
Board centric plan, which historically sees most of its graduates each year enter national and international
colleges and institutions. Our teacher student ratio is 1:16. This ensures that each student is given
individual attention and is nurtured. The number of students in each class is limited to 28. Each student's
strengths are thus recognized and he/she is allowed to blossom in the area of his/her interest.
A continuing programme of staff professional development ensures that Vivek's academic curriculum
offers diversity and innovation in its content, while promoting the best teaching practices based on Critical
Thinking Methodology in collaboration with the Critical Thinking Consortium, Canada.
From Nursery (age 3) to Class 3 (age 8), the formative years of development and growth, careful planning
and consideration ensures a love for learning and an interest in school activities. Each student is
encouraged to develop academically and socially through play way, phonics, discovery and thematic study.
Special care is taken to inculcate discipline and good study habits. Students become lifelong learners when
learning is fun and meaningful. At Vivek, the classroom goes beyond the four walls and consequently
students are prepared not only to "read the book" and "see the movie", but to put on their boots and get
outside to experience it. The teachers are encouraged to move their classes to the outdoors whenever
possible. At Vivek, our academics are evolving to meet the needs of today's learners and focussing on the
21st century by using a multifaceted approach. Through the recognition of multiple intelligences and using
a layered curriculum, we provide the opportunity for students to direct their own learning within a
framework crafted to enhance their
emotional and mental growth. The
Preparatory curriculum is specially
designed to lead seamlessly to the
Senior School Programme.

Prominent among our goals, for both the Preparatory and
the Senior school programme, is the meeting of student’s
needs to find relevance in academics which we achieve
via a hands-on, experiential method, innovative
curriculum and teacher—supported self directed learning.
These integrated programmes are characterized by a blend
of various course materials and a removal of boundaries
between subjects through Synergistic Collaboration.
Vivek is proud of its highly qualified and
dedicated staff and its structured and ever
evolving teaching environment.

Physical Education, a term used at Vivek to cover a wealth of activities, is an integral part of
school life. The sports programme is devised to stretch and satisfy both the top team player
and the willing enthusiast with as wide a range of experience and choice as possible. All the
main team games like basket ball, cricket, soccer, volleyball, handball etc. are played, along
with a multitude of other options available from karate, aerobics, kickboxing and yoga.
All students of the Senior School regularly participate in outdoor excursions and
expeditions. While competence is achieved in mountaineering, rock climbing and trekking,
boys and girls develop interpersonal skills in unaccustomed circumstances. They also
benefit from learning in controlled conditions – wherein safety is always regarded as being
of paramount importance.
The school has a creditable record of successes in matches and competitions at school level
and national events. Vivek is proud to have several local, national and international players
of repute among its alumni.

stream. It is a programme that was introduced in 1996 at Vivek to give hands on experience to students on
running a company. The company programme was granted licence and recognition by Junior

Vivek looks beyond academics. Simply put, it, means
that we believe that true education transcends the
limits of textbook curriculum. Education is that
which empowers young adults with discerning
powers . A well devised and planned holistic
programme of education is what Vivek High
endeavours to provide its students. It is here that
talents are discovered and honed to perfection,
technical and manual skills are imparted and
nurtured, abilities and interests are given strength
and purpose for children to make correct and happy
choices in life. Vivek is proud to give its students
choices of skill, of performing arts, service for the
under privileged, love for pets and plants, awareness
of environment, art, craft, outdoor education and a
range of other socially useful and productive
activities to suit and cater to a variety of aptitudes

Looking beyond self to serve are
important aspects of the Vivek
experience. All students are
sensitized to the need of the
under privileged and the
deprived sections of society,
while at school.
Students actively work on fund-
raising, collecting clothes,
books, newspapers shoes and
toys for underprivileged
children and for People for
Animals Organisation. Vivek is
proud to have built a school
shelter for poor children in Chandigarh. Interactions with
inmates of the Old Age home and the senior citizens instill
students with sensitivity and concern for the elderly. Exchanges
with children living in abject poverty and deprivation, gives
students insights into a world that we all know exists, but very
few care about.
Younger students do their bit by brightening up the lives of
their ailing counterparts by painting and sprucing up walls and
corners of the Paediatric ward at local Hospitals.
Students of Vivek High rise up to the occasion whenever and
wherever a need arises, by contributing generously in cash and
kind, through community service in India and abroad.
Vivek's students preserve the environment by recycling
wastepaper. The school has its own paper recycling unit. File
Covers and invites are made of recycled paper, by the students
at school. The school is declared a No-Plastic Zone by the
students themselves. Planting of saplings and care of plants is a
part of our effort to keep our Earth green, healthy and happy. A
more recent development is the initiative to support SAHAYTA
- a leading organisation that provides medical aid to young
victims of cancer. The Square One Club also raises funds for the
underprivileged sections of society.

In its constant endeavour to fulfil its responsibility as an educational
institution, Vivek has tried to ensure a place for children who are
different, and have different needs. These children deserve to be
loved, nurtured and above all accepted by all.
Towards this cause, Vivek has a centre 'Jagriti' that caters to the
academic and social needs of children with special needs (e.g.
Autistic, intellectually deprived & down syndrome). The focus is to
create an atmosphere that is happy and stress free, where children
learn with confidence and joy and get to enjoy a childhood that they
truly deserve.
The objective is on improving social, cognitive, language, self-help,
pre-academic and academic skills, as well as increasing the
concentration and attention span of these students.
A partial inclusion approach that has been adopted whereby
children are encouraged and helped to spend as much time as
possible in the regular classroom. An Individual Education
Programme is prepared keeping in mind the social and academic
needs of each student.
At Vivek a cohesive thread is woven in collaboration with all the
dimensions in the scholastic & co-scholastic areas. This
helps nurture the global citizen ready for the 21st century
and creating a community of caring individuals.
