JUST over a year ago CJMbecame, we believe, the first saleroom inthe country to ditch the traditional antiquesauction and operate all sales – including themost prestigious fine art auctions – exclus-ively online.The decision attracted a lot of discussion in theantiques world, both locally and further afield.Reactions ranged from the people who thought itwas a bold move into the future (not many ofthose) through to the folk who thought we wereplain crazy and would end up flat on our pro-verbials.The decision was taken in the light of what wasactually happening in our auctions. They weretraditional sales, with people bidding in theroom, which were also webcast live, facilitatinginternet bidding.When we analysed the results, we discovered thatthe number of people registering to bid onlinewas several times as large as the entire audiencein the room and that, in terms of value, theonline bidders were the most important. Themajority of the high value lots were being boughtonline.The analysis did also provide confirmation ofsomething we thought was happening – that in-creasing numbers of local people were preferringto bid online when they could quite easily havecome along and bid in the room had they wishedto do so.The first time that trend registered with me waswhen a successfulinternet bidder turned up to collect the Chinesecarpet that he had bought just 30 minutes earlier.He lived in Broughton, just three or four milesaway from auction centre.

When we asked him why he had bid online ratherthan come along to the auction he explained thatit was just less hassle.So all this was the background to our decision togo exclusively online. Naturally there were con-cerns. While we were pretty sure thatantiques enthusiasts and collectors would even-tually come to like the new approach there wasalways the danger that, in the short-term, therecould be a lack of enthusiasm for sales. If we hadmoved too soon then we really could have ended

up with egg on our faces.As it happens we did not need to be worried.Results have gone from strength to strength. Fur-thermore, a year after North Lincolnshire led theway, auction rooms around the country, includingsome of the famous London salerooms, are nowstaging exclusively online auctions.One of the most important things that the onlineauction has done is to expose the antiques andcollectables being sold by local vendors to buyersaround the world. Over the past year we have

sold a Grimsby-made violin to a musicalinstrument specialist in Italy, bottles of vintagebrandy have been sold to France, opal jewelleryto Australia, and silver to Argentina, to give but afew examples.We use the BidSpotter platform that we believe isthe best system on offer at the present time. Thespecial feature is that if a bid is made in the lastten minutes before the deadline then the sale ofthat item is delayed for ten minutes, and if thereis another bid in those ten minutes then there isanother ten minute extension. It means that theresult is not down to being last on the button.In theory the sale of a lot could go on for hoursand there have been occasions when it has. Therecord time occurred during a commercial auctionwhen the bidding for a children’s soft play areawent on for more than five-and-a-half hours, withthe price going up from £7,000 to £16,500. Thelongest time we have recorded in an antiques salewas three-and-a-half hours during which the bid-ding for a vintage Rolex went from £2,000 to£4,500. The system is good for vendors and fair tobidders.The next major antiques and collectables sale atthe auction centre is to take place on TuesdayApril 1st. Entries are still being accepted eitherthrough the weekly antiques valuation clinics atthe Angel Suite in Brigg on Thursday morningsand the auction centre on Dunlop Way in Scun-thorpe on Friday mornings or at other times byappointment. A following sale will see impressivecollections of clocks and Chinese ceramics goingunder the hammer. There is sure to be a lot ofinterest from collectors in those fields, so thisprovides an excellent opportunity for anyonelooking to sell these types of antiques.
