JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 8/7/2013

Christian Wallumrod Ensemble Outstairs

3733062 602537330621 CD ECM £9.49 JAZZ

With five previous ECM albums as leader, keyboard player Christian Wallumrød’s compositional signature is instantly recognizable. Nobody else writes pieces like this - multi-dimensional chamber music inspired by the sonorities of Norwegian folk and church music, influenced by early music and the post-Cage avant-garde, and liberated by jazz’s freedom of thought. This time around, his ensemble members share the arranging credits between them, making the music still more organic and flexible as new sound combinations emerge. “The immense sonic resources of these players seem to keep on growing” noted The Guardian of their last release, Fabula Suite Lugano, and the sextet of Christian Wallumrød continues to evolve in its own idiosyncratic way on Outstairs. Like Fabula Suite Lugano, this album was produced by Manfed Eicher and recorded at the Auditorio RSI in Lugano, Switzerland. The studio’s naturally clear acoustic sound also contributes to the musical outcome: in Wallumrød’s music, often built of small gestures rather than dramatic flourishes, acute listening is of paramount importance. There are some changes in the line-up: Espen Reinertsen comes in on tenor saxophone, and Tove Törngren is the band’s new cellist. Reinertsen and CWE trumpeter Eivind Lønning have much experience together playing free improvised music. Their shared feeling for timbre, texture and extended instrumental technique is well-utilized by Wallumrød - as is the resourcefulness of Swedish cellist Tove Törngren, who works regularly in contexts from chamber music to pop to improvisation. Gjermund Larsen, who joined the ensemble in time for the first sextet recording The Zoo Is Far, has a sound informed by a profound knowledge of Norwegian folk music. The yearning tone of his Hardanger fiddle has become one of the characteristic sounds of the group. Wallumrød and Per Oddvar Johansen have been collaborating for more than 20 years, and the drummer has a highly-developed sense for shading and detailing the inner architecture of Wallumrød’s compositions. Personnel: Christian Wallumrød (piano, harmonium, toy piano), Eivind Lønning (trumpet), Gjermund Larsen (violin, hardanger fiddle, viola), Espen Reinertsen (tenor saxophone), Tove Törngren (cello), Per Oddvar Johansen (drums, vibraphone) Tracks: 1. Stille Rock 2. Bunadsbangla 3. Tridili #2 4. Very Slow 5. Startic 6. Beatknit 7. Folkskiss 8. Third Try 9. Ornament 10. Outstairs 11. Exp Promotion includes advertising in Jazzwise. JAZZ/FUNK NEW RELEASE - 15/7/2013

George Duke DreamWeaver

HUI3417002 888072341708 CD HEADS UP £8.49 JAZZ/FUNK George Duke describes this as his “strongest album in years”. The brilliant keyboardist-composer-producer has gathered a myriad of voices and crystallises them into a multi-faceted whole that far outweighs the sum of its parts. From bassist Christian McBride’s work on the funky jam tune “Burnt Sausage” to Rachelle Ferrell’s contemporary jazz singing on “Missing You”, every song offers something special. The powerful centerpiece of the album, the positive and politically charged “Change the World”, spotlights several up-and-coming young singers alongside some of the most prominent funk, soul, gospel and R&B artists of the last few decades: Lalah Hathaway (daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway), Jeffrey Osborne, BeBe Winans, Lori Perry (of sister group Perri), Freddie Jackson and Terry Dexter, among others. A special bonus cut, “Ball & Chain”, features a duet with Duke accompanying the late R&B singer Teena Maria one of the last tracks she recorded before her sudden death in 2010. Tracks: 1. DreamWeaver 2. Stones of Orion 3. Trippin' 4. AshTray 5. Missing You 6. Transition 1 7. Change The World 8. Jazzmatazz 9. Round the way girl 10. Transition 2 11. Brown Sneakers 12. You Never Know 13. WORLD NEW RELEASE - 15/7/2013

Jyotsna Srikanth Call of Bangalore

TUGCD1072 605633007220 CD RIVERBOAT £6.70 WORLD Explore the beauty of Jyotsna Srikanth’s South Indian violin on this sensitively crafted collection of Carnatic music. Adept at playing in many styles, Jyotsna's elastic approach imbues her classical playing with a fresh energy that summons listeners to discover the elegant musical traditions of her home; this is her ‘Call of Bangalore’. Carnatic music from the south of India is renowned for its naturally melodic form. Jyotsna Srikanth’s music is woven through with this aesthetic; her artful violin soars in gayaki style (as if sung), punctuated by percussionists Patri Satish Kumar and N. Amruth on mridangam (double-sided drum) and khanjira (clay pot) respectively. Jyotsna hails from Bangalore, the capital of the state of Karnataka. Her music, like her home city, is full of eclecticism and revelling in the collision of old and new. On this album Jyotsna concentrates on a collection of Carnatic classical music showcasing works by some of its greatest composers. Yet via a host of other projects, Jyotsna is equally as likely to be found jamming with her fiddle in free jazz, folk fusion or even rock forms. This elasticity imbues her classical Carnatic playing with a fresh energy that summons listeners to discover the opulent musical history of her home. Tracks: 1. Varnam 2. Gopalaka Pahimam 3. Annapoorne 4. Brovabarama 5. Shobane 6. SOUL/FUNK NEW RELEASE - 8/7/2013

Various Artists

Beach Diggin' - Hand-picked by Mambo & Guts

HS090CD 3700409812422 CD HEAVENLY SWEETNESS £9.49 SOUL/FUNK The perfect soundtrack to chill on the beach complied by Guts - a French producer exiled in Ibiza, and Mambo - a cult Los Angeles-based painter. 16 tracks of obscure but wonderful, bossa nova, soul, jazz, latin, disco, afro-funk and tropical - souvenirs of travels through North and Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean islands. Guts and Mambo have little time for the idea that Brazilians have to play bossa nova, Cubans salsa and a Jamaican has to be into reggae. They sniff around the blind spots away from the beaches packed with noisy tourists and come up with a Pilipino who make northern soul, West Indians who lay down earth-shaking dub beats, and Trinidadians who unleash funk laced with lots of brass. Not to mention Peruvians, Frenchies and Spaniards who can recreate the atmosphere of a humid, sixties Rio party. Beach Diggin’ is for sipping through a straw, wiggling your hips and shaking your pelvis to... Tracks: 1. Talya Ferro - Cuando Caliente El Sol 2. Anna Mazzotti - Agora Ou Nunca Mais 3. SOUNDTRACK NEW RELEASE - 15/7/2013

Various Artists Russian Film Music III

BAM2048 5705604020489 CD+DVD BEL AIR £7.99 SOUNDTRACK Bel Air’s discs of Russian Film Music have been among the label’s bestsellers - no surprise given the instantly memorable themes by Soviet composers heard on these CDs. Now comes the equally captivating Russian Film Music III, featuring film scores from 1932-2004, but with one unique difference: in addition to the CD there is a DVD of film clips putting the music by Tariverdiev, Shostakovich, Schwartz, Petrov, Sviradov, Artemiev and others into its intended context. The long-awaited Russian Film Music III brings together 26 tracks of music, mostly from the 1970s and 1980s. Exceptions include Shostakovich’s scores for the films Oncoming (1932), Michurin (1948) and Near as Life (1966) and the most recent piece, Anatoly Kroll’s ‘Anxious’ from 2004’s The Cavalier Announced Dead. Though very popular in Russia, many of the scores are little known internationally. However some have gained cult status around the world, among them the music created by Edward Artemiev for Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpieces Solaris and Stalker. The Soviet period saw a vast production of mainly propaganda films, but in between there were films released without political overtones, some on historical themes. The soundtracks, for which some scores no longer exist, were usually recorded by unnamed studio ensembles and the sound quality (though not the performances) was not always the best. However, since most of this music is not well known beyond Russia, producer Ole Jorgensen made this a secondary consideration, putting the emphasis instead on the hugely enjoyable selection of music and the track sequence. The absorbing DVD contains 24 movie clips from the majority of the films for which the music on the CD was originally composed. As there is more than one extract from some of the films, the 87-minute DVD features them in a different order referring to the track order on the CD at the start of each excerpt. The original music soundtracks are enhanced in these extracts, and the Russian dialogue is translated for English subtitles. DVD specifications: PAL, 4:3, resolution 720 x 480, stereo 48 kHz, 85 mins Tracks: 1. Alexander Zhurbin: "Overture" from "The Moscow Saga" (1984) 2. La Serenissima & Adrian Chandler

Vivaldi: A Tale of Two Seasons - Concertos & Arias

AV2287 822252228724 CD AVIE £8.49 CLASSICAL Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima, with virtuoso soloist mezzo-soprano Sally Bruce-Payne, continue their enlightening exploration of the music of Vivaldi focusing on two contrasting eras of the composer’s Venetian operatic career. Vivaldi specialists Adrian Chandler’s and La Serenissima’s hallmark qualities of erudition combined with crowd-pleasing performances have made them one of the best-selling and acclaimed period-instrument bands performing today. Recently their Gramophone Award-winning album Vivaldi: The French Connection (AV2178) topped a Forbes list of How to Build a Top Quality Classical Music Library. Their last release, Venice by Night (AV2257) made the Top Ten of the UK Specialist Classical Chart. Their 11th release for Avie, Vivaldi: A Tale of Two Seasons once again presents the Red Priest in an engaging and fascinating light. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 15/7/2013

Yukiko Kojima Akira Miyoshi: Piano Works

ODRCD306 855317003066 CD ODRADEK RECORDS £8.49 CLASSICAL Japanese pianist Yukiko Kojima brings together in a rare disc the major piano works of her compatriot Akira Miyoshi (born 1933). Drawing on Eastern traditions, physiological breath itself seems to dictate the rhythm of musical gestures and phrases. The emotions expressed vary continuously, as if the piano itself had its own language and told a story: one of fragile beauty and fleeting changes of delicate colours. Akira Miyoshi was born in Tokyo, studied French literature at Tokyo University and spent a highly formative period in the 1950s studying composition in Paris. His connection with French music and literature is apparent in both his musical language and the titles of his works, and he has been particularly influenced by the music of Henri Dutilleux. His succession of award-winning works covers all the main genres of vocal and instrumental music, and if piano music is a relatively modest part of his wide-ranging output, the instrument has nevertheless been an important part of his creative life. In addition to these solo works he has written a piano concerto and a piano method, composed pedagogical works and founded a piano competition. Yukiko Kojima received her Bachelor of Music in solo performance from McGill University in Montreal where she was a student of Prof. Kyoko Hashimoto. In 2007, she won 2nd prize (no 1st prize given) in the Masters Piano Competition in Tokyo, which led to her becoming a member of the All Nippon Players’ Association. She performs extensively in Japan, with a special dedication to the works of 20th and 21st century composers, always to the acclaim of press and public alike. Her major repertoire includes John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Nikolai Kapustin, Toru Takemitsu, Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Samuel Barber, Henri Dutilleux, Chick Corea and Akira Miyoshi. This is her debut disc. The new Odradek Records is a democratic classical cooperative, non-profit and artist-controlled label and concert association, promoting new artists and fresh repertoire. It has released five previous recordings, all by pianists: Domenico Codispoti, Duo Miho and Masumi Hio, Pina Napolitano, Javier Negrín, and Mei Yi Foo - whose ‘Musical Toys’ disc resulted in her being named ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the BBC Music Magazine Awards. Personnel: Yukiko Kojima (piano) Tracks: Sonate pour Piano (1958) 1. I. Allegro 2. II. Andante 3. III. Presto Chaînes - Préludes pour Piano (1973) 4. Ière Partie 5. IIème Partie 6. IIIème Partie 7. Leopold Stokowski

The Magical Conductor - His Greatest Recordings 1945-1960

600090 4053796000903 CD10 DOCUMENTS £6.99 CLASSICAL The legendary conductor Stokowski was one of the major influences on the American concert scene in the 20th century. He was however a musician who divided opinion to the extent that some called him a genius whilst others considered him to be nothing short of a charlatan. The collection presented in this 10CD box includes music from the late romantic period (Liszt and Wagner) right through to giants of the 20th century like Shostakovich and Stravinsky. It covers the latter part of Stokowski’s career and shows that he had lost none of his freshness and musical temperament even in his seventh decade. Born in London to a Polish father and Scottish mother, and educated in Berlin, Munich, Paris and London, Leopold Stokowski became not only a famous conductor but also the first maestro of the baton to become a genuine media star. He became particularly well-known for his acoustic experiments, which included different placements of orchestral musicians, and arrangements of classical works, especially those of J.S. Bach. His unconditional support for contemporary composers and the quality of the recordings that he left to posterity have confirmed Stokowski as one of the most eminent interpreters of his century. Personnel: Leopold Stokowski (conductor), RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski Symphony Orchestra and others

In addition to this the collection also includes piano concertos and solo works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Bach, Rachmaninov, and Cesar Franck.
