Project update for traffic improvements on Old South Head

Road

Roads and Maritime Services invited feedback in June and July 2018 on a proposal for traffic improvements on Old South Head Road between Syd Enfield Drive, Bondi Junction and Curlewis Street, Bondi.

Based on the feedback received and the results of additional investigations in April 2019, Roads and Maritime have decided to proceed with the new and extended clearways on Old South Head Road and improvements to the Flood Street intersection.

We have collated the community feedback and provided responses to the key matters raised in a community engagement report. This is available on the project website at rms.nsw.gov.au/clearways.

Our proposal included:

• Extending the existing weekday clearways and introducing new weekend clearways on Old South

Head Road between Syd Einfeld Drive, Bondi Junction and Curlewis Street, Bondi

• Converting the existing westbound ‘Left Turn Only – Buses Excepted’ lane into Flood Street into a

‘through and left turn lane’ for all vehicles.

New and extended clearways

New clearways will be operational in both directions of Old South Head Road between Syd Enfield Drive,

Bondi Junction and Curlewis Street, Bondi on:

• Weekdays from 6am to 7pm

• Weekends and public holidays from 9am to 6pm.

There will be no changes to existing parking restrictions on Old South Head Road outside the new clearway

hours.

Flood Street intersection improvements

Flood Street intersection will be upgraded by converting the existing westbound ‘left turn only – buses

excepted’ lane into Flood Street into a ‘through and left lane’ for all vehicles. When combined with the

parking removal from new and extended clearways, this will allow road users to use both citybound lanes

on Old South Head Road to travel through the intersection. This should improve the efficiency of the

intersection, reduce queuing and improve travel time and reliability for all road users, including buses.

New alternative business parking

Roads and Maritime will continue to work with Waverley Council to fund and implement additional short term business customer parking in nearby side streets, including three timed spaces on Flood Lane and three timed spaces on Flood Street, subject to Council approval.

What happens next?

We will be progressing with work to implement these changes on and around Old South Head Road in the coming months.

We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses and notify before work begins and the clearways become operational.
