PID 99467
ODOT, the Ohio Rail Development Commission, and Ametek Inc. propose to eliminate theexisting at-grade railroad crossing on US33, east of the intersection with Cemetery Road. Theproject is necessary to eliminate a safety hazard on US 33.
Ametek currently receives, on average, three main line rail deliveries per week. During eachdelivery, traffic on US 33 may be blocked four times or more for 5 to 10 minutes each time, asrail cars are switched to/from the train. In addition, Ametek makes, on average, three internalrail movements per week that require crossing US 33. The proposed projects will eliminate thesecrossing blockages of US 33 and the associated safety hazard. The project will have a secondarybenefit of reducing the use of the train horn to only that necessary at the Cemetery Roadcrossing. Currently, each crossing of US 33 requires the use of the train horn.
Under this project, approximately 1000 feet of new rail spur will be constructed parallel to US33, on the north side. This new rail spur will provide the necessary tail track length for themovement of up to 15 rail cars during rail pick-up/delivery from Ametek, Inc. After the new railspur is constructed, the existing segment of rail line within ODOT’s right-of-way will beremoved. The new spur will be used only during rail pickup/delivery and will not be used tostore rail cars.
The project corridor is located in an area of mixed land-use, including a cemetery, industrialdevelopment, and agricultural lands. Acquisition of approximately 0.34-acre of will be neededfrom the south line of St. Joseph Cemetery. No other right-of-way acquisition will be required.
Within the project area, there are no National Historic Landmarks, sites listed or known eligiblefor the National Register of Historic Places, or sites for which Ohio Archaeological Inventoryforms have been completed. An Ohio Historic Inventory form has been completed for St. JosephCemetery (OHI AUG0052903), established in 1896. A Cultural Resources Survey wascompleted for the region in 1998, for the extension of US 33.
There are no wetlands or waterways within the proposed construction limits. Excluding smallscrub trees, no trees will be removed under this project. The project is not located within adesignated special flood hazard area.
The project will be constructed with federal System Preservation funds, Ohio Rail Developmentfunds, private funds, and ODOT state forces. Environmental clearance is scheduled for01/04/2016. The anticipated award date is June 2017.
