My Thumbnail drawings

My first 4 thumbnail sketches were done very loose and with lessdetail, but it didn’t have the feeling of a city.

In these sketches you can clearly see that Istarted going abstract and not focus on being

too defined with my mark making. Especially if

you looked at 75. It looks like a scene from a

Movie and that was my aim was. I start looking

at perspectives and they are visible in these

and in my previous thumbnails.

My Thumbnail drawings

It is a good using Photoshop for quick thumbnails but when it comes

to being more detailed, it is better to do it on your sketchbooks.

My Thumbnail sketch for Baucis

Done some rough pencil

sketches of Baucis. I thought

of Baucis as a city that likes its

silence and that the people

might be very spiritual. Thisincludes a temple with a gods

statues.

Out of all the Baucis

thumbnails, I believe that65,71,72,75,3 and 4 seem like

places in the city or even

outside of it and they also go

well with the description of

this city.

I made these quick sketches partially to see how

certain areas might turn out as before I focus on large

thumbnail sketches, colour, perspective and angle.

Mission Statement

Reading over the long description about each of the cities, you would expect someone

to get a lot of ideas and inspiration but I didn’t find anything exciting that attracted my

attention. However, while reading the short passage about Baucis; I immediatelythought “Baucis is a city up in the clouds and hidden deep in the woods, you wouldn't

even know of its existence unless you look closely up in the sky .” To my understanding I

believe that the inhabitants would like their existence be unknown to the world and live

a private life.

The way I visualize the city is very unique and surreal, the narrative for this city is

about how the traveler goes through ‘dark woods’ which indicate different directionsand overcomes obstacles in order to arrive at this paradise that provides peace and

harmony. He’ll arrive but yet will not find it until he looks up and sees the ladders

placed over the cliffs that ‘ll lead him there. As he arrives he won’t believe his eyes andwalks through the city and be mesmerized about how everything seems ordinary. The

people who don’t touch usually come down to earth will still see everything by sitting in

a tent that takes you down to observe the little wonders. A waterfall so beautiful you

would be willing to say here forever and a temple with people so involved withspirituality and meditation. A normal city with the inhabitants living an ordinary joyfullife and respect any of their visitors and warmly welcome them to their home. My target

audience would be based everyone from the age of 5 and onwards and anyone who likes

to dream of a perfect city.

Visual Concept Map – Interior

My main influences are things you don’t

really see in everyday life. I did someresearch and found out about children

who climb up the ladders on cliffs to goto school and thought that this is

something that strongly links in with my

idea and the concept of a hidden city.

Houses with stilts are commonly found in

Thailand and they exactly describe howthe city might look from a closer view. The temples that can be seen from

different angles which also includes the

temple in Peru built in the late 15th

century.

In the description we are told about how

the inhabitants rarely come down toearth because of the respect they have

for it.

So I wanted to find something that shows

the people still visiting earth but without

touching the ground, the idea I had was a

type of tent that hangs from the clouds

and over earth. Another feature I was

interested in was to show, how there are

similarities between the two places and

that everything we see below is also

available above the clouds.

Visual Concept – MoviesI chose the movies Brave, Epic and

Dragon Age primarily because of the

texture used in the concept art. I

like to see how they were precise

with their mark marking but not

overdo it at the same time.
