Invisible Cities
Invisible Cities was written for the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra for a concert in the Duke’s Hall in September 2012, conducted by Christopher Austin. The title is taken from a book of the same title written by Italo Calvino. The book consists of a fantasised meeting between Marco Polo and Kublai Kahn where the former describes cities that he has visited on his travels. However, it soon becomes clear that he is actually describing the many facades of Venice, the names of the cities being pure fiction.
Duration: 7‐8 minutes
Note
The Congo Nuts are around fifty halved nut shells tied to a central wooden post. If not available, shells arranged in a similar fashion may be used. The Congo Nuts should be suspended by a grip holding them vertically to avoid any noise caused by lifting them up or putting them down.
The trombones are called on to use water balloon mutes from letter L. These are simply balloons filled with water (fastened) that are held in the bell. The air pressure should make the balloon comically flap around. It is advised that regular balloons, rather than water balloons intended for water fights, are used because they are stronger and should not burst.
