Integration updates
16 May 2013
Alignment strategy – two solution under study: Support target/horn/reflector (THR) from the top – allow
active alignment feedback as motors are away from the hot area (preferred)
THR placed on the bottom of the trench – easier but difficult to imagine active feedback
S. Girod
4 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Integration updates
Guidelines: Avoid penetration of He-vessel in inaccessible places (bottom
of trench) Striplines, water, electrical signal with a dedicated lateral
flange on top of the Fe shielding Target/horn coupled and common alignment to be foreseen
16 May 2013
With S. Girod we started to tackle these items in priority as the most critical aspect at this stage
Evaluate the number of penetrations through the vessel needed
5 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Integration updates
If support/alignment is based on lateral Fe blocks mandatory to maintain constant temperature
TAX-like cooling with independent cooling circuit ~50 kW to dissipate
Precise machining of surfaces for good thermal contact will be mandatory 16 May 2013
6 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Target/horn integration
Target engineering and integration inside the horn must be a high priority
We should cross-check the clearances we are presently considering for between target external body and horn inner conductor CC fibre (baseline) + Be (backup solution)
Action EN/STI – EN/MEF to be started
16 May 2013
12 mm target Ø – 6 mm clearance
7 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Radioprotection guidelines and priorities
Shielding thicknesses assessment for target/DP is well defined
16 May 2013
Priorities: Clarification of
concrete top shielding (to minimize it)
Shielding/configuration for the primary/SB interface
Air activation studies to address air recycling and flush (input for CV)
8 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Radioprotection guidelines and priorities
Double-walled pipes for primary circuits Use of dry air for ventilation system –
installation of air dehumidifier to reduce corrosion For the ventilation area 2 (service pits)
Prepare for decommissioning and dismantling already now
Release of 3H in the He seems to be ok – foresee evaporator already in the design and part of the installation
Lowest pressure in the area with highest radiological risks

Horn/Reflector converters/transformer
Under investigation to reuse part of the CNGS powering equipment for horn and reflector Part of these have been already recuperated from WANF or
WANF-design! Discussion on-going to check what could be recuperated or
not New capacitor bank in storage PC design depends on the inductance and geometry of
horn/reflector and strip line lengths Action with TE/EPC and EN/MEF
16 May 2013
~14x10 m2 needed for power converter and capacitor banks (surface)
Transformer could be in the service rooms with ~10 m of striplines
10 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Target building crane
Cranes foreseen for b. 755: Main 40 ton crane for shielding and THR movement (lifting
height is 20 m) Auxiliary 5 ton hoist (18.4 m lifting height)
Under discussion the movement and lifting height News this afternoon possible to 26.1 m still maintaining full
vertical movement (but bigger external size)
16 May 2013
K. KershawTotal distance from the bottom of the crane until the bottom of the service rooms is 22.5 m
11 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
C&V update Recently started iteration studies with EN/CV (M.
Battistin –PJ): Important input for integration studies
Under discussion the cooling system for horn/reflector: How to control the level in the reservoir located below the
focusing system – risk of breaking the inner conductor 70 kW evacuation in the DP with forced air
convection seems to be feasible Location of secondary circuit in the service room ok HS cooling & ventilation station for pit1 could be
located on top of the building (more studies needed)
16 May 2013
12 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
C&V update
Primary loop either in the BA81 extension or in a dedicated technical building (reuse cooling towers b. 893)
Possibility to foresee a double-walled HX to avoid potential contamination of the primary loop to BA81
16 May 2013
BA81 extension
755
13 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
C&V update
Detailed information now needed for EN/CV to make a more refinement evaluation of costs/space/requirements
Water circuits: Power to dissipate, water quality, DT, pressure,
redundancy, etc. Air/ventilation:
Power to dissipate (thermal charge), temperature, humidity, recirculation, flush, Dp control, redundancy
16 May 2013
Topics will be treated in the SB WG (~bi-weekly)
14 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Geomembrane – water retention
Contacts with SIKA Suisse established
Technical material/datasheets available
Proposed solution is feasible more detailed studies
in the tendering phase, especially for the drain/sumps
16 May 2013
15 M. Calviani - CENF PTM
Conclusions
Integration and technical design aspects of the SB line are on-going
The WG will tackle the most urgent items and move forward with a TDR in mind
