I International Legionella Fast Detection Congress - Thursday 26th November 2015

W E L C O M E L E T T E R0 1

Welcome to the First International Legionella Fast Detection Congress 2015 on Legionella rapid testing and water safety.

Although for the foreseeable future there will always be a place for culture, well-known drawbacks of this gold standard are driving the incorporation of methods obtaining a faster result than the reference method. These fast methods can be used as standalone or supplementary to the gold standard. Alternative methods are gaining acceptance for the commissioning of risk facilities or when something has gone wrong, but also in point

of use to supplement laboratory testing, outbreak/public health investigations and for routine testing.

In this scenario, an understanding of the rapid assay will help you to interpret data. Do you understand what the test is telling you? Choosing a suitable test requires to answer a number of issues: validation? Peer-reviewed evidence? Sensitivity/specificity compared to reference method, Units? Will end user understand them? Suitable for your laboratory or need? Cost?

Customers will have questions to ask to their testing laboratories: what does the test mean? What does the test measure? Manufacturer and lab validation? Is the test certified? does it meet regulatory testing requirements?

Immuno-magnetic approaches can bring benefits such as same day results, viable only detection, good specificity, useful for complex matrices, can match sensitivity of culture method or even can be used up-front before culture/PCR to increase sensitivity.

The end user must be able to interpret results correctly in order to take appropriate action and the laboratories should take an active role in ensuring the customer understands new tests, including limitations and what the results actually mean. The developers should overcome the difficult to explain scientific principles to non-scientists, helping to the building of customer confidence in rapid techniques.

This first Congress is focusing on practical cases and real world best practice on water safety using rapid testing. Thanks to all our expert speakers who will be sharing success stories and tips to help you tackle the strategic and day-to-day challenges of prevention, risk assessment and treatment on the basis of a rapid testing. Speakers from Spain, Australia, Germany, UK and USA will be joining to us for a one-day comprehensive event.

It is going to be a wonderful day of case studies, vital information, practical insight and networking. Thank you for attending and making today possible. I very much hope you enjoy the International Legionella Fast Detection Congress 2015!

Best regards,

Santiago V. LuisDpt. of Inorganic and Organic ChemistrySupramolecular and Sustainable Chemistry GroupUniversity Jaume I

Dr. Inma Solís is Head of Microbiology Department at Iproma, S.L. for the last 20 years, a recognized ISO 17025 Laboratory devoted to environmental analysis. Dr. Solís is member of the Spanish Society for Microbiology, really also as member of the governing body of this scientific society founded in 1946 at the Jaime Ferrán Institute, which belongs to the National Research Council (CSIC). She actively works in three Specialist Groups of this Society: Water Microbiology, Food Microbiology, and Normalization of Methods. Dr. Solís is also member of the technical advisory committee of ENAC (National Accreditation Entity in Spain). She has a wide experience validating alternative methods.

Dr. Vyt Garnys, Managing Director and Principal Consultant of CETEC, is a recognised leader in understanding Legionella ecology and measures for its monitoring and control in drinking water systems and cooling towers. In 1987, Dr Garnys conducted Australia’s first general industrial workshop on Legionella. In 2000, he investigated the Legionella outbreak at Melbourne Aquarium and subsequently was an active participant in the development of the Victorian risk management guidelines for cooling towers. In 2013, Dr Garnys and the CETEC team were contracted by The Wesley Hospital to provide a solution to recurring Legionella in their potable water system. He also assisted Queensland Health in the development of new Guidelines for Managing Microbial Water Quality in Healthcare Facilities, released late 2013. Dr Garnys co-authored four papers and also presented at the 2013 International Legionella Conference. In the last year he has written articles (Hospital Engineer), broadly consul-ted and presented at seminars on the management of microbial water quality in healthcare facilities

Dr. Santiago Luis Lafuente is professor at University Jaume I, Director of the Development Research group on Supramolecular and Sustainable Chemistry, and Coordinator of Inter-university Programmes on Sustainable Chemistry, Dr Santiago Luis Lafuente is regarded as one recognized expert on developing fluorescent probes for specific molecules sensing and polymeric chemistry. He investigated the controlled radical polymerization of monomeric units containing chiral ionic liquids (CILs) allowing the synthesis of intrinsically chiral polymers through a bottom-up design. He also investigated the fluorescence response of receptors selective to anions based on new pseudopeptidic molecules containing an acridine unit, and he developed turn-on

fluorescent probes for nitric oxide sensing based on the ortho-hydroxyamino structure showing no interference with dehydroascorbic acid.

Mario Hrsak, is Director of Vessel - Sanitation Program at CARNIVAL Cruise Lines. He has recently collaborated with Center for Disease Control and Prevention at Atlanta (CDC) for the evaluation of a New Environmental Sampling Protocol for Detection of Human Norovirus on Inanimate Surfaces. With the amount and variety of water on a cruise ship, including pools and drinking water, Carnival are always looking for new versatile testing systems able to provide quick results, including rapid Legionella testing. The fact that it could be portable allows Carnival technicians the opportunity to test water at various locations and receive instant and accurate results.
