Dear Friends,
Welcome to Annapolis and the Key School’s 17th Annual Annapolis Book Festival. This is always an amazing event for our community, and we appreciate that people come from near and far to hear the authors, ask questions, and of course pick out a few titles for future reading from the new and used book sales section.
One of the great things about this Festival is that it is free and offers so much. Where else but in a city like Annapolis can you hear first-hand from nationally known authors like Deborah and James Fallows, DeRay Mckesson, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, and Evan Thomas? This event is truly a book lover’s dream.
I am particularly moved this year to see Maria Hiaasen on the list of speakers. Her husband, Rob Hiaasen, was tragically killed in the Capital-Gazette shooting last year and Maria got her husband’s book posthumously published. Float Plan is a quintessential Rob story. “When life throws you overboard, learn to float.”
Cheers,
Gavin Buckley, MayorCity of Annapolis
Welcome to the Annapolis Book Festival!
Now in its seventeenth year, the Annapolis Book Festival reaches well beyond Maryland’s Capital. Throughout the day C-SPAN will be televising author sessions, providing individuals across the United States and the world with theopportunity to engage with many of the distinguished authors and moderators who are in attendance. While this event is considered a cornerstone of the wonderful programs available in our area, we are excited that the Festival experience extends beyond our campus.
In addition to over 30 author panels, there are interactive children’s activities, live musical performances, food, and new and used book sales. While our Town Crier will be making announcements throughout the day about the events taking place all over our beautiful campus, feel free to ask any of our volunteers for directions or to address any questions you may have.
The Annapolis Book Festival would not be possible without the commitment of the Key School Parents’ Association. We are so fortunate to have such a committed group of volunteers who spend countless hours over the course of the year planning and organizing the day’s activities. Their support is essential and the Annapolis Book Festival would not take place without their help. On behalf of The Key School, and all of our visitors to campus, I want to thank all of our volunteers and this year’s Co-Chairs of the Festival, Michelle LaRose and Allison Porter.
The efforts of the Annapolis Book Festival leadership and volunteers is bolstered by our Festival Sponsors. We truly value the support of over 100 local and regional organizations that help make this event possible. This year, we wish to thank our Title Sponsor T-Rex Solutions, and our Pulitzer Sponsors: Base2 Engineering, DAVIS, the Manganaro Family, and Sandy Spring Bank.
This year’s Authors’ Committee, under the leadership of Liz Glass and Jennifer Nespole, has put together a truly dynamic slate of author panels. In a world where sound bites, tweets and three-minute news segments overwhelm us withinformation that only touches the surface of a topic, an opportunity for an extended presentation that allows us to dig more deeply into an issue is hard to find. Today is one of those opportunities.
Enjoy your day, and thank you for coming.

ROOM 1: KATHARINE HALL
10:00 am – Zucked: Waking Up to the FacebookCatastropheRoger McNamee, noted tech venture capitalist, mentor to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and early Facebook investor, is now one of the social network’s biggest critics. In Zucked, McNamee posits that Facebook and other tech giants have grown into a monstrous threat to our democracy. Weaving together a story of failed leadership, bad actors and algorithms, along with the 2016 presidential election, McNamee offers solutions to what he deems the disaster of today’s social media giant. Kara Swisher, technology business journalist and co-founder of Recode, moderates.
11:00 am – Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of AmericaJames and Deborah Fallows spent five years travelling across America in a single-engine prop plane, examining common issues facing its citizens—from declining industries, toassimilating waves of immigration, to solving the opioid epidemic. Although there is dysfunction at the national level of government stemming from political polarization, their book, Our Towns, shows how local governments have found ways to tackle their issues and reform their communities bycollaborating across party lines to solve problems and make things better. Moderated by Maggie Dods, U.S. Naval Academy midshipman and Rhodes Scholar.
12:00 pm – On the Other Side of Freedom: The Case for HopeBased on his own experiences as a community activist, organizer, educator, and public official, DeRay Mckesson writes of a new civil rights movement based on hope.Mckesson states that combating injustice has been stymied by the belief that racism’s wounds are past history. In his book On the Other Side of Freedom, he offers a new framework and language for understanding the nature of oppression. Esquire says the book is “an aspiring reminder that hope is vital to any political change, and it’s the driving force for any successful attempt at social justice.” Ivan Bates, Baltimore attorney, moderates.
1:00 pm – Hacked? Russia and the 2016 Election Journalist Michael Isikoff, in Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump (co-author David Corn), tells of how American democracy was hacked by Moscow as part of an undercover operation to influence the 2016 election and help Donald Trump gain the presidency. Professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson, in Cyberwar: How Russian Hackers and Trolls Helped Elect a President, attempts to answer such questions as: What characteristics of social media did the Russians exploit? Did the Russian influence extend beyond social media and news to alter James
Comey’s behavior? How extensive was the troll messaging? Moderated by April Doss, attorney and former senior minority counsel for the Russia Investigation in the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
2:00 pm – Ken Starr and the Clinton InvestigationIt has been twenty years since the Clinton impeachment hearings. Former special prosecutor Ken Starr, in Contempt: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation, shares his personal account of this divisive period in American history. Detailing the scandals of Whitewater, Vince Foster’s death, Travelgate, and Monica Lewinsky, Starr contends that the Clintons were not victims of a “vast right-wing conspiracy”; rather, they played loosely with the law and abused their powers and privileges. John Beed, senior U.S. diplomat, moderates.
3:00 pm – On the Border: Immigration in AmericaIn The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America, acclaimed historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist Greg Grandin provides a new interpretation of the meaning of the frontier, from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War and from to the New Deal to the 2016 election. The frontier was once a symbol of endless promise; the foundation of our belief as an exceptional nation. Today, the new symbol of a border wall is, as Grandin calls it, an allegori-cal tombstone that marks the end of American exceptionalism. Moderated by Marc Rodriguez, Annapolis alderman.
4:00 pm – First: Sandra Day O’ConnorNew York Times bestselling author Evan Thomas draws on exclusive interviews and never-before-accessed archives to produce an inspiring and intimate biography of America’s first female Supreme Court justice. A pioneering woman success-fully seeking to thrive in an all-male world, Sandra Day O’Connor was a critical swing vote on the bench who crafted compromises on affirmative action, abortion and other contentious issues. Alexandra Wrage, president and founder of TRACE International, moderates.
ROOM 2: BARN COMMONS
10:00 am – Rob Hiaasen’s Float Plan, Presented by Maria HiaasenMaria Hiaasen will be leading the discussion of her late husband Rob Hiaasen’s novel, Float Plan. As mostAnnapolitans know, Hiaasen was slain nearly ago by a gunman in the Capital Gazette newsroom. In this work of fiction, the former columnist and editor tells the story of Will Larkin and his perfectly routine life…until everything comes undone in the span of just one year. American University professor Iris Krasnow moderates.

11:00 am – Life Lessons from Mothers to DaughtersJo Giese pays tribute to her mother in her latest memoir Never Sit If You Can Dance: Lessons from My Mother, Babe. Always thinking the last thing she ever wanted was to be like her mother, Giese has come to realize her own happiness is primarily because of life lessons her mother taught her. About My Mother by Peggy Rowe tells the true story of the balancing act between her, a horse-crazy tomboy daughter, and her whacky baseball-obsessed mom. Moderated by Laura Black, entrepreneur, attorney, community leader, and writer.
12:00 pm – The Trump White House: Changing the Rules of the GameNew York Times bestselling author Ronald Kessler provides an inside story of Trump’s White House. Based on exclusive interviews, Kessler reveals who influences the President, how he makes decisions, what he says about his advisors and staff, and how he operates away from the television cameras. U.S. Naval Academy professor Stephen Wrage moderates.
1:00 pm – The New Race to SpaceIn Chasing New Horizons, astrobiologist and prize-winning author David Grinspoon (with co-author Alan Stern) writes of NASA’s amazing mission to Pluto in 2015, as well as its plans for the next encounter. As Science News says of the book, “Even if you followed the [Pluto] flyby closely and think you know this story, the book divulges details that will surprise you. Come for the sweeping tale of wonder and exploration; stay for the gaggle of planetary scientists celebrating on Bourbon Street once their mission finally got the green light.” NASA space engineer Michael Akkerman moderates.
2:00 pm – In Pursuit: The Hunt for the Beltway SnipersIn 2002, David Reichenbaugh was the criminal intelligence operations commander for the Maryland State Police, as well as the commanding officer at the scene during the capture of Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad who would later be referred to as the “Beltway Snipers.” In this riveting tale, Reichenbaugh brings the reader behind the scenes and into the world of investigators trying to solve the case that terrorized citizens in Maryland, Virginia and DC for weeks on end and ended with 10 people killed and others wounded.Moderated by WBAL investigative reporter Jayne Miller.
3:00 pm – Road to Disaster: A New History of America’s Descent into VietnamWhile countless books have been written about the tragic decisions regarding Vietnam made by advisors in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, none have explained why these brilliant and previously successful men stumbled terribly. In Road to Disaster, historian Brian VanDeMark not only employs painstaking archival research and interviews, he uses recent studies in cognitive science, psychology and organizational theory to explain why the “best and brightest” became
trapped in their own thinking and blind to their decision-making errors. U.S. Naval Academy professor Stephen Wrage moderates.
4:00 pm – Freak Kingdom: Hunter S. Thompson’s Crusade Against American FascismProfessor and author Timothy Denevi writes of Hunter S. Thompson and his life-defining campaign to stop what he saw as Richard Nixon’s treacherous populism. Often seen as a jokester and drug-afflicted cartoon character, Thompson truly was a fearless opponent of corruption and fascism, and he rewrote the rules of journalism and political satire to fight against it. Baltimore-DC radio personality Alex Cortright moderates.
ROOM 3: SCIENCE & LIBRARY CENTER ROOMS 101-102
10:00 am – Your Maryland GardenGinger Woolridge, in Essential Native Trees and Shrubs for the Eastern United States (co-author Tony Dove), offers suggestions for home gardeners on choosing the right species based on a plant’s performance, aesthetic appeal and a wide range of adaptability to our region. The Humane Gardener by Nancy Lawson outlines how and why to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Specifically, she shows how to create habitats that shelter baby animals, cohabitate with creatures often thought of as pests, and encourage natural evolution in a garden. Moderated by local horticulturalist Kyle Marsh fromGreenstreet Gardens.
11:00 am – Seeking a Safe Haven: Stories of the HolocaustMichael Dobbs, in The Unwanted: America, Auschwitz, and a Village Caught in Between, powerfully writes about a group of German Jews seeking American visas to escape Nazi Germany and America’s less-than-welcoming response to the refugee crisis of the 1930s and 1940s. In Counting on America: A Holocaust Memoir of Terror, Chutzpah, Romance, and Escape (co-author Kurt Reiner), Gary Reiner details the rise of anti-Semitism after the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938 and the obstacles Jewish refugees faced trying to relocate to America. Moderated by Anne Merrill, digital content strategist and editor at the Levine Institute for Holocaust Education in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
12:00 pm – You’re Never Too OldMaria Leonard Olsen, in 50 After 50: Reframing the Next Chapter of Your Life, describes how she set out at 50 years of age to do fifty new things that were significant to her—ranging from physical challenges and adventure travels to lifestyle changes. She shows that one is never too old to rediscover one’s self and find a new purpose in life. Moderated by Festival fan favorite and literary critic Bethanne Patrick.

1:00 pm – SELF-ish: A Transgender AwakeningSELF-ish details the inner identity and spiritual struggle of Chloe Schwenke as she transitioned to a woman. Raised as Stephen by a Marine Corps family, Schwenke was sent to a military academy at the age of 14. Still embodied as a man, she travelled throughout the world and worked in some of the roughest areas of Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey. After a spiritual and existential struggle, she realized she was a transgender woman and made the challenging gender transition. Her incredible journey includes being among the first three transgender political appointees in U.S. history under President Obama. Newly elected Maryland State Senator Sarah Elfreth moderates.
2:00 pm – American Hate: Survivors Speak OutCommunity activist and civil rights lawyer Arjun Singh Sethi has compiled stories of those affected by hate crimes in the United States. Survivors, in their own words, share how the rhetoric and policies of the current administration have given rise to bullying, discrimination and violence towards people who are black, Arab, Southeast Asian, Muslim, Jewish, undocumented, refugees, transgender, and disabled. NPR named the work a “Best Book of 2018” and states, “Amid the ugly realities of contemporary America, American Hate affirms our courage and inspiration, opening a roadmap toreconciliation by means of the victims’ own words.”Jenifer Moore, Key School Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, moderates.
3:00 pm – No Access DC: Hidden Treasures, Haunts and Forgotten PlacesBeth Kanter takes the reader on a journey of the nation’s Capital rarely or never seen on postcards but “gaze-worthy” just the same. Annapolis contributor and co-founder of the Facebook group Annapolis Moms.
4:00 pm – Fiction: What Luck, This LifeBeginning with the explosion of the Columbia Space Shuttle over the East Texas town of Kiser, this debut novel by Kathryn Schwille tells a tale of how one catastrophe uncovers another set of unfortunate circumstances and secrets in the lives of the people on the ground. What Luck, This Life evokes Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio. Fellow fiction author Barbara Klein Moss moderates.
ROOM 4: SCIENCE AND LIBRARY CENTER LIBRARY
11:00 am – Writing Back to the African ContinentNovelists Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi and Tope Folarin along with poet Vivek Narayanan discuss the experience of writing back to the African (or any other) continent from abroad, and whether there is such a thing as the proximity of distance. Moderated by prize-winning author Olufemi Terry.
12:00 pm – Fiction: ThrillersSunrise Highway, the latest thriller by Peter Blauner, is the story of a young police officer on the trail of a serial killer who eventually discovers a string of connections between the victims and top political leaders along New York’s Route 27. Reese Witherspoon named The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine her choice for her December 2018 book club reading. A page-turner filled with envy, deception and power, this is a must-read for lovers of thrills and chills. Doug Norton, author of Code Word: Pandora, moderates.
1:00 pm – When the Crowd Didn’t Roar: How Baseball Gave a Broken City HopeApril 29, 2015. Freddie Gray’s death while in police custody has sparked devastating riots in Baltimore, and just thirty-six hours later, the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox take their positions in Camden Yards for a game they will never forget. It was the only Major League ball game ever played without a single fan. Kevin Cowherd, in When the Crowd Didn’t Roar: How Baseball’s Strangest Game Ever Gave a Broken City Hope, details this extraordinary event; from the tragedy leading up to it, through the therapeutic effect the game had on this city in turmoil. Trying to make sense of his new world after surviving the horrors of battle, Will clearly demonstrates that the impact of war lingers far past the last gunshots of war. Gods of Wood and Stone: A Novel by Mark Di Ionno tells of two men, joined together by America’s favorite pastime of baseball, and their search for what really constitutes a meaningful life. Key School Upper School Humanities faculty member Bob McCarthy moderates.
3:00 pm – Parenting: The Good News About Bad BehaviorJournalist and parenting expert Katherine Reynolds Lewis outlines a new theory of discipline that focuses on teaching children self-control. It’s vital that children learn independence and responsibility, yet traditional methods of punishment and rewards are actually undermining self-regulation. She states that if parents allow children to face consequences, their kids will, in turn, adjust their own behavior. Moderated by Key School First School Division Head Becky Fetters.
