Adam StokerSustainability Consultant, University of CalgaryAdam Stoker has more than 10 years of experience working with energy efficiency and sustainable buildings. Adam has worked on over 50 LEED projects across western Canada In his current role with the University of Calgary he is focused on the delivery of high performance green buildings and sites, and is part of the team delivering the $280 million MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment Project – one of 16 projects participating in the CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Pilot Program.

Professional Development WorkshopsZero Carbon Building Standard Ready to take on the challenge of Zero Carbon? This half-day workshop will introduce you to zero carbon buildings, with particular emphasis on the CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Standard. Participants will be equipped with important foundational knowledge, as well as an understanding of how the ZCB Standard could potentially be used for their current or future projects. The workshop covers the requirements of the Zero Carbon Building Standard for both new and existing buildings.

This includes:• The zero carbon balance;• The zero carbon transition plan;• Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI);• Energy Use Intensity (EUI)

• Peak demand;• Renewable energy; and• Embodied carbon

This workshop provides the opportunity to learn from a subject matter expert in a facilitated environment. Exercises and group discussion help to reinforce the material. Note: This workshop is not intended to provide professional level knowledge on how to develop strategies or prepare supporting documentation forprogram compliance.

Grace SuriBuilding Energy Consultant, Morrison Hershfield Grace mostly focuses on building science, sustainable building practices, building thermal energy modeling, building energy assessments and hygrothermal component modelling. She applies her engineering knowledge on projects that include new construction, as well as calibrating energy models to provide energy conservation measures, performing design parametric analysis, life cycle assessments, and compliance modeling for Code and LEED and other standards.

Thermal Bridging & Envelope DesignThis session will run through the new requirements for thermal bridging calculations and design options. (Consultant) will speak about the new NECB requirements and compare common assemblies and their previous thermal performance against the new detailed calculation methodology. This leads to how much more heat loss is actually expected in buildings and how this affects sizing of systems along with energy code requirements. While understanding how thermal bridging will affect the detailed design of envelopes it is important to have a practical understand about the constructability of these details. The second half of the workshop will take attendees through examples as built of assemblies that have been constructed to mitigate thermal bridging.

Day 3 | October 9Building Resilience Through Innovation & Retrofits

Opening Remarks

Councillor Michael WaltersCity of EdmontonCouncillor Michael Walters was first elected to Edmonton City Council in 2013 and was re-elected to his second term on October 16, 2017. Prior to entering public office, Michael spent two decades working as a community organizer and public policy leader. Councillor Walters leads initiatives on housing, energy and climate change and sits on various Edmonton Metropolitan Regional Board committees.

Keynote: Cities & Carbon Budgets: Edmonton’s Challenge

Cities contribute most of global carbon emissions, and therefore have a critical responsibility for dealing with their effects. Cities globally need to embrace carbon budgeting to keep warming below 1.5 degrees globally, a target committed to in the Edmonton Declaration, a bold call to action to reduce climate change, endorsed by more than 4,500 cities around the world. As it stands, the world has about 600 gigatonnes of emissions left in its carbon budget until 2050 in or to keep the temperatures down. Right now, our trajectory exceeds that goal decades early.

We can see climate change happening before our eyes. With an ever-increasing amount of flooding, forest fires, extreme weather events, and a rising global temperature, it’s clear that we have work to do – and cities have a major role to play.

Councillor Walters discusses why the carbon budget is so important, and how big cities need to take a lead role in tightening up the way we interact with the environment.

Moving Health & Wellness in Buildings Beyond a Trend Health and wellness is a much talked about topic and on trend for designers everywhere, whether we are talking about food, lifestyle, or work spaces. The most critical aspects of health and wellness in the built environment though, are the underlying strategies that last throughout the life of the building, rather than in the moment of popularity. By incorporating these critical aspects in to design guidelines and specifications, we build health and wellness into the foundations of buildings.

IN GREEN ALBERTANOVEMBER 5 | CALGARY, AB

Leadership in Green Buildings

Celebrate Women in the Green Building Industry and Discuss Equity and Diversity by 2030At the end of the day, it’s not so much about what you do, but about why you do it. CaGBC is introducing Women in Green Alberta to examine the power of purpose to shape our lives, our careers and our changing world.

Climate change is the challenge of our lifetime. Women in the green building industry across diverse industry sectors play a key role in helping Canada forge pathways to a zero-carbon future. Yet women in green represent a minority of the green building industry workforce, particularly in leadership roles.

Join us for this special event hosted in partnership with SAIT’s School of Construction as part of a series of Women in Green events across the country. The CaGBC is committed to continuing the conversation around women and diversity in the green building sector. This event will be chaired by the CaGBC Alberta Chapter Leadership Board Chair Melanie Ross, and will feature a presentation by Lisa Bate, Chair of the World Green Building Council, followed by a fire-side chat with some of Alberta’s champions of “Every Building Greener”!
