Major donors toured PBS Hawai‘i’s new home at 315 Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu after a mahalo cere-mony September 21. Left, CEO Leslie Wilcox and Board Chair Robbie Alm untie the maile lei fronting the building.

Maui's Daniel O'Hanlon of the Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation takes a photo of our exterior donor wall, where the names of those who gave $1,000 or more to our capital campaign are honored.

CEO Leslie Wilcox holds up an image of the late Karen Watanabe, a retired public school teacher whose bequest completed PBS Hawai‘i’s capital campaign.

Representatives from the three largest contributors to our capital campaign stand together in support of PBS Hawai‘i: Donn Wein-berg of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation; Robert Fujioka of The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation; and Gov. David Ige, on behalf of the State of Hawai‘i.

McKinley High School teacher Mara Kaizawa-Miyata looks on as her student, Noah Diaz, addresses the crowd about his experience as a participant in PBS Hawai‘i’s digital learning initiative, HIKI NŌ.

General Managers of PBS stations across the country met last month for a strategy session, looking at what kind of programming is needed most in our country, and how to make the content more responsive and more interactive.

And in this election year of deep divisions and neg-ativity, we compared notes on our television stations’ political debates and other forums. Longtime station managers remarked that they’d never seen so many lo-cal incumbents decline to appear with their challengers on live telecasts and live web streams.

“These incumbents have the money to create their own messages through advertising, and that’s what they’re doing instead,” said Tom Axtell, the head of Vegas PBS and a member of the PBS Board of Directors. Another GM noted that many candidates no longer feel obligated to appear alongside their competition because they can speak to the public through low-cost social media.

In Hawai‘i, we had our share of incumbents turning down participation in our weekly election forum on Insights on PBS Hawai‘i, noting scheduling confl icts. We know that candidates are busy, so we generally ask them early. And we realize that incumbents may not be terribly motivated to let their lesser-known competitors receive statewide air time.

In addition, incumbents from 34 Hawai‘i State House and Senate races faced no opposition from another major-party candidate.

We even had a challenger withdraw from a General Elec-tion forum. That was Honolulu Mayoral candidate and po-litical veteran Charles Djou. His campaign contended that it had never committed to the forum. (Before the Primary Election, Djou did take part in our forum with incumbent Mayor Kirk Caldwell and former Mayor Peter Carlisle.)

The rebuff s by candidates in some major races had a silver lining, freeing up TV time for district races, espe-cially outside Honolulu and beyond O‘ahu. Incumbents and challengers with diff erent ideas sat down at the same table, engaging in some interesting, vigorous and respectful discussions.

Viewers could feel the fresh breeze of democracy. At its best, this civil discourse provided much-needed sub-stance and helped voters make their choice at the polls.

As Communications Professor John Hart of Hawai‘i Pacifi c University commented in a Honolulu Civil Beat podcast with reporter Chad Blair last October 10: “I still believe [debates] are our best chance to see past the pseudo-events, the slick advertisements. When you hear someone talk for an hour, you get a sense of who they are.”

This public media organization wants to thank all of the election candidates who accepted our invitation to inform voters by answering viewer questions and taking part in civil discourse on Insights on PBS Hawai‘i.

Gaylord Holomalia has engineered and produced records for an array of artists, from high-profi le pop stars like Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Jay-Z, to Hawai‘i favor-ites including Israel Kamakawio‘ole, Henry Kapono, Keali‘i Reichel and Jake Shimabukuro. He’s worked on many PBS Hawai‘i music specials and on Na Mele, our weekly Hawaiian music showcase. When he’s not helping other artists in the studio, Holomalia plays keyboards with the band Kalapana. He took some time out to talk with PBS Hawai‘i about his music recording experiences.

How would you defi ne what a producer is? Why are producers important?

A producer is the person who oversees and manag-es the recording and production of the music. Most of the time, though, in Hawai‘i, the artists are co-produc-ing or producing their own project, and sometimes I become an engineer/producer. [Producers are import-ant] mostly to keep everyone on the same page and to help see a new artist through the process.

How did you transition from being a musician, to pro-ducing and engineering other musician’s records?

After being [in] a few recordings with diff erent artists, I became interested on what was happening on the other side of the glass in the studio. Then I was asked to produce a band and ended up co-producing the album with the owner of Sea West Studios, out in Hau‘ula. Rick Keefer was the owner and he had moved his studio here from Seattle, where Heart did a few recordings. After the project was done, Rick off ered to teach me about engineering if I would do keyboard sessions for some of his productions in his studio. After a summer of doing that, he and his wife went on a long vacation and had me run the studio. While they were gone, I had Crosby, Stills and Nash in the studios working on their album for three months.

What are the advantages and challenges of producing music in Hawai‘i?

Well, you get to work with so many diff erent kinds of music because of how diverse we are here. I really don’t see any challenges.

Makuakāne in Hawaiian means “father” – and it’s a surname that Kenneth Makuakāne has fully em-braced and exemplifi ed. As a father to his children, he has provided support and love. As a Papa Makua for the Association of Hawaiian Evangelical Churches, he has been a guiding voice of faith. And as an artist, he has off ered creative counsel, shaping the sounds of scores of musicians throughout his long career.

Na Mele features this intimate and emotional per-formance captured in the historic Kawaiaha‘o Church, and an opportunity to learn more about Makuakāne.

Makuakāne is a musical artist in every sense of the word – songwriter, record producer and perform-er. As a songwriter and innovator in producing and recording traditional Hawaiian music, he has over a hundred albums to his credit, including projects with the Brothers Cazimero, Nā Leo Pilimehana, the Pan-danus Club, Amy Hānaiali‘i Gilliom and Loyal Garner.

Despite armfuls of Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ha-wai‘i Academy of Recording Arts Hall of Fame, Makuakāne maintains the humble disposition of a man who sees himself as a conduit of art, rather than a musical genius.

Throughout his decades of songwriting, he has learned that a beautiful melody unfolds naturally, inspired by vibrant memories and meaningful rela-tionships. His voice is both assertive and tender, and while he has the charisma to command the stage, it is the knowing glances between him and his fellow performers, and his quiet moments of refl ection, that pull an audience in.

When he sings, he is transported to another time, and it is all but impossible not to be swept away with him.

“I can smell the fragrance, I can see the faces, I can feel the feelings,” Makuakāne says. “I can totally embrace and encompass myself with that experi-ence…and I’m building these deeper meanings for myself, so that I can walk back into that. It’s almost like going back in time.”

In the warm embrace of Kawaiaha‘o Church, one of the oldest standing Christian places of worship in Hawai‘i, friends and family join Makuakāne for a sentimental and candid performance.

Framed by the Church’s altar, Hawaiian-slack key guitarist Stephen Inglis accompanies Makuakāne for “O Violeka,” an aff ectionate ballad Makuakāne wrote for his mother. “Ku‘u Pua Lei Mēlia” speaks to the diffi culty of sending a child off into the world, written for Makuakāne’s oldest son, Kawaipuna, when he went off to college.

His two sons join his performance – the young Pono drawing on his father’s sense of playfulness in creating music, and the older Kawaipuna, playing “Ka Napoleona O Ka Pakipika;” grounding his father’s soaring vocals with the earthy beats of his cajón.

For Makuakāne, Kawaiaha‘o Church serves not merely as a symbolic backdrop for his music, but also as a physical representation of the role faith plays in his life. Music, he believes, has the ability to touch and connect people in the same intangible yet powerful way that spirituality does for so many. Hear-ing his voice soar through the church’s historic halls, one can’t deny that raw power of his music.

NA MELE: KENNETH MAKUAKĀNE Monday, November 21, 7:30 pm

By Emilie Howlett

Kenneth Makuakāne and guitarist Stephen Inglis are featured in this taped performance at Kawaiaha‘o Church in Honolulu.

Founded in 1924 in memory of Saint Marianne, Saint Francis School in Manoa inherits the legacy of Saint Marianne Cope, who dedicated her life to the care of those suff ering from Hansen’s disease on Moloka‘i. “It is that same spirt of love and caring that we off er our children in pre-school to grade 12,” states Sister Joan of Arc Souza, Head of School.
