New Year’s Eve at Lost Acres

Margaret Suits, Nancy Biggerstaff and Jane Hughston are Celebrating the New Year with Sparklers

Fourteen WLA Upstate members and 2 children attended the 3rd Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration at Lost Acres. Linda and Dick Deahl were in the area for the holidays and met up with the group. There was plenty of food and hot cocoa. Members roasted hot dogs, smokies, and marshmallows. John Harris roasted chestnuts collected from their tree. Midnight was celebrated with the lighting of sparklers. In spite of the cold and with the help of a roaring bonfire, everyone had a great time.

January WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on January 12th at New China Restaurant. Twenty-one members and one guest attended. Dr. Mark Fullerton (left) spoke on Effective Weight Control. He outlined the reasons why diets and meal replacement programs do not provide lasting results. As an Executive Promoter of ViSalus, he reviewed the benefits of the company’s weight loss shakes. Dee Fullerton informed the group about the AWES International Foundation’s January 30th Health/Wellness Fair and concert “Music for the Soul in All Seasons” held at the District 5 Fine Arts Center in Duncan, SC.

2014 Upstate Educational Activities

During 2014, 692 children from 15 schools or organ-izations participated in educational activities led by WLA Upstate volunteers. A total of 609 bird boxes were assembled by the participants. Four of the sessions were held at their facilities. The offsite activities included Skins & Skulls and Bird Boxes. A listing of the events compiled by Jane Hughston was recently distributed to the WLA Upstate members. Check with Jane Hughston if you would like a copy.

Birthday Includes Bird Boxes

Hatcher Garden and Wood- land Preserve was the site of a birthday party for 3-year old Jefferson (left) and his friends on January 24th. The party started with members of WLA Upstate assisting the children in assembling bird boxes. This was a great learning experience for the children, their parents and the ever patient WLA Upstate volunteers.

Eastern Bluebirds are House Hunting

Winter is the time when pairs of birds start hunting for suitable nests. Left is a male Eastern Blue- bird examining a bird box while his mate watches. The Anschel’s also have seen Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees, House Wrens and Carolina Wrens regularly inspecting their four bird boxes this winter.

WLA Upstate Photo Contest Winners The two winning entries for the 2014 WLA Upstate Photo Contest were independently selected by members of the Spartan Photo Center. These are the two winning photos.

Photo by Steven Anschel Photo by Barry Long

Steven Anschel took the left photo of a little girl holding an earthworm during the WLA Upstate Pioneer Day morning fishing event with his Nikon D310 camera. Barry Long took the right photo of a Great Blue Heron with his Canon 20D camera. Both photos were submitted to WLA National as the WLA Upstate entries for the 2014 WLA National Photo Contest.

New Enclosed Building for WLA Upstate

Dick Cassel, Project Manager for the new construction, announced that the new, enclosed building construction was assigned to Glen Koepke. The first step will be to grade the area and pour a 65’ x 30’ concrete slab. See building layout design on www.wlaupstate.org.

March WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on March 9th at the New China Restaurant. Twenty-one members attended the meeting. The speaker was WLA Upstate member Mary Taylor (left) who spoke on genetically modified foods. These foods are produced from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). The US is one of the few industrialized countries that does not require GMO labeling. The most common GMO containing foods are corn, soy, canola and cotton seed oil. They were engineered to resist pathogens and herbicides (such as Monsanto’s Roundup). For more information contact Mary for a copy of “Non-GMO Guide: Food Secrets for a Long and Healthy Life.”

Wild Day at Lost Acres

This year’s Wild Day was held on Saturday, May 9th. A total of 47 children along with 20 parents participated in the Scavenger Hunt, Archery, Leaf Printing, Skins & Skulls, BB Gun target practice and building Bird Boxes. Twenty-eight members of WLA Upstate volunteered for the event. We greatly appreciate the fantastic chili prepared by Leneda Cassel. Hotdogs, buns, chips, condi-ments and paper products for lunch were donated by Spartanburg Costco Wholesale. Each child took home a backpack also provided by Costco. Special thanks go to the WLA Upstate members who donated food and volunteered for Wild Day. Everyone had a great time.

May WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting

Speaker Sgt. Tony E Brown and Dick Cassel

The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on May 11th at Lost Acres. We had a great turnout with 28 members, 4 Pioneers, 2 guests and 2 presenters attending the covered dish dinner and presentation. The speaker was Sgt. Tony E Brown of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division who talked about various forms of scams ranging from door-to-door to internet and passed around printed examples. His advice is if you think it could be a scam, Google it! If you are scammed, immediately report it to law enforcement and file a Law Enforcement Report. Unfortunately, when funds are sent overseas, typically to Nigeria, they cannot be retrieved. Sgt. Brown also distributed copies of “Taking Charge – What to do if your identity is stolen” by the Federal Trade Commission.

Upstate Photography Photo Shoot

Nine members of the Upstate Photography Meetup group enjoyed the morning of May 2nd

photographing the large collection of Pink Lady’s Slippers at Lost Acres. The full sun filtering through the trees made for exceptional photo shoot conditions.

St James Methodist Kindergarten

On April 30th, 9 kindergartner’s from St James Methodist Church spent the morning at Lost Acres assembling bird boxes, walking the nature trail, decorating bird feeders, and printing leaves on shirts. Thanks to Henry and Janet Grimsley, Jane Hughston, and Jim and Nancy Biggerstaff Photo by Charlotte Tamel for assisting.

The annual WLA Upstate Yard Sale was held on Saturday, May 16th from 7:30 AM until noon at John’s TV. Hundreds of items ranging from Christmas decorations to an electric organ were displayed on this absolutely beautiful day. Thanks to John and Linda Harris who let us use their facilities, provided refreshments and lunch. Thanks also to everyone who provided donations and the 20 WLA Upstate volunteers who helped make the Yard Sale a success. Our Chapter took in $1,844.10 for the WLA Upstate Building Fund.

Recycling Cans for Bird Box Nails

Jane Hughston and Polly Bennett took 162 lbs. of cans to OmniSource for recycling. They received $81 which will be used to purchase nails for bluebird boxes. Thanks to everyone who contributed cans.

I talked with my boss at the Scout office downtown Spartanburg. He mentioned that we could help you with some of those projects around there as a Service Project for my unit. Probably the best thing is to get a list of everything that needs to be completed. If there is ever anything to assist you or any others with at Lost Acres - please let me know.”

Walking Along the Nature Trail

Following all of the rain in the Upstate during October, the Nature Trail was covered with sourwood trees covered with red leaves, bright green moss, light green lichen and fungi of all types. Nancy Biggerstaff spotted beautiful ringed bracket fungi on dead trees. Even the black cherry burl specimen was covered with moss and several mushrooms each less than one inch tall.

November WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting

The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on November 9th at the North Spartanburg Fire Station. Fourteen WLA Upstate members and 4 Firefighters attended. Thanks to everyone who supplied a main course, side dish or dessert. Jane Hughston reported that during 2015 WLA Upstate Chapter participated in 21 activities that involved 1,024 children. See the newsletters at www.wlaupstate.org/news/news.htm for details of all of the events. Jim Biggerstaff mentioned that he recently received 3 truckloads of lumber from United Forest Products, Inc. for future bird boxes.

Battalion Chief Nick Fortner (right) of the North Spartanburg Fire District was the guest speaker. He talked about the operations of the Fire District. The 911 operators use a graduated system to assess the nature and severity of a call. Delta and Echo level calls are routed to the Fire District. They receive about 2,800 fire and emergency calls per year. It takes 7-8 minutes to get to any location in the District. Other Districts may also respond if they are closer. Fortner mentioned that fire engines may appear at the scene of an accident to deflect cars and protect medics. He emphasized the “close the door” approach to isolating a house fire, namely, a closed door reduces the spread of fire to other rooms and increases your chance of survival. Also controlled burns are limited to natural materials and only during daylight hours. You should advise the Fire District if you are planning a controlled burn.

NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION AT LOST ACRES

WLA members and their guests are invited to attend the Fourth Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration at Lost Acres on Thursday, December 31st starting at 9:30 PM. There will be a traditional bonfire at the Fire Ring with roasted chestnuts. Bring snacks (hotdogs, marsh-mallows, s’mores, etc.) and hot chocolate to share as the New Year is welcomed in at Lost Acres. Contact Jane Hughston at 576-2236 for weather cancellation information or check the website (www.wlaupstate.org) for any updates.

Westview Elem. 4th Graders at Lost Acres

Over two days (October 29 – 30), 138 fourth graders from Westview Elementary School spent their day at Lost Acres. The activities included watching the new Eddie Eagle video, assembling bird boxes, learning about nature along the ¾ mile Nature Trail and studying about animal skins and skulls. Thank you to the WLA Upstate volunteers who made this a fun and educational event for students and teachers.

In appreciation, the 4th Grade classes participate in an ongoing aluminum can collection program. They regularly donate the cans to the WLA Upstate Chapter. The proceeds from recycling the cans are used by the Chapter to purchase nails for assembling bird boxes.

Wildlife Prints with Duck Hunter Stamps

Dick and Linda Deahl donated framed, signed, and numbered wildlife prints, stamps and letters of authenticity for the WLA Upstate Chapter to sell. Most are SC Duck Stamp prints. Duck hunters must have the stamp to shoot waterfowl. There is an annual stamp contest with the winning entry appearing at http://dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/stamps/ducks.html. The winning entry is used for that year’s stamp and print. The lighthouse series prints all have the same number which should appeal to collectors. For additional information and to purchase them, contact John Harris at 576-4781 or email him at [email protected].
