When I walked into my first Cullulleraine Music Festival I was stunned. Having not been in the Lake Cullulleraine area for many years I had no idea what to expect.

What I discovered was a site of great beauty, and, after having set up camp, to top it off, everywhere I walked I was immersed in music, musicians rehearsing, playing together for the fun of it, sharing stories, kids on drums and all before we came past Food Street to the Main Stage.

The Cullulleraine Music Festival Committee is delighted to welcome you to the fourth festival. Our committee is mindful of the great work of the founding Committee led by Chair Colleen Barnes, supported by all at Bushmen’s Rest Caravan Park and the Millewa Community.

One of the greatest features of a festival is when you encounter brilliant music, played well. Good music doesn’t have an expiration date…

I loved this festival from the ‘get-go’ so it is a pleasure to work with a vision shared, that of Music Director Chris Rogers, to create something fabulous in this special place. Our new committee, a team with many talents, has worked quite tirelessly to organise and deliver a mix of music, activity, food and culture. Thanks team, and thanks also to all our volunteers who have taken on many roles.

LINEUP: FRIDAY APRIL 13

Please take the opportunity to learn drums with Catherine, write creatively with Barry, paint or draw with two local legends Steve and Anne, walk up on Stage 2 and sing, play guitar, dance.

We invite you to Immerse yourself in a weekend that connects to a wide cluster of events, cultural displays and community activities, all complemented with a range of foods, drinks and wares. Relax and take it all in. Experience and savour the ‘slow food’ produced and presented from our region.

We thank our Sponsors, they have allowed us to shape this event at a new site, the Johansen Memorial Reserve, adjacent to the Lake Cullulleraine Holiday Park.

We hope you enjoy this Festival with it’s fabulous mix of local and national talent, food and events. Above all we hope you have the pleasure of being - here.

And I have pleasure in acknowledging the First Peoples of the Millewa Mallee, the Ngintait, Nyeri Nyeri, Werigia & Latjie Latjie on whose lands we gather; we acknowledge their Elders past and present and celebrate the heritage of a land connected to people.

CAT & CLINTTHE MAE’S KEIRA SMITH TWO IF BY SEATHE HOT POTATO BAND

THE BLUESBERRIES This Mildura band is made up of Ian McDonald (bass, vocals), Ian Smythe (guitar, vocals, harmonica, slide) and Neil Thomson (drums, vocals) .The Bluesberries lend their musical influences to artists including the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Neil Young.

CAT AND CLINTAn Old Timey Duo featuring sweet vocal harmonies, 5-string banjo, fiddle, dulcimer and banjo ukulele. They are inspired and driven by the spirit of Traditional Appalachian Mountain Music and the passing down of fiddle tunes and ballads through generations. The duo play regularly in Bars, Festivals, Woodchops, Markets, Shindigs, Hootenannys and have busked all around. They mix up their repertoire w ith Clints original songs and a good d ose of vintage country blues.

CIGÁNY WEAVERCigány Weaver are one of Australia’s most exciting gypsy-jazz ensembles who’s virtuosic and energetic live performances invoke everything from subtle toe-tapping to exuberant dance floor foot-stomping.

CORNELL DAVITTReturning to the festival this year is Cornell Davitt, a singer/songwriter from Mildura. A founding member of alt/country outfit Ruby’s Caution Horse, Cornell stepped away from the electric sound that defined his evocative songs of love and life and is performing solo.

ENDA KENNYEnda Kenny is an Irish-Born songwriter who has made his home in Melbourne, since the late 1980’s. His thoughtful, descriptive stories of his adoptive homeland have struck a chord with festival audiences all over Australia and are always memorable and spiced with plenty of humour. A multi-award winning songwriter and twice winner of the Port Fairy Folk Festival songwriting award, Enda’s recent compositions highlight his quirky sense of humour and add to an already impressive catalogue of songs.

HONEYFIELDSHoneyfields may look familiar but their interpretations of old and new songs are refreshing, original, and steeped in the Australian folk music culture they grew up with. A new project from The Beenies girls, the trio are back performing vocal and instrumental music at its finest.

HOT POTATO BAND The Hot Potato Band are Known to cause a severe case of happy fever, this 10 piece brass band is sure to put a smile on your face in an incredibly unique live show. The Hot Potato Band have become one of the most celebrated festival bands in Australia, evolving from their roots as a roving band on the streets of Sydney, they continue to capture their unique energy and interaction on stage. The band has put an Australian edge to its ‘multi-genre’ music which is influenced by ska, blues, funk, pop, reggae, afro-cuban and folk, as well as the classic brass band sounds of New Orleans.

IAIN ELLIS AND THE DEEP SEA DIVERSLocal singer and songwriter Iain Ellis and (his words) band of merry sea-monkeys, the Deep Sea Divers, will be playing a mix of mainly acoustic rock with lyrics that are honest, moving, funny and inspiring. Just what we had in mind for a laid back Friday night sesh at the Lake Cullulleraine Music Festival! They killed it at last year’s Festival so it’ll be more of the same this year.

JAUNTYBELLEJauntybelle” is the shared collective of Jesse Curran and Chris Rogers who have enjoyed singing and playing music together for many years. In the current incarnation it includes the vocal talents and violin skills of Melissa Tucker which allows a blend of strong vocal harmonies with some diverse instrumental skills to breath life to songs old and new.

MONIQUE CLARERenegade folk cellist and singer-songwriter Monique Clare burst onto the scene in 2017, launching her debut EP as Folk Alliance Artist of the Year. She weaves earthy cello and powerful vocals in a performance that dances between darkness and light. Her diverse career has taken her as far as Afghanistan as a performer and educator, and the USA on a grant-funded exploration into folk traditions. “Monique brings courage and a zeal for life together in her music – she’s a joy to hear”.

TAMARISQUE

A fantastic line up for a great festival in celebration of many genres of music.

MONTGOMERY CHURCHMontgomery Church treat audiences to a spacious and sensitive acoustic representation of original folk /Americana music consisting of spellbinding dobro, soaring vocals and stunning harmonies. Their sparse, approach might remind listeners of great folk and Americana duos such as Gillian Welch and David Rawlings or a Union Station stripped down to Allison Krauss and Jerry Douglas. The songwriting shows tinges of Patty Griffin, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids) , and Tim O’Brien; but most of all, their combination is at all times enthralling in its dynamic intimacy.

OVERWOUNDMildura based Hard Rock/Blues Trio Overwound are joining the Cullulleraine Music Festival for the first time, they are the 2016 Regional Battle of the Bands Winners. They create a Rock/Blues and Funk-Rock style that displays various elements of the trio’s individual genres. Playing mostly local gigs around Mildura which consist of Pubs, festivals, and also fundraisers, they enjoy performing every chance they get allowing them to share their music with new audiences.

PAUL WOOKEY & PHILOMENA CARROLLPaul has spent most of his life on the road, playing Bluegrass, Blues, Folk, Country and originals. His influences range from Doc Watson to Eric Clapton, Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan and way more. He is renowned for his flat-picking guitar style and a voice that could sing the birds from the trees. Paul is accompanied by Philomena on guitar, banjo and voice. GIT and Rank Strangers are among her former bands and she has a long history in the Bluegrass scene in Australia. Together they perform a mostly traditional repertoire of songs and tunes, delivered with great reverence for the musical history of a bygone era.

RACHEL SLATTERRachel will be returning home to enjoy a weekend of music with family and friends. Performing a mixture of covers and originals with an acoustic /folky twist, there are bound to be some smooth tunes that you can sing along to.

SOEBARDI SIX STRING SURFERSThe Soebardi Six String Surfers is a local guitar ensemble led by local man Iwan Soebardi and is made up of secondary school students.

SUNNY STREET SINGERSThe Sunny Street Singers are an All Abilities choir of women formed in 2005. The choir perform regularly in the community at events such as Walk Wentworth Sing, Ageing Carers Conference and the Mildura Eisteddfod. They have performed out of the region with the Tutti Choir in Adelaide and the Choir of Hope and Inspiration. The Sunny Street Singers energetically perform original songs expressing values and interests that are meaningful to them as individuals. The choir are very excited about performing again at the Cullulleraine Music Festival.

SUNRAYSIA COMMUNITY CHOIR A group of talented locals who get together each week to sing, they’ve participated in many community events - most recently as the backing choir for the Victorian Opera’s production of ‘The Pied Piper’ as well as performing at many other events and celebrations. The choir leader Mavis Francis and pianist Meg Sullivan are the heart of the choir, and the 60 or more members are the soul. They are from all walks of life, and all different singing genres, but what they all have in common is that they love to sing.

TAMARISQUEReturning to the festival for their 4th year, the family band Tamarisque has been delighting audiences across Australia for over 20 years with performances that demonstrate their unique blend of virtuosity and heart. Bringing together music from one end of the spectrum to the other, Tamarisque creates a space on stage where folk melodies rub shoulders with gypsy jazz, sprightly fiddling spirals down to smoky ballads, and the players are invariably having at least as much fun as the audience.

TONY SMITHA full blooded representative of the Australian country way of life Tony Smith was born and raised on the lower Darling Murray basin region at Balcatherine Station near Wentworth. Tony lived and breathed the land through the good times and bad as any farmer does. From droughts, floods, fires, epic lake bed wheat crops, booming wool and sheep prices; and back again to shooting stock and wondering how the hell any sane person would try to make a living off the land! Tony’s life experiences are recorded in his songs, with tunes such as Shearer, recorded by James Blundell and Little Desert, which charted at 30 in the HOT COUNTRY 100 a few years ago now.

JAUNTYBELLE JOHN O’SHAUGHNESSY WILLIAM ALEXANDER

TWO IF BY SEABoth beginning their musical adventures on the cello as children, Rachel Johnston and Trent Arkleysmith then took different paths that led Rachel to the world stage of classical music and found Trent on the street- fortunately as an award-winning Street Arts performer and musician in the international circus scene. Two If By Sea gathers together some favourite melodic souvenirs from their musical and geographical travels, drawing on the rich folk music traditions of Scandinavia, Bluegrass, Klezmer and the Celts to present a collection of harmonies that have already delighted audiences around Australia and across the seas.

WILLIAM ALEXANDERHe’s been called many things in his short but full life, including titles such as the ‘Gentleman of the Bush’ , ‘The kid from Bourke’, ‘Young William’ and most likely a few profanities. William is most at home when close to a river and surrounded by the plants and animals that bring life to this country. Like many musicians, music is a way that William can communicate his experience of life in song, though he often finds the words of others to be valuable for telling stories of love gone wrong, living on the road, and working in the sun. So for William, folk songs are the perfect coupling of his twin loves of history and story-telling song.
