The Immigrants of Distinction Awards acknowledge the inspirational efforts of immigrants and refugees who have contributed so greatly to the Calgary community. As Canadians, we recognize that our diverse communities play an important role in shaping our country’s future, and represent open avenues of friendship and cooperation both within Canada and with other parts of the world.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI

On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Calgary, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 Immigrants of Distinction Awards Gala.

Each year, these awards allow us the opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions that immigrants and refugees have made to Calgary. These nominees have worked tirelessly to make our community even greater. For Canada’s 150th birthday, it is my hope that every Canadian will adopt this same spirit of giving that the award recipients have shown.

I am asking Canadians to do 3 Things for Canada – three acts of service, big or small that, together, will have a tremendous impact on our community. So, as community leaders, I am asking for your help in sharing this dream. Continue to do the amazing work you do to make our community great, and encourage those around you to do the same.

We are honoured that you have joined us in celebrating the diversity of talents and skills immigrants and refugees contribute to our great multicultural city. This year’s Awards will also serve to celebrate two momentous anniversaries: Immigrant Services Calgary’s 40th anniversary of providing comprehensive settlement services to Calgary’s newcomers, and Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

This year’s theme: “Global Talent – Canada’s Advantage” celebrates the outstanding contributions that immigrants and refugees make to the Calgary community, and showcases how the talents of newcomers from around the globe continually enrich our city and country.

Immigrants of Distinction Award recipients have enhanced our society through their dedication, commitment and excellence in the areas of arts and culture, business, community service and professional achievements. The awards also highlight the accomplishments of talented immigrant youth through the presentation of youth scholarships and recognize companies for their diversity initiatives.

Let’s celebrate diversity and inclusion which are at the heart of Canada’s values and deeply rooted in our history and how they inspire creativity and innovation for Canada’s global advantage. Jodi Hughes, Global News

Jodi Hughes is the Weather Anchor for Global News Calgary’s Weekend News Hour at 6 p.m. and Weekend News Final at 11 p.m. When not reporting the weather, you can find Jodi out in the community on Friday nights reporting for Early News and News Hour.

A third-generation Calgarian, Jodi joins Global after having spent almost 12 years working in radio at CJAY 92 in 2002, then Classic Country AM 1060 from 2011 to 2013.

Jodi made the move to broadcast seven years ago when she began reporting the weather for CBC in 2010. Her experience and love for weather comes from her father, former long-time Global Calgary Weatherman Jimmy Hughes from 1980 to 2004, whom she fondly remembers watching from the back of the same Global studio she is delighted to work in today.

Doug Dirks, CBC Calgary

You can’t turn on the radio or television in Calgary without hearing from Doug Dirks. A 20-year veteran with CBC Calgary, Doug has hosted the Homestretch on radio, the local TV news, and shows on CBC News Network.

A big sports fan, Doug has also worked as a sports commentator, covering everything from Stanley Cup matches to Olympic showdowns.

Doug is no stranger to the academic world. He’s studied at McGill University, Mount Royal University, and Humber College. He is married to a mental health professional, which comes in handy because he’s the father of two teenagers and continues to struggle with his golf game.

Achievement Under 35 AwardThis award is presented to an immigrant under 35 years of age who has had remarkable success and made significant achievements in their chosen career path in a relatively short period of time. Overcoming significant obstacles, he or she has demonstrated perseverance and dedication.

Arts and Culture AwardThis award is presented to an immigrant who has achieved success in an artistic endeavour within the visual, media, or performing arts fields.

Community Service AwardThis award is presented to an immigrant who has provided outstanding community service to the city of Calgary and immigrant communities in a volunteer capacity.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Award This award is presented to an immigrant who has achieved success in the creation or operation of a business or entrepreneurial endeavor or has applied innovation resulting in business success in Calgary or surrounding areas.

Lifetime Achievement AwardThis award is presented to an immigrant who has achieved outstanding success in his or her chosen career path, professional field, or in the area of immigrant services. This individual will have made significant contributions to our city in the areas of professional achievement, community building, and philanthropic endeavors.

Organizational Diversity AwardThis award is presented to a business, government body, non-profit organization, or media outlet leading the field in implementing diversity initiatives in the workplace. The winning company will be a shining example of true labour market integration and will have made significant contributions in serving ethnically diverse client groups.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math AwardThis award is presented to an immigrant who has achieved success in or made outstanding contributions to promote science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) in Calgary.

Youth Scholarship AwardsYouth Scholarships are awarded to immigrant youths between the ages of 14 and 24 who have made an outstanding contribution or significant achievement in one or more of the following areas: arts & culture, sports, community & volunteer activities, academics, and leadership.

Achievemnet Under 35

Dr. Das is a Bangladeshi professor with a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba and currently teaches in the Department of Economics, Justice and Policy Studies at Mount Royal University. He is a very valuable faculty member and has been nominated for the Mount Royal Faculty Association Outstanding Teacher Award and is the recipient of the Innovation Fund award in 2014-2015. Also noteworthy is that his rankings in student evaluations are the highest in the faculty.

Dr. Anupam Das

Throughout his career, Dr. Das has had a great impact in several university committees. He has also been an active speaker and has participated in international conferences and lectures. One of his most prestigious invitations has been by the Chief Economist at the Bangladesh Central Bank, who has requested Dr. Das twice to advise him on exchange rate policies. Dr. Das is passionate about making a difference in society not only through his academic career but also as a volunteer in the Bangladeshi community by organizing social and cultural events.

Achievemnet Under 35

Dr. Gohel immigrated to Canada from London, England and has a MBBS with distinction in Medical and Clinical Sciences. She also possesses a certificate in the Care of the Elderly and is registered with the Medical Council of Canada. She currently practices at the South Health Campus.

Dr.Gohel has dedicated her career to her passion for improving seniors care. She has been able to accomplish this goal by developing a medical model that customizes care to meet the unique individual needs of elderly patients. During her time in India, she volunteered to train local doctors and to treat patients free of charge. Dr.Gohel’s commitment to a respective approach of seniors care has proven that she is willing to go above and beyond for her patients. She is a true humanitarian with a strong spirit of service and a kind heart.

Dr. Diana Nada

Dr. Nada is an Egyptian Civil Engineer with a Doctoral Degree in Project Management from the University of Calgary and is a role model due to her philanthropic efforts.

She is active in community service, arts and culture and is also a board member of the Calgary Arab Arts and Culture Society.

Dr. Nada has inspired both the Egyptian and Arab communities through her efforts in establishing the Calgary Egyptian Association.

Dr. Nada is also known for her work in connecting different communities and has an established reputation for her work as a speaker and an author with numerous published articles around the world.

Arts and Culture

Elena Bushan is a talented and passionate visual artist from Moldova. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and is the founder of the Marda Loop Art Studio portrait group with 230 members in Calgary. Her love for art began during her youth, when she found a way to escape the hardships of war through art.

Elena is highly respected for her contributions to the art world. Her work as an artist and a private Art Instructor have been featured in shows in Canada and Europe.

Elena has dedicated her life to give back to the community through donating her art work to hospitals, schools and churches, and by volunteering to teach art to children.

Sylvia Prochownik

Sylvia Prochownik is an outstanding leader from Poland with a degree in Communication and Culture (Art History) from the University of Calgary. Sylvia is a local and also internationally emerging artist and has been recognized for her work by Alberta Health Services and the HOPE organ donation program. She has dedicated over 20 years of her life to Arts and Culture through her work on murals, backdrops, art shows and exhibitions.

Her other accomplishments include being commissioned by The City of Calgary Utilities Program and The Ranch Restoration Society. Sylvia was also invited to Art Monaco in 2016. Sylvia is admired for her skills, knowledge and caring personality. She is an active volunteer who participates in several community projects and has donated many of her paintings to charitable organizations to help those in need. Her enthusiasm and willingness to help make her a valuable community member.

Arts and Culture

Janey Luc-German immigrated to Canada from Vietnam in 1982. She enrolled in school with little English but was able to overcome language barriers and successfully graduate from High School.

An art lover, Janey has a long list of contributions. She began her work by becoming a Workshop Committee volunteer and later became an art instructor in community centers.

Thien (Janey) Luc-German

Janey joined the Calgary Sketch Club in 2003 and has twice been the recipient of the Roland Gissing Trophy. She has participated in numerous art groups, several exhibitions and festivals. She is also a founding member of ArtsCan Cooperative for Artists.

Her growth is the result of her hard work and her passion for art. Janey’s goal is to help others to excel in the arts by volunteering to teach her skills to the community.

Community Service

Dahlia ElShafie-Mostafa immigrated to Canada from Egypt in 2005. She is a Ph.D. Fellow in Leadership, Policy, and Change with an area of focus in Counselling Psychology. Dahlia is the President & CEO of CLICK Coaching & Counselling Inc. She works hand in hand with husbands, wives, and children using a coaching and counselling approach that is tailored to their needs, backgrounds, cultures, morals and ethics to revive their relationships while improving their well-being, balance, and development.

Dahlia has begun the first Arabic Radio Show in Canada that addresses cultural values, diversity, psychological problems and mental health issues of immigrants. She is dedicated to help immigrants and refugees to settle and integrate in Canada.

Community ServiceMiguel Ángel Cortines

Miguel Cortines is a successful and talented international businessman from Mexico City. Miguel’s strong professional background in government positions, corporate and community relations, event management and strategic planning along with his MBA and Accounting degrees have enabled him to successfully run The Canadian Council for the Americas in Calgary.

During his time at the Council, he has been able to promote investment linkages between Albertan companies and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Miguel’s passionate and devoted personality is shown through his commitment to the betterment of the community. For more than 12 years, he has worked as a volunteer in events which promote trade and culture. His hard work has helped Albertans, especially immigrants, by connecting them to great networking opportunities. He is a reliable individual with a great spirit who loves contributing to the success of his community.

Miroslav ReljicEscaping a civil war from Croatia, Miroslav Reljic came to Canada at the age of 22 with little English. He is a great example of dedication and hard work. With a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Calgary, and a Leadership and Career Coach Certification from the University of Cambridge, Miroslav is the CEO/Founder of Professional Leadership & Career Coach. His impressive portfolio includes working with top Canadian companies such as TransCanada Pipelines.

Miroslav has always been passionate about giving back to the community through his volunteer work and focusing his efforts on helping others achieve their dreams. He has worked on many projects providing guidance to immigrants, using his own experience to teach them how to succeed in a new country. In addition to his work with the immigrant community, Mirsolav has also founded a tree-planting project in a public park. Miroslav has a friendly and enthusiastic personality and is very passionate about contributing to his community.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Dr. Kapoor is a respected Cardiologist who immigrated to Canada in 1999 from India. Since then, he has been successful at creating and leading multiple philanthropic initiatives. He works as a Cardiologist and Medical Director at Advanced Cardiology Consultants and Diagnostics in Calgary. Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Naomi Pereira is a creative entrepreneur from Venezuela. In 2007, at the age of 24 she started her own business: PEDINI, a recognized European Kitchen showroom and design studio. Naomi is known for her leadership, creativity and problem solving skills. In 2015, she decided to give back to the community by co-founding a second business called JobJar, in order to connect unemployed Calgary energy workers with homeowners needing repairs.

A successful professional, passionate volunteer, admirable human, dedicated husband and dad, Wilson Wong provides inspiration and leadership to creative projects. Originally from Hong Kong, Wilson is an experienced Creative/Art Director with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications from the Alberta College of Art + Design, who volunteers his services to the Theatre Junction Grand and other organizations.

She has also played a role in creating a social enterprise to help immigrants build their own small businesses in the construction industry. In addition to her volunteer work with the immigrant community, she has also dedicated her time to working at the National Kitchen and Bath Association.Naomi is a generous and persevering individual with an entrepreneurial spirit, who has been attentive to her community’s needs.

Wilson Wong

Wilson possesses a great sense of integrity and an interest in helping people in any way possible. As a Partner of Everbrave, a full-service marketing agency in Calgary, he created initiatives including the WORKshift and Global Business Centre for the Calgary Economic Development. He supports Calgary’s arts and culture community, through efforts such as the creation and management of Calgary’s premier movie listing site, calgarymovies.com. He is a role model in the community and an asset to the development of Calgary’s arts and culture scene.

Lifetime Achievement

Dr. Anil Mehrotra was the founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Engineering Research & Education (CEERE) from April 2002 to June 2016. Under his direction, CEERE was established to coordinate the instruction, training and research related to the interdisciplinary field of environmental engineering at the University of Calgary on the local, national and international level. Since 2012, he has been the Director of the interdisciplinary postgraduate program, Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV).

Dr. Anil K. Mehrotra

Dr. Mehrotra has won 15 awards at the University of Calgary for his development as a teacher and his outstanding service in the administrative area. Furthermore, for over 17 years, he has served on the Board of Examiners of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Mehrotra is a well-respected member of the Hindu community.

Dr. Irene EstayDr. Estay was born in Chile and has led a long career as a psychologist, teacher, mentor and inspirational speaker. She is the author of Here I Am: Lessons Learned.

As a teacher and leader in the ethics of clinical counseling, she has set the highest of standards for her students by teaching the importance of professional conduct towards clients, and she has treated them with love, dignity and respect.

Dr. Estay has continuously given back to the community by volunteering, and through empowerment workshops.

As a respected member of the community, Dr. Estay has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Premier’s Award of Excellence in 1996 and the Alberta Quality Award – Excellence Level in 1998.

Lifetime Achievement

Dr. Richard Guy is an Honorary Doctor and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Calgary. He immigrated to Canada from Great Britain in 1965 and has been recognized for his work in number theory, combinational game theory, geometry, graph theory and environmental outcomes. Dr. Guy has published more than 300 documents in mathematical periodicals and is a reliable reference for more than 20 periodicals. He has also written 20 math books, two of which are used in numerous University programs.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, he is an enthusiastic alpine climber and the founder of The Louise and Richard Guy Hut in memory of his late wife. Every year Dr. Guy climbs up the 802 steps of the Calgary Tower as part of the Alberta Wilderness Association’s Climb for Wilderness event. This year, just months before his 100th birthday, Dr. Guy climbed the tower carrying a photo of his wife who had faithfully climbed with him every year until her passing at age 92.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

Dr. Laleh Behjat

Dr. Behjat immigrated to Canada from Iran in 1997. She has led a very successful research program to investigate gender difference in STEM teaching, and learning and design engineering solutions. Throughout her career, Dr. Behjat has won over 15 awards, and has taken part in more than 46 academic projects.

In addition to her work at the University level, Dr. Behjat instructs local children in Grade 5 classrooms. Her interactive modules get kids involved in active learning, and help them improve confidence in STEM subjects. It is Dr. Behjat’s passion to have more diversity in STEM education, and ensure that the opportunities she had are also given to other people in Canada.

Dr. Badawy immigrated to Canada in 1997 from Egypt. He has two doctorate degrees, in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. He has taken part in more than 21 seminars/lectures, supported 57 research publications and has produced more than 334 publications.

Dr. Wael Badawy

Dr. Badawy is an internationally renowned researcher in video surveillance technology. He oversees the development of video surveillance technology at the University of Calgary, where he was an iCore Chair Associate. Dr. Badawy owns 13 patents in North America and has made more than 50 contributions to developing the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

Dr. Elhabiby immigrated to Canada from Egypt in 2004. He is the co-founder of Micro Engineering Tech Inc., and a senior researcher with the Mobile Multi-Sensor Systems Research Group at the University of Calgary. He is a pioneer in the field of satellite imaging, mapping, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

Dr. Mohamed Elhabiby

He has written more than 100 publications including a thesis entitled Wavelet Representation of Geodetic Operators. Dr. Elhabiby won the Applied Technology Award of the 2015 ASTech Awards. In 2015, the City of Calgary enlisted Dr. Elhabiby and his team to develop integrated land surveys and geotechnical systems that can sense movement in structures. He has also been the Director of an Archeological Mission in Egypt since 2009.

Organizational Diversity

The Syrian Refugees Support Group (SRSG) collects donations for Syrian newcomers. SRSG provides members of the community with opportunities to interact with newcomers from the time they arrive at the airport until they are settled in to their new home, and beyond.

Calgary Syrian Refugee Support Group

SRSG is a citizen’s action driven group of community volunteers of various beliefs and backgrounds with the goal of making Calgary a welcoming place for refugees. The group provides practical help to integrate and settle refugees including: airport welcomes, translation services, sponsors, and employer connections. One-on-one social opportunities are also offered through play groups, library visits, recreational outings and coordination of sponsorships for new refugee applicants.

Youth Scholarship

Ayush Ghosh immigrated to Canada from India in 2008. He is a Grade 11 student with tremendous talent in the field of classical music. Ayush is the youngest professional sitar player in the world, and has been internationally recognized for his talents.

Ayush has composed three of his own compositions and has been teaching sitar at The Academy of Indian Classical Music since 2015. He is a global success and Canada’s Ambassador of Culture and Diversity.

Youth Scholarship

Janica Echavez immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in 2012. She is the National VP Operations of the Science Expo Youth Empowerment Group and a Production Assistant in Student Energy at the University of Calgary Schulich School of Engineering. Janica is the founder of the National Science Expo team and has helped more than 500 students across Canada by connecting them to local STEM communities and encouraging them to take part in hands-on learning.

She has also founded a nationwide mentorship program and has helped organize three STEM conferences in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia. Janica has also played a significant role in the team that has developed Canada’s first at-home STI screening kit. Once launched, this new technology will play a critical role in women’s health and in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.

Jeremy Fan

Jermey Fan immigrated to Canada from China in 2003 and is working towards a Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary.

He has a publication in the Cancer Prevention Research Journal that is related to his background in cancer epidemiology research. Currently, he is the first ever first year undergraduate student to win the Fall Markin USRP.

Jeremy is also a dedicated member of Volunteer Churchill. He has invested over 300 logged volunteering hours to establish new partnership agreements with organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Nicole Mfoafo-M’Carthy immigrated to Canada from Ghana in 2001 and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program at the University of Calgary, majoring in Health and Society.Nicole has developed a YYC online resource database for youth for which she was awarded the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award.

Overcoming bullying and racism herself, Nicole created a mentorship program that provides support and guidance to immigrant girls from the ages of 9-13. Nicole applies her leadership skills and academic knowledge to give back to the community, and is an avid local volunteer.

Zeel Patel

Zeel Patel immigrated to Canada from India in 2004. He attended the prestigious MIT Launch program at Harvard University, where he studied youth entrepreneurship. He is currently a researcher at the University of Calgary and is studying the effects of chemical inhibitors on various forms of cancers.

At at the age of 16, Zeel founded his own non-profit organization, Omni Scientific, which aims to connect youth across Calgary to their own research labs in the city. Zeel was ranked internationally and placed #1 in Canada in the International Pascal Mathematics Competition, and has been the recipient of the Best Debater In Alberta award at the Oxford National Debating Championship. Zeel was selected to represent Canada on the international stage in the 2016 World Scholar’s Cup.

Calgary Multicultural Orchestra (CMO)

CMO is a free afterschool music program based on El Sistema program. It is open to all families but is especially focused on new immigrant families, families with high socio-economic need, and at-risk children and youth.

The program not only teaches the joy and discipline of learning a musical instrument, it gives a positive, supervised afterschool activity in which the respect, effort and good use of free time increase their self-esteem, sense of belonging and good habits. It is a thrilling and positively challenging learning environment that has proven results in changing social behavior of young people for the better.

Midnight Taiko Kai (MTK)

MTK is a group of Taiko drummers based in Calgary who love to spread the art of Japanese drumming. The group currently has 17 members and have performed at well over 150 events throughout Calgary and Alberta.

Many of their songs have roots from the traditional Taiko groups on the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan, but their continued inspiration comes from the rich and diverse styles of Taiko ensembles from Japan and throughout the world. Their goal is to share their passion for drumming and perpetuate the art by creating powerful rhythms, heart-stopping beats, and eye-catching performances for their audience and offering workshops throughout the year for anyone who is interested in playing Taiko.

Master Mo Fan & Mo Fan Taichi Wushu Academy

Mo Fan Taichi & Wushu Academy was established by Master Mo Fan, an internationally recognized “Distinguished Wushu Athlete” (the highest martial arts honor). The academy is a learning community where people can find new ways to improve the quality of their lives and become familiar with China’s cultural treasures. The primary focus is on health, well-being, order, balance and harmony.

Master Mo Fan holds over 20 gold medals, and 40 medals in National and International Taichi & Wushu Championships. The academy has sent over 80 students who represent Canada to compete at Asia and US International Championships, and currently have won over 120 medals.
