The invited speaker, Stefano Maffei from Milan, will talk about a topic that is insightful and fundamental for both product

and graphic designers: Design for the Real World.

35 years ago, this topic has been developed for the first

time by Victor Papanek (in his omonimous book). Now,

in a globalized 21st century, it becomes urgent to

explore new perspectives and relevances for designers'

activity, concerning especially the question FOR

WHOM do we try to work - the 5-10% of design

magazine and coffee table book readers, or for the

other 90%?

LA TESI DI PAPANEK

Progettare per il mondo reale significa guardare ai problemi

reali del mondo e tentare di risolverli utilizzando un approccio

ecologico e razionale, che guarda avanti, utilizzando la

competenza degli stakeholder (che sono coloro che sono

affetti dai problemi ma che sono anche interessati alla loro

soluzione).

Questo atteggiamento progettuale è l’opposto della pratica

del design guidato dal profitto che attraverso quella che può

essere definita come una obsolescenza programmata e l’idea

di tendenze della moda continua a vendere le stesse cose

anno dopo anno facendo dello styling una mercificazione

delle differenze estetiche

“…Much recent design has satisfied only evanescent wants and

desires, while the genuine needs of man have often been

neglected by the designer. The economic, psychological,

spiritual, technological, and intellectual needs of a human being

are usually more difficult and less profitable to satisfy than the

carefully engineered and manipulated 'wants' inculcated by fad

and fashion. People seem to prefer the ornate to the plain as

they prefer day-dreaming to thinking and mysticism to

rationalism. As they seek crowd pleasures and choose widely

travelled roads rather than solitude and lonely paths, they seem

to feel a sense of security in crowds and crowdedness. Horror

vacui is horror of inner as well as outer vacuum.

The need for security-through-identity has been perverted into

role-playing…”

learning. The concept can also be related to social

entrepreneurship and it also overlaps with innovation

in public policy and governance…”

is increasingly seen to happen most effectively in the

space between the three sectors. Recent research

CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Ezio pensa che i designer debbano offrire

“…soluzioni per il cambiamento climatico, ridurre

l’impatto dei materiali, ideare strumenti di design per

una società migliore…”. Si pensi al movimento del

green design, a quello dello Slow food, al ruolo dei

designer nei processi di social innovation.

Egli sostiene che, a differenza delle trasformazioni

guidate da scienziati, economisti, realtà del terzo

settore e privati, i designed systems si rivelano più

forti e replicabili.




CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Nell’era dei network, il fenomeno dell’innovazione

sociale è generato dagli attori del cambiamento

coinvolti direttamente nella risoluzione dei problemi. I

designers dovrebbero creare le condizioni affinchè le

collaborazioni e l’agire collettivo risultino possibili ed

efficaci: “…we create the conditions, not the

solution…“.

Nell’economia sociale questo dovrebbe essere il

lavoro principale dei designer, e non relegato ad

attività e momenti di volontariato.




CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Le evidenze non mancano: il Social Innovation Fund

e l’Office of Social Innovation in USA

A questo si aggiunge il riconoscimento ufficiale da

parte della UE nel definire l’innovazione sociale quale

asset strategico per uno sviluppo sostenibile.

E in più l’attenzione dell’accademia, la diffusione dei

principi del co-working e del social business basato

sulla condivisione delle conoscenze e dei processi.

La social innovation parte da piccole sperimentazioni

a livello locale, per poi diffondersi nei territori globali.
