About the courseYou can combine Professional Writingwith one or two other subjects to create areally varied and interesting joint honoursdegree. You'll learn about newspaper andmagazine journalism, scriptwriting for film,

What you’ll coverTV and radio, PR, advertising andmarketing and writing for digital media.

How you’ll learnThis course has a strong practicalelement. You will work on producingjournalistic material for our dedicatedwebsite ‘Derby Sphere’, creating publicityand promotional campaigns and writingfor the web and social media. You willalso get the chance to see how theory isput into practice with study visits tonewspaper and broadcasting offices, thelocal courts and sports grounds. We havea dedicated newsroom, with cross-platform facilities including TV and radiobroadcast studios, and industry standardequipment and software.

Your careerAll employers need good, persuasivecommunicators, so your choice of futurecareer is wide and varied.

Throughout your degree you will bebuilding up a portfolio of writing projectsto a professional level, and increasingyour employability skills. You will beworking individually and in teams, as wellas on individual assignments in which youwill have contact with outsideorganisations. We have excellent linkswith local and national employers,particularly in the creative, cultural andmedia industries.

Some of our Professional Writinggraduates have gone on to work in theadvertising, PR, publishing andbroadcasting industries. Others havegone on to forge careers in retailmanagement, human resources, theArmed Forces, government agencies, theNational Health Service, or in education.

Additional informationAll our writing modules are taught byhighly skilled professionals in their variousfields, such as journalists, scriptwriters,digital media developers and PR andmarketing experts.

The theory modules are taught byacademics, who are researchers and havepublished papers or books in their areasof expertise.

Where you will study: Derby Campus – Kedleston Road site.

Entry requirements: Academic – 220-300 UCAS tariff points, ofwhich at least 200-240 must be from yourInternational Baccalaureate or equivalentqualification.
