PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Presented by Heather Williams and Meg Oswalt GOALS Teachers will be confident in creating lessons that integrate technology. through this series. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the content through the use of technology. Students will use technology to organize and present new knowledge. Teachers will bring creativity to the mediocre classroom setting. Librarians will assist in the use of technology and integration of technology into the teachers lesson plan. MORE LIBRARIAN RESOURCES As we find technology that kids will enjoy using, well share! This is just a taste of the resources available: Check out the librarian Pinterest page https://www.pinterest.com/pickmeg/mlis-tools-for-librarians/ https://www.pinterest.com/pickmeg/mlis-tools-for-librarians/ Read yours, they are full of new and exciting ideas (put in a folder to save for rainy day recess)etailv2&&&id=5A6EE1D660AEC72EF652D93A8106A63EBB5F7 9AC&selectedIndex=0&ccid=I6xvIti8&simid= &thid=HN https://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=AwrTcXhpOhtVxUYA672JzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTIzNzN1NWpnBHNl YwNzcgRzbGsDaW1nBG9pZANlMDJiZGNhNzg0ZmExNjVlZDMyMTRhZDI1MzMzNjIzMARncG9zAzE5BGl0A2Jpbm c- ?.origin=&back=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3D %26fr%3Dsfp%26fr2%3 Dpiv-web%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D19&w=1130&h=1015&imgurl=www.evolve.ie%2Fwp- content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F12%2F .jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.evolve.ie%2F10-inside-sales-tips-for-using--to-win-new-business-part- 1%2F&size=260.8KB&name=10+Inside+Sales+Tips+for+Using+%3Cb%3E %3C%2Fb%3E+to+win+New+Business+ %28Part+1%29&p= &oid=e02bdca784fa165ed3214ad &fr2=piv- web&fr=sfp&tt=10+Inside+Sales+Tips+for+Using+%3Cb%3E %3C%2Fb%3E+to+win+New+Business+%28Part+1%2 9&b=0&ni=21&no=19&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=12lbbkdfp&sigb=12qrl17cq&sigi=11iqkg9od&sigt= s2&sign= s2&.crumb=vbyOFt3OQpx&fr=sfp&fr2=piv-web HOW CAN YOU BE A 21 ST CENTURY TEACHER? Teach differently! Help students be creative! Help students express themselves! Be a risk taker! Help students keep their creations in one place! Be media driven! Collaborate with other teachers! The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The GREAT teacher INSPIRES. William Arthur Ward AASL STANDARDS When librarians are working with you (teachers), we are trying to make sure our standards are meeting yours. We use the AASL Crosswalk with the Common Core. Addressing AASL Crosswalk with the Common Core: 1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. 2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. 3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. 4. Pursue personal and aesthetic growth. 5 TH GRADE HISTORY In 5 th grade, students are focused on American History. A great amount of time is focused on historical figures. When students know about these individuals and their backgrounds, they have a firmer understanding of the historical events that these key people were involved in. Students typically spend an enormous amount of time reading, not a lot of exploring or creating. Great chance for us to get in there and change some things! We would like to change the usual classroom setting through the use of technology. EXAMPLE OF STANDARDS USED IN OUR LESSON TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 5 TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES 5) The student understands important issues, events, and individuals in the United States during the 20 th and 21 st centuries. 24) The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of sources, including electronic technology. 25) The student communicates in written, oral, and visual form. COMMON CORE CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.9 Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. AASL STANDARDS Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize information Use the writing process, media and visual literacy, and technology skills to create products that express new understandings Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess. STUDENT LEARNING GOALS As educators, we know that there are many opportunities to pull in other standards and skills into our lessons. Many overlap, and with minor adjustments to the lessons, more learning can be included everyday. In our example history lesson, we are going to integrate writing, listening, and speaking skills as well. WRITING, LISTENING, & SPEAKING COMMON CORE STANDARDS CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.4 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.2 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.2 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.4 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.5 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.6 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation. BIOGRAPHY ABRAHAM LINCOLN Taking a bit of a shortcut today for the purpose of our presentation To gain some quick background knowledge, we headed over to InstaGrok (to use what we learned in last months tech presentation) For the presentation purpose, utilizing facts from the National Constitution Center for our example F0593E1426B70F7&selectedIndex=0&ccid=wG8LTuw0&simid= &thi d=HN BIOGRAPHY Disclaimer: With students, it is important to NOT just grab info & go We are teaching them to take notes, and organize their information Think back to standard 1, Inquire, Think Critically, Gain Knowledge Students need to pour through the information, take their time, decide what is in or out, and learn through the process In a classroom setting, students should be using multiple resources to gain knowledge about historical figures. Theyll need to summarize and take notes to narrow down the information they want to share in their presentations. ABE LINCOLN FACTS We dont want to use everything! Our example is much less in depth than wed want from our students, but wanted to convey how it works. If our goal is to better understand history, what message are we crafting about this figure? Our students are honing their writing skills as they decide what the real figure would say about himself. They are also putting themselves in Lincolns shoes. BLABBERIZE Blabberize is a fun and easy to use tool. Students can use a picture of a historical figure, and make it appear as if the figure were talking. Itll make the kids smile and theyll enjoy tweaking their creation. BLABBERIZE.COM Step 1: Navigate to the website Step 2: Login/ Signup Step 3: Sign up if you havent already Step 4: After logged in, youll see any previous creations. Now lets MAKE a new one! Step 5: Weve got to find a picture of our subject, Abraham Lincoln! Well need to save it to our files so that we can upload it to Blabberize. Important to choose a picture where the head is larger and the mouth will be easy to see moving. After looking through images online, we chose Wikipedias photo to use. Crop your picture if you need to do so, then click the arrow at the bottom Step 6 The mouth! This is what makes this tool unique. This part can be fun and tricky, well use the points around the circle to fit Lincolns mouth The bottom face buttons either remove the mouth youve just done, or add a new mouth Step 7 Next we have to select how we will record our sound We can record on the device we are using We can upload a previous recording We can use our phones Step 7 Now we record! This can take a few tries to get right. Great speaking practice for kids, we want to encourage them to use their best take Feel free to use an accent, we may have made Lincoln sound a little more southern than he probably was! After hitting the arrow in the right hand corner, you can make another scene, edit, or SAVE. Lets save! Input a title, description, and tags, then SAVE Its ready to share! We can embed it on our library site, or just share the link to watch it now:ew/id/ OTHER USES Students can bring a character to life Students can Blabberize themselves as an introduction They can also use themselves to read a piece of the their writing OTHER AREAS TO EXPLORE Voki is also fun character animation, look into that! Tellagami is animating an avatar in front of a picture, so students can set the scene https://tellagami.com/ https://tellagami.com/ EVALUATION Please take a few minutes to fill out the evaluation. Well collect some ideas for using this technology that we will share with you!
