Processing techniques of fin rays from the whale shark,
Whale shark was discarded as a waste by the fishermen after removing the liver. Now with the development of the method for extraction of fin rays it fetches more than Rs. 2000/- per
kilo. It is estimated that on an average one Whale shark is now fetching about Rs. 100,000/-.
(Ramachandran, A & Sankar, T.V. 1990, Fins and Fin rays from Whale Shark, Fishery Technol, 27, 2, 138 –140,)
1990
Development of processed scales for ornamental purpose from fish processing waste and published in Infofish
This technology has wide application for producing various ornamental and decorative items from fish waste (shell)
Ramachandran, A & Nair P.G.V. 1989, Processing of fish scales for ornamental use, infofish international, 5/89, FAO, Malaysia.
1989

Improved processing techniques for the production of semi-dried fish products.
The research paper on this technology was presented in the First Indian Fisheries Forum of Asian Fisheries Society (Indian Branch) and secured BEST PAPER AWARD. The method will help to retain its natural characteristics of the fish with good consumer appeal and at the same time can store at room temperature
1988
Layout of Processing Plants and Quality Assurance Laboratory for seafood plants.
Several Quality Control Laboratories were established based on the model lay out proposed in Veraval Region, Gujarat(Ramachandran,A. 1995. Multidisciplinary approach for facilities designand layout for quality control laboratory in seafood processing industry,in Hameed,M.S. & Kurup,B.M (eds.) Technological Advancements in Fisheries, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin, pp. 400-403.)
1995
Priority rules for processing different products in the same production line
This Priority Rule if followed in seafood industry will help to ovoid processing loss and spoilage in seafood plants
Number of Seafood processing companies are now adopting this method
(Ramachandran, A. 1994, Simple priority rule for processing in seafood processing plants, Seafood Export Jl., XXV (19), 1 – 6.)
1994
Work Measurement of the process of H L Shrimp
This is to eliminate the unwanted handling and unwanted activities during the entire production process to reduce the Production Cycle Time to improve the quality of the product
(Ramachandran, A. 1990, Work measurement for the production of frozen headless shell-on shrimp in seafood processing plants in Kerala, in.Proceedings. Second Science Congress, (Balakrishnan Nair, Ed.), State committee on Science , Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala, Trivandrum, 188 – 189.)
1990
Sea urchin is an important unutilised resources The process proposed is to extract the sea urchin roe from export
Sea urchin roe is a high value product of great demand in Japan and other South Eastern Countries. The judicious utilisation and production of sea urchin available in the East and West coast would help in additional employment generation and foreign exchange(Ramachandran, A.1991, Sea urchins and its utilisation with special emphasis on Japan, Infofish international, (FAO), Malaysia, 5/91, 20 – 22)
1991

Standardized peeling process for shrimp
Peeling of prawns for the production of PUD Shrimp and PD shrimp is a vital process which decides on the quality of the final frozen product or canned product. Lack of standardized process of peeling –both Manuel and machine – results in loss of water soluble proteins, other nutrients and the texture of the products. This standardized process proposed would help to retain not only physical and chemical quality but yield of the product.
(Ramachandran,A. & Hameed,M.S. 1997. A comparative study between machine peeled and hand peeled shrimp, in James, D.G. (ed.) Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission, FAO Fisheries Report No.563,Rome, Italy, pp. 321-327)
1997
Development of process control Software
A process control soft ware is developed under the project on Development of Total Quality Management System funded by ICAR. This soft ware helps to tract the deviation taking place in the process of prawns in the factory and helps to make immediate remedial action. This will help improve the yield of production and avoid unnecessary loss of high value products. The soft ware is also forwarded to ICAR.
2006
Development of Chart for identification of Fishes under ASEAN Comprehensive Trade Agreement
A comprehensive chart of fish species listed under the Negative List of the India-Asean Free Trade Agreement with details such as photographs of fishes, harmonized code, species name, common trade and local names, description of the species and significance of inclusion under the Negative List has been brought out by Prof Ramachandran, School of Industrial Fisheries of Cochin University of Science and Technology, for the benefit of the fishermen and trade.
The chart was released by the Union Minister of State for Agriculture at a function held in Ernakulam.
The list also contains several dominant fishes not native to the Indian subcontinent as a measure to prevent such fishes and products from competing with Indian fishes in the local markets.
Free market Indian exporters will get a wider tariff free market to create a single free-trade area for the region encompassing 500 million people.

3. A project involving three international institutions/Universities in the Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, Larenstien University) and Cochin University was completed for developing Visual Problem Appraisal Technique to be used for post graduate teaching. 25 DVDs / Videos were produced with the assistance of professional film shooting and editing facilities and staff. This project involved the support of fisheries experts, agriculture experts, fishing technologists, social workers, film producing crew, script writers, editors, management experts and so on.
4. A research project on the Impact of the CRZ and PPP on the coastal population was completed with the support of Delft University, Department of Physical Oceanography, School of Industrial Fisheries, Dept of Fisheries, Social workers, Public men in various panchayats, Kudumbasree workers, etc
A software is developed for process control in the seafood industry
Visual problem appraisal kit with various videos on coastal activities, teaching literature, demonstration book, etc were produced for the use at post graduate levels in three Universities- Delft University of Technology, Lowenstein University and Cochin UniversityThis helps the students to visualize the various problems and opportunities in the coastal zone of Kerala without visiting the actual locations.
The synergy of the CRZ regulations and Peoples Planning Programme is very important for the sustainable use of various natural resources including fisheries and agriculture. The delimitations of CRZ in certain villages in Kerala pose conflicts with the development proposals of the local panchayats.
The developmental activities of the coastal panchayats should be in agreement with the various provisions of the CRZ notifications

Under this project potential indigenous ornamental fishery resources in different rivers and other water bodies in Kerala were documented and its availability assessed as per Cites Rule for developing an export trade from India. This information is being used by exporters and well as other ornamental fish traders. This is expected to generate additional employment opportunity to the tune of 25000 at different levels like ornamental fish collectors in remote villagers, conditioners, transporting firms, wholesalers, retailers, exporters, etc. It is also expected to develop a new export trade in the country especially in the state of Kerala using these neglected resources with 5 billion dollar business world over. This has also helped in showing the people that small fish which is otherwise destroyed by illegal methods like dynamiting; electrocution and poisoning when edible fishes are caught are more valuable and fetch income to them if adequately protected.

“New genus and species of danionine fish described
Copyright © Beta Mahatvaraj
Scientists from Sweden and India have described a new genus and species of danionine fish.
Betadevario ramachandrani was collected from the upper Sita River drainage in southwestern India, where it was found in a high altitude stream with a cascade and riffle pool-type habitat.
The water temperature was 19°C and pH 6.4 at the time of collection.
The new genus is named after the Greek letter beta, denoting two (and used in the meaning of second), and also honouring Beta Mahatvaraj, who helped make the material available for study.
The specific name honours Professor Alappat Ramachandran.
The discovery of the new species (as a new species of Danio) was reported two years ago in a news article here on the Practical Fishkeeping website.
