    INTRODUCTION

    Light Theory

    What is lighting?

    - Functions of Lighting Design: Illumination, Revelation of form, Focus, Mood, Location and time of day,

    Projection/stage elements, Plot, Composition.

Use lighting to affect the audience's senses and evoke their emotions. What do we provide through ProTech?

    - Lighting for productions of various scale including concerts, lectures, dances, theatrical performances, cultural shows, and conferences. Specifically, orientation,

YPulse, Girl Talk, BUC events, and After-parties. We service everyone from student

groups, university departments, the dean, and even outside companies and organizations.

    Fixtures

    - Source-4 Ellipsoidal: An ellipsoidal reflector spotlight; ERS is named for theellipsoidal reflector used to collect & direct the light through a barrel that contains

an lens. Source-4 is the most widely used Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight amongprofessional theaters in the United States. ERS are characterized by tool-free lamp

adjustment, and a rotating, interchangeable shutter barrel. Lenses come in

different degrees which indicate the field angel of the beam that lens will produce.

A lens tube with a smaller field angle will light an area from far away,

whereas a large beam degree such as a 90 degree can be much closer inorder to light the same area. Our fixtures are 545 watts, with the exception of the5 which is 750.

    - Altman 6x22 Ellipsoidal: Also a rugged ERS which produces a high intensitysharp or soft edged beam. Wattage is 545 and it is has 11 degree lens (long

    throw).

    - Par (64 and 54): PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector. It is a selfcontained, sealed-beam lamp which includes a parabolic reflector, a filament, and

a lens. Par64 is1000 watt and Par56 is 500 watt. These rugged and efficientlamps, which gained popularity in the concert field, are typically used for strong

washes of down and back light. The pool of light is determined by the lamp type.

    - Par 38 and "Twinks": These are 120 watts. Both contain Par38 lamps just indifferent cans.

    - Fresnel: A type of instrument, which produces an even, soft-edged pool of lightthrough a Fresnel lens. The lens is a series of stepped concentric circles on the

front and pebbled on the back and is named after its French inventor, Augustin

    Jean Fresnel.

    - Strip Light: A striplight lighting fixture is a long row of small lights. The unit canthen be wired into several different circuits, allowing each bank of colored lights

to be controlled by a separate dimmer on the lighting board. Striplights are often

used to color a cyclorama. Ours are 3 channel and 15 celled.

    - Follow Spot: Is a light controlled by a human spotlight operator to "follow"actors. Characterized by a strong light source, A lens which can be manuallyfocused, manual control of the intensity of the beam, an iris, and a color

    magazine.Rigging

    - L-16: Max weight = 500lbs, Double Frame (8/12/16 Light Positions)- ST-25: Lifts 800 lb to 19 ft or 650 lb 24 ft. Fork extension also used.- Box Truss:- Clamps and Safety Cables: Always use them. C-clamp, or pipe clamp, is used to

attach a larger piece of hardware, such as a lighting instrument, a speaker, or a

dimmer, to a pipe or batten.

    - Gaffer's (Gaff) Tape: strong, cotton cloth pressure sensitive tape. The adhesiveused is a high quality synthetic rubber, which leaves little or no residue when

    removed.

Cables- DMX: All the information from the desk is transmitted along a single pair of

cables to the dimmer where a de-multiplexing unit (demux box) decodes the

string of data and passes the correct piece of information to the correct dimmer.

The industry standard protocol (language/standard) for multiplexing is the digital

USITT DMX512serial form of communication with dimmers. A communicationsprotocol that is most commonly used to control stage lighting and effects. The

primary method for linking not only controllers and dimmers, but also more

advanced fixtures and special effects devices such as fog machines and moving

    lights

    - Stagepin: standard cable type for theatrical lighting. Stage pin connectors aregenerally used for conducting dimmed power from a dimmer to stage lightinginstruments

    - Socapex: A multipin connector which can carry a series of lighting or soundcircuits. Very robust and designed for touring. Available in 19 and 37 pin

configurations. 19-pin electrical connectors used in stage lighting to terminate the

ends of a multicable. They are wired with six hot pins, six neutral pins, and sixgrounded pins, the final pin being a center pin used to help the male end of the

connector align properly with a female receptacle. Whlie "Socapex" is a brand

name owned by Amphenol-Socapex, the term is often applied to similar off-brand

    connectors.

    - Break-ins and Break-outs: Break-ins are male (break into the dimmer) and break-outs are female (go out to the fixtures)

    - Twofers: used to connect two devices to a single source- Adapters: to connect an Edison-equipped device to a stage-pin sourceControls

    - Dimmers: These devices used to vary the brightness of a light. By decreasing orincreasing the RMS voltage and hence the mean power to the lamp it is possibleto vary the intensity of the light output.

Applied Electronics Dimmers: Analog dimmer (patched by binary),
