ARTIST STATEMENTA bench or a chair is an inanimate object that forces interaction among strangers. As one person approaches a park bench that is occupied by another individual, how does the situation resolve itself? Facilitating circumstances that blur the boundaries between public and private, this body of work is intended to make one aware of the bizarre factors that determine our behaviors in a group setting.

ARTIST STATEMENTThe search for pure form is a passion for me. By that, I mean the distillation of discovered form into it’s minimal essence --- what can and cannot be taken away without destroying the integrity of the form. I have sought to carry this philosophy, developed in my earlier career as a sculptor, over into furniture making. Sculptural presence, although important, must not override the functional requirements of the piece.

ARTIST STATEMENTInfluenced most by architectural studies, Martin’s sculptures, in the words on one admirer, are “works of elegant design and craftsmanship”. Made with several pieces of glass precisely cut from blocks of crystal, the glass is constructed in architectural forms after selected surfaces have been sand-blasted.

The sculptures are multi-dimensional, some surfaces clear, some opaque. The results are “monuments to light”.

ARTIST STATEMENTIn my work, I am attempting to capture the essence of human movement (gesture) through minimal, abstract forms. While always interested in the human figure, I was inspired by a summer trip to Italy where I studied and sketched sculptures of the High Renaissance and Baroque period. I was particularly moved by the sculptures of Giambologna and Bernini. I was drawn to the tension created by their sculptural groups and the curves of the human figure.

The Macassar Collection - LOTUS BENCH Bent Macassar Ebony ends enclose the natural flowing arched base. The seat is upholstered in leather. Different colored leathers are available.
