Alice Driver Production Music Video Editing: This was the first edit of the music video. In this video we didn’t have enough footage for the narrative to become clear to the viewer. This edit was created on iMovie, so therefore lacked features that we could use on FinalCut. This video lacked a clear narrative and was confusing for the viewers to understand what was happening throughout the song. I left all of the transitions to be added last minute in the final cut because it would bring the music video all together.

Music Video Editing:

This was the first edit of the music video. In this video we didn’t have enough footage for the narrative to become clear to the viewer. This edit was created on iMovie, so therefore lacked features that we could use on FinalCut.This video lacked a clear narrative and was confusing for the viewers to understand what was happening throughout the song. I left all of the transitions to be added last minute in the final cut because it would bring the music video all together.

The next edit I made was the run through of just of the performance side of the band. This was benefitional as it would be easier to drag the clips of the narrative “ontop” of the performance edit. Using this method made it easier to edit because I could move the clips wherever without “cutting” them (which was the case with iMovie) The only problem there was with this edit is that the clips had to be exactly in sync with the music.

In this edit, I began to place more of the narrative onto the base of the performance. However from our feedback, the majority of the audience said that the narrative was not clear enough. I overcame this from placing the narrative clips into different places. This slightly made a difference, but we needed to film more clips for the narrative to show more clear. Another problem that we found in this was the beginning footage of the narrative- the part with the transition of the eye. The problem was that the eye was not in complete focus. This was important because it shows the transition of the dream beginning.

in this second draft, the changes we had in music video edit, was the precision of each clip.

Firstly, we sped up the reverse speed of the dates that they had. We found that it went on too long and we wanted it quick and speedy as it was meant to be. This technique was inspired by the band Alt J in their video “Breezeblocks”, the whole of the video is reversed backwards in slow motion. This gives a clever effect of a different narrative shown- to show that the whole experience of the girl was a dream and untrue.

The only problem we had was that we didn’t think the narrative was still not clear from the feedback from the target audience questionnaire. We overcame this problem by going out a shooting more clips of the couple in the together.

In this third edit, I added more of the clips from the third time filming of the couple on a different date. This made it a lot cleaer to the viewers that the relationship between them was realistic to the audience. Also in this edit I started to add the transitions, which made the music video, look smoother from the transition of each clip. In the reverse clips, I changed the opacity so it would show a variety of the band playing, and the previous clips of the girl and boy. In my research of indie bands, I’ve seen this being done within the editing, and so I think it fits well as a transition and prevents the video to be repetitive and boring for the audience.

One problem we got from the feedback from the viewers was in the performance video; the singer was chewing gum whilst singing. We managed to cover this by adding the narrative clips over the parts where this is visible and obviously seen by the audience. One shot that we couldn’t get rid of the chewing. I really liked the lighting in this shot and so I didn’t want to get rid of it. However it is not a dramatic change.

In the final edit, we looked at the video as a group and picked out small things to change to make it 100% accurate. We added a title at the beginning that links to digipak and poster, as it was a similar font.

Overall, I‘m happy with how the editing turned out. Our aim was to create a narrative and performance based music video, and I think we have achieved this. Due to feedback and comments this has allowed us to create an understanding narrative for this viewer to watch. Which again links to the lyrics well. I think the performance side of the music video has worked well too. The main reason for this is that it syncs in time together creating a well-fitted and professional music video.

Lyrics MatchAs a result of including a narrative to the storyline in our music video production, I needed to match the video as much as possible to the lyrics. As I am the editor, I had to pick out specific images to use that would match the lyrics. This was inspired by the theorist Carlson and Goodwin, as they both say its crucial to have these elements otherwise it will not match.

“Behind those eyes”This shot is at the beginning of video. This is an important shot because it’s the first image where the lyric matches the video.

“What I’d do to be with you” This is another repeated lyric which is another resemblance of the couple together linking back to the lyrics.

This is a screenshot of the footsteps at the start of the video. 0.01-0.12 seconds, I put this image of the footsteps in accurate timing that would match the beat in time of the music.

“What I’d do to be with you” This is a transparent shot of the boy and girl together in the distance. This represents the lyrics because it’s an appearance of them two together referring back to this line.

“So I’ll leave, turn the other page”This shot is at the end of the video. Where we see the boy converting to reality. We see the girl moving on from the boy- referring back to the lyrics

“Beauty’s a concept” This shot resembles and refers back to the lyric “Beauty” as the boy in this describes her as Beauty.

“Hope it goes away”This is a shot of the boy leaving the girl. This link to the lyrics “hope it goes away” as to say that his love for the girl will go away, just like his dream in this.
