Lafarge plasterboards are high-qualitygypsum wallboards suitable for theconstruction of metal and timber studpartitions as well as ceilings, direct bondand structural steel framing. They consistof a gypsum plaster core bondedbetween two strong liner papers.

The purity of the gypsum corecontributes to the performance of theplasterboards, such as high strength, light weight, rigidity and workability.

The standard wallboards thus performwell over a range of environmentalconditions. Excellent handlingcharacteristics also ease installation on-site, reducing the number of damagedboards and wastage.

The high strength, quality liner papersare manufactured from recycled wastepaper and coloured to aid identification.

Adjusting the core composition of thesewallboards produces a range of

Performance Boards that retain all the benefits of the Standard wallboardsbut with enhanced qualities designed to meet the performance requirements of specific applications.

This section provides an insight into the extra performance achieved throughthe substitution of Standard wallboardwith Lafarge Performance Boards.

Fixing to Lafarge wallboards

Drywall constructions canaccommodate most fixturesproviding the appropriate fixings or fixing provisions are used.

Where the locations of fixtures areknown before the construction iscommenced, fixing provisions can be designed and installed into theconstruction.

Alternatively, fixtures can beattached directly to the finished drylinings using the recommendedfixings given in table 3.23.

For the medium and heavyweightfixings in table 3.23 it is veryimportant that the plasterboard iscarefully and accurately drilled andthat all fixings are installed as perthe manufacturer’s instructions.Holes should never be punched. On the bigger fixtures, it is necessaryto use a minimum of four fixings.

Tiling onto LafargeWallboardTiling is suitable for a wide range ofapplications with varying conditions, ranging from domestic splashbacksto shower cubicles in publicbuildings.

Ceramic tiling should be applied to Lafarge wallboards or LafargeMoisturecheck wallboard dependingon the severity of the conditions.Lafarge wallboards may be used asthe base for tiling in areas such assplashbacks behind kitchen sinks andwash hand basins. In other areaswhere there is likely to be moresplashing of water on the surface,e.g. showers, it is preferable to useLafarge Moisturecheck wallboard. If Lafarge wallboards are used itshould be treated on the face withtwo coats of Lafarge Drywall Sealer.

Where the tiling is to cover theentire drylined wall surface, squareedge boards may be used. Where an area of the drylining will remainuntiled, taper edge boards shouldbe used so that flush joints can beformed in the exposed areas; in thiscase the concealed joints should befilled with a waterproof ceramic tileadhesive.

Care should be taken to ensure thatthe framing members and liningboards offer adequate support toprevent flexing, particularly forpartitions which may be tiled on oneside only. Tiled areas not extendingdown to the floor should beprovided with horizontal supports at the base of the tiling.

Additional support requirements aregiven in table 8.6. Supports forbaths, basins and other plumbingfixtures must be providedindependently of the plasterboard.

It is essential that detailing atjunctions, angles and perimeters is designed to prevent moisturepenetration. Seal around pipes, baths, shower fittings, openings and outlets with a waterproofsilicone sealant.

Recommendations in table 8.6 applyto the use of tiles up to 12.5mmthick with a maximum weight of 32 kg/m2, fixed in accordance withBS 6431: Part 9, using a thin-bedadhesive (nominal thickness 3mm).**

Drylining systems using LafargeBonding Compound in theirconstruction should be allowed 10 days to achieve their full strengthbefore tiling.

Repairs

Minor damage to plasterboard maybe repaired by filling with LafargeFast Set and sanding smooth. Areasof damage too large for fillingshould be repaired by one of themethods below.

Cut out a rectangular piece of theboarding around the damaged areausing a fine-toothed keyhole saw.Bevel the edges of the hole inwardsat 45º with a rasp or sanding block.Cut a piece of board to the samesize as the hole and bevel the edgesto an exact fit. Apply Lafarge FastSet to the edges of the hole and fitthe patch piece in place usingLafarge Patching Tape (leave to

set for 1 hour). Finish around thepatch as described under Jointing in Section 7.

If necessary, bond a strip ofplasterboard behind the hole toprovide extra support beforeinserting the patch piece.

For larger repairs, cut a rectangularpiece of plasterboard 50mm largerthan the hole or damaged area.Place it over the hole and mark itsposition. Cut through the damagedboard along the diagonals of themarked rectangle with a fine-toothed keyhole saw; then cutthrough the paper facing aroundthe rectangle with a sharp knife, break away and remove the cutpieces of the wallboard.

Cut two backing pieces ofplasterboard and bond to the backof the boarding using Lafarge FastSet on each side of the hole; leaveto set for 1 hour.

Apply Lafarge Fast Set to thebacking pieces and fit the patchpiece of plasterboard into the holeusing Lafarge Patching Tape (leaveto set for 1 hour). Finish around thepatch as described in Section 7.
