ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an internationally acceptedspecification for an EnvironmentalManagement System (EMS). Using thissystem, we can establish, implement andmeasure our sustainability goals.

• We are the first office furnituremanufacturer to attain ISO 14001certification for all our major facilities

• Since our ISO program began, we haveavoided or saved close to $3 million onnatural gas, electricity, water, waste andwaste diversion

• In 2003, our corporate waste diversionrate was 45 percent (of the total wasteproduced, we recycled less than half ). By2007, that rate increased to 87 percent –a 100 percent improvement – surpassingthe goal set by the Province of Ontario of60 percent by 2008

• 2010 Acheivement at 87.8 percent

Design for the Environment

We have formalized DfE into a set ofeleven guidelines that shape new productdevelopment from material selection tomanufacturing processes to end-of-lifestrategies.• Eighty percent of a product’s environmentalimpact is determined at the design stage

GREENGUARD

Greenguard is an indoor air qualitycertification program established to improveair quality for employees and customers.

• Teknion was the first office furnituremanufacturer in North America to attainGreenguard certification for all major

• Within LEED’s Environmental QualityCategory, Teknion’s certified productscontribute to a Low Emitting Materialscredit

• Teknion Products certified to a morestringent certification – GREENGUARDChildren and Schools

Sustainable Textiles

Eighty percent of Teknion’s fabrics have anenvironmental attribute; fabrics with highrecycled content, fabrics made from PLA(Polylatic Acid), wool from naturally raisedsheep and antimony free polyester fabrics.Within LEED Teknion's fabrics cancontribute to recycled content, rapidlyrenewable and in some cases regionalmaterials.

Forest Stewardship Council

An international network promoting theresponsible management of the world’sforests, FSC tracks the chain of custody(CoC) from “the forest to the consumerincluding all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing anddistribution.”

• Teknion products using certified woodcontribute to the Materials and Resourcescategory of LEED, which recognizesFSC as the required standard

• Teknion offers FSC products made fromparticle board, MDF, veneer and solidlumber

District Environmental Contribution

District is a collection of desks, cabinets, windows and walls that reinterpretssystems furniture. District combines theattributes of classic furniture with thefunctionality of systems, making efficientuse of smaller footprints.

District echoes the work of mid-centurymodernists who designed office furniturewith characteristically low, horizontallines. The elegant architectural furnitureof this period had a remarkable transparencyachieved by elevated cabinets, overlappingsurfaces and a refined scale.

District uses and reinterprets these elementsfor the modern office. District’s worksurfaces, stackable storage and layering of productspromote higher planning efficiencies anda reduced footprint that result in less productoverall and its associated operational impact.Worksurface shapes are optimized for boardand surface yield. Modular componentsand the product’s reconfigurability extendproduct life.

District was designed for easy reconfigurationor relocation. It was also designed for easeof disassembly, with dissimilar materialsmechanically fastened to expedite end-of-life separation. District is available with

bio-based materials that do not negativelyimpact the environment, and is finishedusing a water-based MDF painting processwithout heating ovens versus the moretypical dry epoxy paint process. Distict isavailable PVC material free.

Marketplace Environmental Contribution

Marketplace reinvents the worktable, achieving a span up to 20 feet that fosterscreativity and collaboration in team-basedoffice environments. Marketplace is a visuallydramatic response for open collaborativeworkspaces including meeting, touchdownand team areas; as well as open planspaces designed to accommodate multipleproject teams.

By nature, teamwork and collaborativeenvironments require less space. Marketplaceis scaled to respect space limitations, accommodating eight 60-inch-wide workdesks while cleverly incorporating humanaspects of work - personalization of space,

storage and well-designed privacy options -which offer a more adept approach tosmaller spaces.

Marketplace was designed to require aminimum number of multi-use componentswith high recycled content or that are easilyrecycled at end of life. With its lightweightaluminum structural truss, Marketplaceweighs less than traditional worktables. Less

weight lowers freight and installation costs, and requires less manpower to assembleand move it about the floor space. Lessbuilding structure is also required to supportthe worktable. Marketplace can be extendedor reduced in length, adding flexibility forreconfiguration and extending product lifecycle. It was designed for easy reconfigurationand disassembly. Its unique chassis/bodyconstruction allows for additions of spacedivision, storage and electrics without waste.Components are easily added or removedfrom the standard chassis. Marketplace isavailable PVC-free.

Altos is an architectural wall that has beenin production since 1999. It can be usedto replace drywall or other fixed wallconstruction and its refined glass and aluminum details are both durable andarchitecturally neutral. It is designed to bereconfigured and reused multiple timeswith virtually no materials going to landfill.Further efficiencies of material come fromthe ability to hang furniture componentson the wall. Modular components and theproduct’s reconfigurability extend theuseful life of the wall and removable fasciasfacilitate refurbishment after years of use.Fascias are solid or glazed and finish optionsinclude reconstituted Flintwood veneersand FSC woods.

Optos is a seamless glass wall system with arefined design aesthetic. The wall providesfull-height space division with extensiveleveling tolerances, as well as visual andfunctional integration with Teknion's Altoswall system. Optos projects a highly refinedimage distinguished by simplicity andcontinuous transparency.

Optos was designed for easy reconfiguration, relocation and ease of disassembly forseparating materials at end-of-life recycling.Multi-use components reduce the numberof items needed to comprise an office.Frame and trim lengths are independent ofeach other to enable planning efficiencies forwaste reduction at assembly. Optos providesnatural light to enter the interior of thebuilding, creating a healthier workplaceand saving artificial lighting costs andenergy. Optos is PVC and Neoprene free.

Leverage Environmental Contribution

Leverage has been in production since1998. It was designed to be simpler andlighter than our earlier panel systems andinitially was fairly restricted in application. It was, however, still highly flexible withan open, stackable frame and removablefabric Elements allowing reconfigurationand reuse in a facility.

In the past decade, Leverage’s capabilitieshave been broadened and further materialand manufacturing efficiencies have beenrealized as volumes increased. A recent

multi-million dollar investment to automatethe production and upholstery of Elementshas reduced fabric scrap, allowed materialreductions in the Element frame, reducedglue usage and created a healthier andsafer work environment. Ease of disassemblyis also enhanced making reupholstery andrefurbishment simpler.

Leverage is designed with the same principlesof modularity, durability and ease ofreconfiguration that gave T/O/S such anextended life. This longevity and continuousupdating is good for business and goodfor the environment.

A Leverage workstation is lighter than most, meaning that less raw materials are usedand less energy is embedded in the product.Transportation costs are also reduced.

T/O/S Environmental Contribution

T/O/S has been in continuous productionsince 1983. It was one of the first panelsystems with an open, stackable frameand removable fabric Elements allowingreconfiguration and reuse in a facility. Manyof the earliest installations are still in usebecause of the durable and open-endeddesign of the product.

In addition, for the past 25 years we havedesigned new components and options toensure that even as office technology andworkstyles changed over time, the basicproduct never became obsolete.

In 2005 we formally launched the T/O/SRefresh program specifically aimed atallowing long-time users to update theirworkplace without discarding panels.Refurbishing existing components, addingnew components and replanning workstations allows an unusually long life forthe product. This longevity and continuousupdating is good for business and goodfor the environment.

T/O/S is a highly evolved product withtwo decades of design changes for wastereduction and manufacturing efficiencythat has substantially reduced the rawmaterial and energy content of the product.

Transit Environmental Contribution

Transit was launched in 1992 and given amajor redesign in 1997. It shares manycomponents and processes with TOS andhas the same open, stackable frame andremovable fabric elements that allowreconfiguration and reuse in a facility.Transit’s off module connecting systemwas one of the first in the industry andbrought an even greater ability to reconfigureand change on the fly. Many of the earliestinstallations are still in use because of theflexible, durable and open ended designof the product.

Since 1992 we have designed newcomponents and options to ensure thateven as office technology and work styleschanged over time, the basic product neverbecame obsolete. In 1997 Transit wasredesigned to work with Ability, a newproduct aimed at bringing full mobility toworkstations. Transit was able to adapt toa completely new way of working, furtherextending its useful life.

Transit is a highly evolved product with overfifteen years of design changes for wastereduction and manufacturing efficiencythat has substantially reduced the rawmaterial and energy content of the product.

Powder coated recycled steel, glass andaluminum are used for durability and easeof recycling. We offer many 100% recycledupholstery fabrics, reconstituted veneerand FSC certified wood options as well aspainted “seamless” or acrylic edged worksurface options. Transit workstations areGreenguard certified and include panelheights and glazing options that conformwith LEED requirements for access todaylight and view.

ie Environmental Contribution

ie transcends prior concepts of planning, providing virtually infinite freedom of form, function and look. ie is about geometryand imagination. Designed in Europe, iewas launched in North America in 2004.ie is based on a post-and-beam structurethat acts as an architectural frameworkfor interior and exterior workspaces. Thepost accommodates pod planning andangle connections at 15-degree intervals, greatly enlarging the compass of planning

possibilities. A simple set of multi-usecomponents creates diverse layouts, deliveringlong-term value through reduced cost ofownership. The genius of ie rests in itselegant and dynamic design, which deliversdiverse and infinite geometries for planning.

ie was designed for easy reconfigurationand disassembly. Its unique post-and-beamconstruction allows for additions of spacedivision, worksurface support and electricswithout waste. Components are easily addedor removed from the standard structure.

ie’s aluminium / metal structure wasdesigned to require a minimum numberof multi-use components with highrecycled content or that is easily recycledat end of life.

ie has been recently enhanced providingnew environmental options. Monolithicscreens, new construction, non-segmentedpost, shared power bar and new worksurfacesupport options have been added tohelp to reduce the use of material for atypical workstation.
