Principle of Operation:

The FPV, variable volume fan powered air terminal unit is essentially a single duct terminal with an integral fan chamber mounted

on the side (in parallel) to the primary air stream. The integral fan chamber contains a fan and induction port. The fan does not

continuously operate; therefore the primary air chamber and the fan chamber are separated by a back-draft damper to prevent

flow of conditioned air into the fan chamber, plenum space and backward rotation of the fan motor. The FPV is lined with

insulation to provide sound absorption and thermal resistance.

The basic operating principle of the FPV is that as the space cooling load is satisfied and the primary damper closes to a pre-set

minimum air flow, the terminal fan is energized to deliver warm plenum or return air to the primary air chamber, mixing it with

the reduced cold supply air, thereby reducing (or eliminating) the need for reheat. Because the terminal fan does not operate

until the primary air is reduced to a minimum level, less energy is used on a continuous basis as compared to a constant volume

fan powered air terminal.

The fan in an FPV generally operates at 50 to 65 percent of the maximum primary airflow, resulting in lower sound levels.

However, the intermittent operation of the terminal may cause occupants to notice the sound more so than if it was continuous.

Principle of Operation:

The basic operating principle of the FPC is that as the space cooling load is satisfied and the primary damper begins to close, the terminal

fan(s) continues to deliver the same amount of air, pulling warm air from the induction port and mixing it with the reduced cold air supply,

thereby reducing (or eliminating) the need for supplemental reheat.

An advantage of the FPC is that although the sound levels are somewhat higher than a variable volume fan powered air terminal, occupants

are less likely to notice the sound since it is continuous and uninterrupted.

For the majority of applications the terminal fan is run continuously during occupied hours. Additionally, the fan may be cycled on during

unoccupied periods when heating is required. The constant volume fan powered terminal is therefore ideal for reheat applications or where

constant air motion is desired. These applications include: Perimeter zones, hallways, entrance ways, restrooms, etc. These terminals are

also ideal for cold air distribution or ice storage systems where lower than normal supply air temperatures are tempered with warm ceiling

plenum air or heated return air, preventing potential room air diffusion problems

Chimneys and Gas Vents—Recommendations for Consultants:

When specifying natural draft chimneys always require that the submittal certify that the shop drawings' proposed exhaust system com-

plies with the appliance manufacturers' written requirements and that the installation will safely exhaust the connected equipment.

For Category I equipment: appliances with a draft hood or equipment listed for use with Type B gas vent, the draft calculation shall be

based upon the requirements set forth in the latest edition of NFPA 54 including NFPA 54's 'Sizing of Category I Venting Systems' and

NFPA 54's Vent Tables.

For all other Categories and appliance types, draft calculations shall be based upon the appliance manufacturers' written requirements.

The draft calculation shall be based upon ASHRAE's Chimney Design Equation and submitted with the appliance manufacturers' require-

ments for review and approval by the engineer.

The above figure is a screen capture from Enervex‘s FAN CALC chimney sizing software tool. It shows two high efficiency boilers

venting into a common chimney with an inline draft fan. The sizing software will automatically flag an incorrect chimney material,

and other code violations. The software will also pick an optimized chimney diameter whether a fan is present or not.

with tall stacks. These tall stacks lead to excessive chimney draft,

which impacts the ability of the boilers and water heaters to

The MCAS, Modulating Combustion Air Supply System™ is a

demand-controlled combustion or make-up air supply system

designed to provide the exact amount of combustion air for

mechanical room/laundry rooms. The system senses when no

appliances are running and operates at a very low speed,

maintaining neutral pressure in the room.

Reduces louver size from the 1 in² per 3,000 btu to a more

manageable 1100 fpm at the louver face using a fan to induce

the outside air. Smaller louvers make architects happy.

The History of Jenco Fan and it acquisition by Soler

Palau

They began a tradition of quality in the 1940‘s as Jenn-Aire, a small company in

Indianapolis, Indiana, started by a man named Lou Jenn. It was Jenn-Aire who

pioneered the industry‘s first spun aluminum exhaust fans over 60 years ago! A

strong commitment to providing quality products and a dedication to serving the

industry and the community quickly lead Jenn-Aire to become the industry‘s largest

manufacturer.

In 1960, Lou Jenn invented and

patented the unique cooking

stove that we all know today as

the Jenn-Aire range. As a result

of the company‘s success, a

commercial division was formed

called Jenn Industries to continue

building fans while the stoves

were built under the Jenn-Aire

name.

In 1988, Maytag retained the Jenn

-Aire stove division but sold the

fan division, Jenn Industries, to

Snyder General, who changed the name to JennFan and moved the manufacturing

plant to Scottsboro, Alabama. In 1995, Breidert Air Products purchased JennFan from

Snyder General and moved the manufacturing

plant from Alabama to Jacksonville, Florida;

three years after that JennFan was changed to

JencoFan.

Finally in 2004, JencoFan was acquired by

Soler & Palau Ventilation Group based in

Barcelona, Spain. Soler Palau‘s investment in

Jenco has made large improvements in

manufacturing capacity, cutting down lead

times, improving quality and building stock

levels. The investment has also led to more

new product launches.

APPLICATION

Model DB belt drive units are used for the exhaust of relatively clean air from a wide range

of commercial, industrial and institutional environments such as manufacturing and assembly

plants, office buildings, schools, hospitals, restaurants, athletic facilities arid many others.

The nonoverloading wheel~ with its higher static pressure capabilities makes this unit suita-

ble for either ducted or nonducted applications. It‘s roof mounting permits location near

the area to be ventilated, allowing short duct runs and more efficient operation.

The aluminum exterior provides an attractive appearance. Belt drive results in lower oper-

ating RPM and sound levels, making the Model DB well suited to applications where quiet

operation is important. Belt drive also permits easy performance adjustments when needed

to balance the total ventilation system.

CONSTRUCTION

APPLICATION

Model RED direct drive units are used to exhaust air from all types of commercial and

machinery and equipment rooms, and offices.

The nonoverloading wheel with its higher static pressure capability makes this unit suitable for either ducted or nonducted applications. It‘s roof mounting permits location near the area to be ventilated, allowing short duct runs and more efficient operation.

The spun aluminum exterior provides an attractive appearance and is compatible with belt

driven Model DB and companion gravity units to make up a complete ventilation system. Direct

drive units use smaller diameter wheels, resulting in low sound levels and quiet operation. They

have no belts or fan bearings to maintain or adjust and consequently require very little

maintenance.
