MDK System Telephone, Digital The digital MDK System Telephone, combined with the digital Multifunctional Desktop Call Station (MTSD), constitutes the central operator unit for universal MDK communications connections. This allows, for example, the telephone’s function buttons to be mapped to intercom line selection buttons of the MTSD. Signal and voice communication uses a modified DSS1 protocol. The MDK System Telephone can also be used as an independent telephone with all of the standard features of digital technology. However, it is not possible to connect the telephone directly to the phone company’s public network.

MDK PC Call Station NEMMS- the „ms Neumann Management System“ NEMMS is a computer-aided management system for which the configuration of the user-interface is variable. It works in a direct combination with the MDK-system. The operational areas of a customer can be graphically illustrated and accessed in separate sub-areas. The actions are executed by imbedded buttons in the respective graphic, and the handling is mouse-driven. Messages are also displayed according to the area of operation. For example there is a graphical transmission of the status of the sensors. So every demand of the customers concerning the ergonomics of the user-interface can be satisfied. One example for the innovative interface design shows the applications in Switzerland for emergency systems in tunnels. So far the following projects were realised: Gotthard, Seelisberg and the federal road N5 Features

• Monitor-Communication Terminal for location based operation

• Variable desktop screen

• Graphical and location based switch buttons

• Location based messages

• Separation into customized operator screens

• Direct connection to the MDK

Technical Details

IP Rating of Enclosures As per DIN 40 050 / IEC / VDE 0470 / EN 60529 International standards classify the type of protection an enclosure provides by using a two-digit IP (International Protection) code that indicates the degree of protection the enclosure provides against the penetration of foreign objects, dust and water. A typical IP number for weatherproof enclosures is, for example, IP65 1). 1st Digit of

IP Code Degree of protection against the penetration of

solid foreign objects and hazardous access 2nd Digit of

IP Code Degree of protection against water

0 No protection 0 No protection

1 Protected against the penetration of large foreign objects with a diameter greater than 50 mm

1 Protected against the ingress of vertically falling water drops

2 Protected against the penetration of medium-sized foreign objects with a diameter greater than 12 mm

2 Protected against water drops falling at an angle of up to 15º from the vertical

3 Protected against the penetration of small foreign objects with a diameter greater than 2.5 mm

3 Protected against water sprayed at any angle up to 60º from the vertical

4 Protected against the penetration of tools, wire (particulate foreign objects) with a diameter greater than 1.0 mm

4 Protected against water splashing against the enclosure from any direction

5 Completely protected against access to hazardous voltage carrying parts and internal moving parts. Protected against harmful accumulation of dust. Penetration of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not be to an extent that would impair proper functioning.

5 Protected against water jets sprayed through a nozzle against the enclosure from any direction

6 Completely protected against access to hazardous voltage carrying parts and internal moving parts. Protected against the penetration of dust.

6 Protected against powerful water jets or temporary flooding (heavy seas)

7 Protected against temporary immersion in water under defined conditions of time and pressures corresponding to depths between 0.15 and 1 m

8 Protected against continuous submersion in water

9K Protected against water sprayed from high-pressure water or steam cleaning jets directed at the enclosure from any direction

1) If an IP protection rating is not specified for one of the two categories, then the letter X is used instead of the respective digit, e.g. IPX4

General Information on the Designation of Explosion-Proof Equipment The designation of electrical equipment and protection systems when put to their intended use in potentially explosive areas is determined according to the requirements of EC Directive 94/9/EC. The following is an example: II 2G EEx d e ib IIC T4 Explanation: 1. Zones / Equipment Groups / Equipment Categories There are 2 Equipment Groups: the designation “I” is assigned to electrical equipment for use in underground mining, the designation “II” for use in surface industries. The areas in which there is a risk of explosion are divided into Zones according to the likelihood of a potentially explosive atmosphere being present. In each Zone, the proper equipment must be used according to the Equipment Category (area of usage). The current IEC regulation defines the following Zones:

Classification of Hazardous Areas / Equipment Categories / Equipment Groups

Combustible Materials

Characteristic for the Explosive Mixture

Zones Equipment Group (for use in surface industries or underground)

Equipment Category

Present continuously or frequently or for long periods

Zone 0 II 1G

Likely to occur in normal operation

Zone 1 II 2G (also 1G) G: Gases, Vapours, Fumes

Not likely to occur in normal operation and if it occurs it will exist only for a short time

Zone 2 II 3G (also 2G and 1G)

Present continuously or frequently or for long periods

Zone 20 II 1D

Likely to occur in normal operation

Zone 21 II 2D (also 1D) D: Dusts

M2 or M1 Explosion Subgroups: Classification of Gases and Vapours Equipment Group “II” is divided into three Gas Groups where IIA is the least volatile and Group IIC the most volatile. North America uses a differing classification according to “Classes” (I, II, III): “Class I” refers to gases and vapours (see table).

Explosion Subgroups / Typical Gases CENELEC / IEC Typical Gases U.S.A. and Canada

I Methane no classification

IIA Propane, n-Butane, Kerosene Class I, Group D

IIB Ethylene, Hydrogen sulphide, Ethyl ether Class I, Group C

2. Types of Explosion Protection To enable electrical equipment to be used in areas where there is a risk explosion, various explosion protection techniques must be employed to prevent the equipment from igniting explosive atmospheres. Different techniques are used depending on the application and equipment: exclusion of the explosive atmosphere (o, q, m), purged and pressurized (p), containment of internal explosion (d), special mechanical designs (n, e), limiting electrical energy (ia, ib), as well as other measures (s). Each of these techniques is subject to national and/or international standards and regulations. EEx: Explosion Protection certified according to CENELEC Standard EN 50… Explosion Protection certified according to CENELEC Standard EN 50… corresponds to the relevant IEC standards and stipulates equipment safety measures that guarantee at least the same degree of safety as the European standards.

Classification into Temperature Classes Hot surfaces can also ignite gas/air mixtures when the equipment’s surface temperature reaches the ignition temperature of the potentially explosive atmosphere. To guard against this, all electrical equipment intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere is classified according to the maximum surface temperature it will reach in service.
