Proclaim January February 2014 Proclaim Newsletter of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church Mahtomedi, Minnesota “Crucifixion” by Paul Granlund Created by sculptor Paul Granlund in 1969, “Crucifixion” is a two-piece sculpture in cast bronze. Paul Granlund (1925-2001) was born in Min- neapolis, MN and recognized as a major sculptor in the region, as well as nationally and abroad. He became artist-in-residence at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN in 1971, a position he held until he retired in 1996. The sculpture is designed to be used as a processional cross or set on its base as a single work. It is 84-1/2 inches high x 9-3/8 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches deep. The sculpture was given by members of St. Andrew’s choirs as a tribute to the music programs of St. Andrew's. This cross will be displayed in the Sanctuary Atrium and will occasionally lead us in the worship processional. It will also serve in the procession to the columbarium in the committal service, reminding all of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection promise. The apostle Paul’s words identify each of us with Christ’s crucifixion in his words: “I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Jesus’ word to his hearers in the Gospel of John is the theme of the “Crucifixion” sculpture: “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to myself” (John 12:32). As Jesus’ arms are raised in this visual image of crucifixion, we see not only the resignation of death, which has finally come to his tortured body, but also the raising up of Jesus’ arms in triumph to the Father as his last word proclaims: “It is finished” (John 19:30). As members of the body of Christ, we have been molded, even cast into the likeness of the Christ who died for us, is risen from the dead, and lives and reigns to all eternity. In Christ we have died to sin and raised from death by the glory of God. This is most certainly true.

“Crucifixion”by Paul Granlund

Created by sculptor Paul Granlund in 1969, “Crucifixion” is a two-piecesculpture in cast bronze. Paul Granlund (1925-2001) was born in Min-neapolis, MN and recognized as a major sculptor in the region, as well asnationally and abroad. The sculpture was given by members of St. Andrew’s choirs as a tribute tothe music programs of St. Andrew's. This cross will be displayed in theSanctuary Atrium and will occasionally lead us in the worship processional. It will also serve in the procession to the columbarium in the committalservice, reminding all of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection promise.

The apostle Paul’s words identify each of us with Christ’s crucifixion in hiswords: “I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christwho lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Jesus’ word to his hearers in the Gospelof John is the theme of the “Crucifixion” sculpture: “When I am lifted upfrom the earth, I will draw all to myself” (John 12:32). As Jesus’ arms areraised in this visual image of crucifixion, we see not only the resignation ofdeath, which has finally come to his tortured body, but also the raising up of Jesus’ arms in triumph to the Father as his last wordproclaims: “It is finished” (John 19:30).

As members of the body of Christ, we have been molded, even cast into the likeness of the Christ who died for us, is risen from thedead, and lives and reigns to all eternity. In Christ we have died to sin and raised from death by the glory of God.

This is most certainly true.

Right now one of the books I am reading is, “The Power ofHabit, Why We Do What We Do In Life And Business” byCharles Duhigg. The book is fascinating. It tells us how habitsare formed, how they work, and how changing just one “Key-stone habit” and then another and another can shape andchange our lives. The same is true of our spiritual lives.

Years ago my wife and I made a decision to tithe. We tried todo it all at once and failed, so we did not try again for a longtime. Eventually we began to change our habits and set agoal of increasing our giving by just one percent a year. In time we grew beyond tithing. Tithing is now a natural part ofour life. It is a habit. For years I wanted to read through theBible from cover to cover. I would be on schedule for a while, but then I would get sick, get behind schedule, or get lost inthe book of Lamentations and I would just quit. Finally I real-ized that it wasn’t getting to the end that mattered but mak-ing Bible reading part of my daily discipline was. Now Biblereading is a daily habit, and in 2014 I will start through theBible for the fourth year in a row. Habit is why I have invitedyou to commit to reading through the Bible in 2014. Buildingspiritual disciplines into our daily lives, scripture study,

prayer, generosity, having them becomehabits does not earn us salvation, but itdoes help us to grow closer to the cre-ator and sustainer of life.

In 1892 William James wrote, “All of ourlife, so far as it has definite form, is buta mass of habits.” Let this new year bea year where you add one “keystone”spiritual habit to your life. Then anotherand another and…….

In Christ,

by Kris Mason, Resource Center Team Member

At the Community Resource Center we work daily with familiesthat are facing a housing crisis. And although we hear somesimilar causes for the crisis, each family has their own story –hurdles to overcome and moti-vation to get back on their feet.

Late in September, a mom, dadand their six children came inseeking help. They had beensecurely housed until mom losther job and dad required amedical leave from his. Theyran out of money quickly andwere unable to afford their rent.He was returning to work, but not in time to stay in their home. They needed to leave, build their savings back up, and find anew home for their family.

While in our Emergency Shelter Program, this family workedhard! They were in the Resource Center everyday meeting withcase managers and working on their goal plan. Very soon, dad

started working again and mom found a job with hours oppositeof dad’s so they could avoid extra day care costs. It did take awhile to find an apartment for a family of eight. But becausethey were both working and saving their money in our escrowplan, they were able to move in to their new apartment in De-cember just in time for Christmas. Our partnership with Bridg-ing helped provide them with a sofa, dressers, beds, and akitchen table and chairs to furnish their new home.

The familysent us athank you cardafter theymoved inwhich read;“It’s so won-derful to havepeople touchour lives theway that you have with us. Thanks to your generosity and car-ing we are able to piece our life together.”

We at St. Andrew's are reaching out to those in our communitywho have trouble putting food on their tables. Sharing dinneron Thursday evenings is only a beginning. Our Resource Centertries to help secure employment, provide housing, etc to freeup funds to buy needed food.

Those efforts are likely more important than simply feedinghungry people They attack a cause of hunger, in this case alack of funds.

Our ELCA World Hunger Program does this on a wider scale. Itattacks the root causes of hunger both in the U.S. (our own Re-source Center has received help) and in areas of the worldwhere hunger literally kills thousands daily. It strives to reducehunger as well as feed people, as important as that is. Diggingwells, health care and disease prevention, nutrition education, and below-market loans are a few of the ways it does this.As ELCA members, we are a part of this ministry. Check it out atwww.elca.org/hunger or call 1-800-NET ELCA to learn more ofwhat we can do together.

Another Way to ServeThe statistics are mind-boggling: 842 million worldwide will go to bed hungry tonight. Yes, that many.

Most are in Third World countries, but millions are in our country as well.

I wanted to touch base with everyone at St. Andrew’s and sharesome amazing things God is doing here at St Andrews throughTreeHouse. Below is a newsletter I sent out to my supporterswhich explains a retreat we recently went on with some of ourkids. Hope you enjoy:

Another summer has come to an end. School has rebooted andour TreeHouse kids are back in the classroom working hard tostay focused on what we tell them here at TreeHouse; that theyare loveable, capable, worthwhile, and not alone. Sadly, we areaware that what should be a fun year of seeing friends everyday in the halls, at lunch, or in math, gym, etc. turns out to beone of the greatest fearsour youth face. Schoolfor most of our kids be-comes like an axe totheir self-worth and self-esteem, striking down any hope of feeling wanted or accepted. To simplify it, school becomes just another place that resembles…home.

In our attempt to help our kids feel connected and boost theirconfidence my staff and I decided to use our fall-retreat as atime of team building in hopes to bring our kids closer togetherby supporting and helping each other. As a result, we designedan exciting obstacle course they had to work their way throughleaving no one behind. And…occasionally an ‘event’ wouldtake place causing a staff member or kids to become “blind” or“crippled.” This caused kids to step up and literally guide andcarry each other up hills, through mud, and water. Within min-utes, our kids were rallying behind one another filling the airwith shouts of encouragement when one member was down.

Within the midst of that day we turned the corner towards ourlast obstacle. With three inner-tubes, a large board, and 200feet of rope, the only thing that stood in the way of a warm fire, clean clothes, and s’mores was…the pond. This was their task:Using ALL of the tools at hand (rope, tubes, board) you must getevery individual across this pond. After 30 minutes discussinghow in the world they were to do this, it happened. One of our

kids (I will call him Brian) stood up and said, “Okay, well one ofus is going to have to sacrifice going across first to see if ouridea will work and I’ll do it.” Looking at Brian his peers agreedand I stood silent so proud of what I was seeing!! FYI: the waterwas freezing and we were all standing in a ‘quick-sand’ type ofmud that would suck up your shoes in seconds. This was not apleasant place to be. By laying the board on the three tubes,Brian jumped on with a peer who decided to go with him hold-ing one end of the rope in hopes to create a type of ferry; Oneperson would get across (while we held the rope on our end)and hold the rope while the other pulled their way back to pickup the next person. Upon Brian and his peer reaching the mid-

dle of the pond, we allwatched in anticipation.Would it work?! Would hemake it?! As the tubes startedto slide away, Brian found

himself in a predicament!! Keeping his balance he broke the si-lence with his sarcastic wit screaming, “I LOVE TreeHouse!!ONLY at TreeHouse this would be happening!!!!” The group ofkids hoping for his success in bursts out laughing screaming, “IKNOW!!! WHAT ARE WE DOING?! THIS IS CRAZY!” Giggling in themidst of a terrible situation, they were finding joy in workingtogether! Before my eyes, these kids who battle with believingthey can overcome struggles at home and school, began to be-lieve they could actually overcome this pond, “JUST KEEPGOING BRIAN!! YOU CAN DO IT!”

In the end….we ALL (including staff) made it across working to-gether as one big family. In the end…they overcame an obsta-cle they didn’t believe they could conquer. In the end…theybegan to believe there was such a thing as ‘hope.’ It was possi-ble to overcome the Goliaths in their life. It was and is possibleto overcome the struggles of school and home. And…with thehope and help of Jesus Christ…WE CAN DO ANYTHING.

Because of what your church has done here at St. Andrew’s,Christ is transforming lives!

Thank you and God Bless. Sally Mixon and the TreeHouse Team!

Prayer Shawl MinistryA tangible evidence of prayer. We have a Prayer Shawl Ministry that of-fers tangible evidence of prayer; prayersthat are knit into the shawls and that therecipient is wrapped in with each shawl.

One member of the prayer shawl grouptold us that she had taken a shawl to asick friend with the prayers and a cardand was very surprised and moved byhow much the shawl meant to her friend. She told her daughter of this experienceand was surprised when her daughtertearfully asked her to make a shawl forher. The woman asked her daughter whyshe wanted a prayer shawl and thedaughter told her she wanted the shawlso she could wrap herself in God’s loveand prayers for the rest of her life.

Our prayer shawl group meets the SEC-OND Saturday of every month in the Gar-den Room of St. Andrew’s Village from9-11 a.m. Come and pray and knit withus if you can, or pray and knit at homeand bring us your shawl for gifting.

The Benevolence Committee recently awarded a second ScholarshipGrant to Sarah Alek Ajang Kongor Daau. The grant for $6,000 will fullyfund her second academic year at Daystar University. In the 2012-2013 fiscal year the Benevolence Committee fully funded her firstyear of college. The following is excerpted from her Daystar Univer-sity Student Profile.

“My name is Sarah Alek Ajang Kongor. I am married to John ChoiDaau. I was born in 1983 in Malakai, South Sudan. My schooling hasnot been systematic and smooth. It was disrupted many times as aresult of war and the fact that I had to keep moving with relatives. Be-fore Sudan was divided, I completed my eighth grade in Khartoum. Ilater joined high school in South Sudan, after independence.

I met my husband, who encouraged and stood by me to finish my high school. My husband encouraged me to continue with myeducation. In our new country of South Sudan, as a result of war and also as part of my Dinka culture, not many women go toschool to read and write. Usually when girls are married, that is the end of their education. However, my husband is different. He would want to see all women educated in South Sudan. He went to Daystar University. I am majoring in Psychology and Counseling.

One of my biggest dreams is to help needy children, especially orphans, (the grant recipient was an orphan herself during the Sudanese civil war),to help provide them with good education and better health services. I believe that children deserve care andspecial provision to enable them to embrace a bright future. I would want to be a mother as well as a good helper to work alongside my husband who is working hard to establish a Christian college in South Sudan. He desires to continue pastoring andteaching.

Above all, I love Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. I came to know Christ personally at the age of 15. However, I came to experi-ence and affirm my faith in Christ as a result of Jesus’ protection, provision and comfort during my difficulties as an orphan. I wasoverwhelmed with fear of the unknown and growing with bitterness in my heart as a result of receiving less care, but Jesus cameinto my heart in a special way, assuring me of salvation. This happened when I joined a fellowship with a group of students at anEvangelical Church in Kahrtoum. My faith took a dramatic change. In everything, my hope is in Christ. My love increases as I expe-rience the love of Jesus. “

Sarah Alek Ajang Kongor is one example of the many lives St. Andrew’s congregation is able to reach out and help in Jesus’sname through the work of the Benevolence Committee. To learn more about the work of the Benevolence Committee please visit usunder the Give tab at St. Andrew’s web site.

Where There Is A Will …There Is A WayJanuary signals the start of everyone’s resolu-tion season. One common topic for resolutionscenters on our finances. For many people, onekey resolution is the need for a will. Making awill is an important means to extend your love, generosity and gratitude to family, friends, andthe charitable causes you value after yourdeath.

If you don’t have a will, your estate will be di-vided according to the laws of the state where you live. Whilecertain family members will receive the part of your estateafter taxes, your close friends and charities that you wanted toremember will not be included.

With so much on the line, did you know that over 60% of par-ents with children do not have a will? To make the issue moreserious, for many who do have a will it is out of date due tochanging conditions and intent. So why do so many peopleprocrastinate on creating or updating a will? Perhaps thewhole thing seems too time-consuming, difficult, depressing oreven mysterious.

The Foundation of St. Andrew’s is here to help you succeedwith this resolution. If you go to the St. Andrew’s church web-site, at the bottom of the home page, you will see a link for theFoundation. You can click through options for estate planningon the right side to gain valuable information about wills. There are over 20 pamphlets available in the E-brochure sec-tion that provide a wealth of free and confidential informationregarding estate planning and wills. Find them at:http://www.gftpln.org/stelterweb/CategoryDetailList.do?orgId=6059&categoryId=266.

The Foundation will host a series of informational meetingswith legal and financial advisors in 2014 to explain the impor-tance of wills and get you started on the process. In one meet-ing we will cover the basics of traditional wills. At a second wewill highlight the importance of a living will to cover vital in-structions for medical care. In our third gathering we will showhow to tie your values into your legacy process with your fam-ily in an ethical “will” or letter to your family and friends. Lookin the bulletin insert for more information on topics, dates andtimes. Help us show you that where there is a way, there canbe a will.
