PROGRAMMECHENNAI
CHENNAI PHOTO BIENNALE
organized by CPB Foundation and
Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai
in association with The Hindu
The second edition of Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB), an international biennale of
photography, was inaugurated on 22 February and will continue until 24 March 2019 with
large scale exhibitions in a variety of public spaces, showing works by over 50 artists in
print from 13 countries across the city of Chennai. Alongside the exhibitions, the Biennale
will include an extensive programme of artist talks, workshops, films, projections,
residencies, skill development in photography and much more. The Artistic Director of the
festival is Pushpamala N.
Extraordinary collections of photography works by internationally renowned artists are
exhibited in historic, heritage buildings and public spaces in Chennai city. These spaces are
transformed into beautiful galleries and the exhibitions are presented in harmony with
the buildings/spaces that they are displayed in. This enables the public to explore old
Madras & new Chennai along with the arts.
The CPB vision is to create an accessible and meaningful photography event by engaging
diverse communities as well as bringing together practitioners, curators, thinkers,
gallerists, allied arts and the general public. Spread along the length of the city, from the
Senate House along the Marina to Cholamandal Artist Village along the ECR, CPB extends
itself beyond traditional exhibition spaces and enhances the cultural offering of the city to
residents and visitors alike.
Welcome to Chennai Photo Biennale!

The word ‘photography’ was created from the Greek roots ‘phôtos’, meaning
‘light’ and 'graphé’ or ‘representation by means of lines’ together meaning
‘drawing or writing with light’.
Where does photography stand today? Is the idea of photography dead in the
digital age or does the photographic image survive in multiple avatars
celebrating, archiving, disturbing and investigating every aspect of our lives?
Does the photograph stand as a witness or does it spread fake news? Is the
photograph evidence? Is the photograph a document or is it somehow a strange
and surreal version of our world? Why are photographers getting arrested and
killed? Why are we looking at historical archives and why are new photographic
archives being created? Is the photographic archive a form of resistance, or activism? Is the selfie a form of citizenship?
Is the digital world too fast for us and how do we slow it down? Is photography the way we can look inside our own
bodies? Can photography change the world? Is photography dream or magic? Are we obsessed with photography?

Citizenship as seen through this issue brings certain temporal trajectories into focus:
about rights that can be exercised; leftist social movements that have existed and
grown; and hierarchies of viewership that have changed. Is the citizen an operative
of the state/regime or does he or she have the authority to challenge it? Are there
creative strategies, aesthetic productions and collective methods of countering
hegemony? With the rise of art and activist initiatives as well as online presences
today – the visual field now has a distinct purpose and mandate for readability
outside the norm when aesthetics and art become political activities.

MARCH | DANCE
4 - 16 March 2019 | Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan
When dance is seen as a language of the body, it becomes inevitable to question the limits of the body. Starting from our bodily histories
to the surrounding discourses on practice, politics and culture, the move within the contemporary idiom is concerned with the need to
interrogate our process and position in contexts that are rapidly changing.
Does the nature of choreographic practice change with each new context, or is there a constant set of principles that define what the
practice is? How do we evolve as practitioners?
MARCH | DANCE 2019 raises the question and from a range of differing perspectives challenges our understanding of creation and
performance, while promoting enquiry into the creative process as a whole.
In a coming together of improvisation, performance and research, this edition of the festival seeks to make the questions around dance
and the body more pertinent to how we locate ourselves as critical beings, constantly redefining our relationships to history, politics and
practice.
Veteran performer Maya Krishna Rao brings her distinct language of improvised performance while taking time to share her unique
modes of building a language of the body that is subversive and strong.
Anna Huber from Switzerland, critically acclaimed as a performer and soloist, visits the architecture of the body in a workshop, while
taking the viewer through a reconstruction of a solo as a way to begin with nothing and allow the body to reveal its meaning.
Musician Maarten Visser and theatre/visual artist Pravin Kannanur lead a workshop on modes of listening and responding between
practitioners of different arts that culminates in a site-specific sharing of their experience.

DIGITAL CONCERT HALL
in cooperation with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
19 April 2019 | 7.00 pm | Goethe-Institut Auditorium
Beethoven & Mozart with Simon Rattle & Mitsuko Uchida
at the Easter Festival
Goethe-Institut invites the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to its auditorium in a digital format with high definition
video live-streaming for the connoisseurs of Western classical music of Chennai. The Digital Concert Hall with
excellent sound and video is the best close-to-real experience one can get.
The Beethoven cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle has
been a great success with critics and audiences in Berlin and on tour. A halt on this 'wondrous journey' by Rattle
through Beethoven's symphonic cosmos was also heard at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden with a star cast of
soloists and the Prague Philharmonic Choir. The ninth and the final symphony is probably Beethoven’s most
famous composition which has again and again been the subject of political and musical dispute.
The programme was completed by Mozart's Piano Concerto in E flat major K. 482, whose Andante is one of the most moving
and saddest movements by the composer. The soloist, Mitsuko Uchida, made an unforgettable impression as a protagonist of
another cycle with the same constellation when, in 2010, she performed the complete piano concertos of Ludwig van
Beethoven with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic.
Programme
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.22 in E flat major, K. 482 (38 min.)
