For Starters…
Physically secure your computer by using security cables and locking doors and windows in your office and at home.
Avoid leaving your laptop unsupervised and in plain view in the library or coffee house, or in your car, office or home.
Set up a user account and password to prevent unauthorized access to your computer files.
Do not install unnecessary programs on your computer.

Think about this…

Social Networking leads to cyberbullying and online predation.
However, Social Networking also results in opportunities to connect with others who they might not have otherwise met and create meaningful relationships.
How do we balance these harms and benefits, reducing the one and increasing the possibility of the other?
Do social networkers have a right to privacy?
What is a private person’s right to control the images and information about them available on line?

Your Password is Pathetic.
{(Actually all of ours are!)

We often unknowingly volunteer information that makes hacking easy.

Ways to Make Your Passwords Secure
Mariam Shoaib - Catalyst Woman Consultancy
Use strong, unique passwords for every site to reduce the risk of someone breaking into your account.
• The key aspects of a strong password are length (the longer the better); a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols; and no tie to your personal information.
• Use unique passwords for each site or service. This way, if your password is discovered on one site, the rest of your services aren’t at risk.
• Avoid passwords with personal information, dictionary words in any language, words spelled backwards, abbreviations, and sequences or repeated characters (“abcdefgh” or “12345678”).
• Use a phrase. “2BorNot2B_ThatIsThe?” (To be or not to be, that is the question.)
• Incorporate shortcut codes or acronyms. “CSThnknAU2day!” (Can’t Stop Thinking About You Today!)
• Play with your keyboard. Use your keyboard as a canvas to draw on. For example, “1qazdrfvgy7” is just the letter “W.”

As a professional, What do you think are some challenges women face
while engaging in social networking?

Identity Theft

Trolling Cyber-Bullying

Never, ever meet in person someone you’ve only met online without taking somebody else along and meeting
in a public place.
Remember, people are not always who they say they are.
Women often feel uncomfortable setting safety boundaries because they don’t want to offend someone; but good people will understand and encourage you to set safety requirements, its the crooks who want you to
feel guilty about it.

Trust your instincts
Online and offline, your instincts play a critical role in your protection.
If something feels ‘off’, go with your instinct.
You don’t have to explain your reasoning to anyone.
