Science Fair(Kindergarten-5th Grade)What makes you wonder? A Science Fair is your chance to tackle your question about why things happen the way they do, and showcase your results for your family, friends, classmates, schoolmates, and maybe even others from outside the school and district! All elementary school students are welcome to participate in this Science Fair at their school, where every person participating in the fair will receive a participation ribbon. A licensed teacher at each school will serve as the advisor for this program and will provide interested students with registration materials and information packets. Teachers will also check in with all registered students in the weeks leading up to the School Science Fair, but most work is expected to be completed by students on their own time, with the family providing all necessary supplies for the chosen project. Science is rarely tested by one person working alone. You are welcome to work with other students on one project, but all students must register separately. Top projects presented by students in grades 3-5 will be selected by a panel of judges. The students that completed these projects will be invited to participate in the Regional Science Fair in Mankato on Saturday, April 30th. The Regional Fair is optional and there is an additional fee of $15 for students to participate in this event. Families are responsible for transportation to this event. Additional information and registration deadline will be available from the advisor at each school. No discounts.

the Emperor’s new Clothes(Ages 6-17)Stagehands Productions performance based program encourages you to develop artistic, social and personal skills through the exploration of your own creativity and expression. This course aims to cultivate stage presence, performance technique and an appreciation of the performing arts. The creative environment nurtures children’s natural gifts and develops the strengths critical to theatrical performances, such as character development, vocalization, focusing on diction and projection, memorization and choreography. In this production of The Emperor’s New Clothes, adapted by Kathryn Schultz Miller, lots of laughs are in store when Peter, the mischievous tailor, comes up with a sure-fire get rich quick scheme to embarrass the vain Emperor and make off with a basket of jewels and gold. Peter uses all his wit and magic to convince the court he can make magic clothes! Only those who are very smart can see the clothes, he tells them. So everyone pretends they can see the clothes until...someone in the audience shouts out the truth! Auditions are held during the second session. Additional fees are charged to attend performances ($5 per attendee), however each cast member will receive two complimentary tickets to one performance. Register early! From the SuperintendentIn this age of Tweets, blogs and mass

emails, the face of communications has changed dramatically in a relatively short amount of time. We live in a digital age where electronic forms of communications are common marketing tools and social media is now a mainstream phenomenon.

You may think of electronic communications as effective mediums in your personal life or in business but they are just as relevant in school communications.

Electronic communications enables the district to reach more people quickly, easily and affordably. It also presents an opportunity for better two-way communications.

A recent district-wide survey indicated the use of email and website as sources for district information has soared since 2006. We have also learned that residents in the Prior Lake-Savage area are tech savvy and favor social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

As a result, district communications is following suit to reach stakeholders in ways that are meaningful to them. Here are just a few examples:

You can now follow Community Education Services on Twitter: • Twitter.com/isd719commed and Facebook: ISD719CommEd.

You can register for Community Education Services classes online.• District-wide news updates can be found on Twitter: Twitter.com/isd719.• We have implemented a new email system called Constant Contact where • anyone in the community can sign up to receive important news, events and program information. A dedicated email address has been established for those who want to • provide feedback on a topic or issue: [email protected] Board meetings will soon be available on the district’s website. •

Of course traditional mediums such as catalogs, other mailings and face-to-face interactions will always remain an important part of the communications mix. Electronic communications simply offer new ways to reach more people with greater efficiency.

I hope you will try out some of these new communications tools to stay in touch with your community schools. You may even want to check out my new blog: http://intouchwithdrgruver.blogspot.com. If you would like to receive district news via email, please contact [email protected]

I look forward to sharing our district’s success stories with you throughout the school year and want to hear your stories too. I hope you will stay in touch. There is a lot to celebrate in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools!
