As a major University, we could boast about our large

student population and diverse fields of study, but as a truly

great University, we're focused on more. We educate tomorrow's

doctors, nurses, teachers, artists, thinkers and leaders. We

research developments in science and medicine that lead to

treatments for disease. We serve the community as a source of

both scholarly and practical knowledge. We prepare individuals

for the high-skill, high-wage careers that are the foundation of our

changing economy.

FAU is more than a place to get a degree —

it's a place to shape the future.

FLORIDA ATLANTICUNIVERSITY opened its doors in 1964 as the first public university insoutheast Florida. Today, just fourdecades later, FAU serves almost26,000 students at locations inBroward, Palm Beach and St.Lucie counties, with campuses inBoca Raton, Dania Beach, Davie,Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter and PortSt. Lucie.

CRAIG ANGELOSwas named Director of Athletics at Florida Atlantic University inJuly 2003, assuming oversightresponsibility for the institution's17-team intercollegiate athleticprograms.

When Angelos first arrived, heenthusiastically embraced hismulti-faceted role. He has sincemoved at a rapid pace to take the program to the next level, by working with President Brogan,FAU students and staff. His effortsand the Athletic Department’sgrowth is built on four funda-mental principles; institutionalcontrol, academic excellence, fiscal integrity, and winningchampionships.

Since his arrival, he has beeninstrumental in Florida Atlantic’sDivision I-A ascension and SunBelt Conference affiliation byconducting a feasibility study, compiling a market assessment aswell as a strategic plan for theUniversity’s move. He initiatedand chaired the University's brandidentity campaign and saw itcome to a conclusion with newmarks in the spring of 2005.Along the way, a televisioncontract was secured in 2004 thatsaw ESPN and Fox Sports producefive of the six football road gamesthat aired. The department alsobecame the fourth universitywithin the state of Florida to havean all-sports apparel deal with

Nike, Inc., joining Florida State,Florida and Miami.

In his first two years at FAU, five conference titles have beencaptured and the Owls haverepresented the university in post-season competition seven times. Two individuals earned All-Americastatus while two earned AcademicAll-America honors. Thedepartment’s commitment to aholistic approach to studentathlete excellence culminated in2005 with 40% of the student-athletes maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A.and with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports honoring FAU as an Academics and SportsOutreach and Community ServiceProgram Honor Roll member. This was made possible in partdue to the recent creation of aChamps/Lifeskills program thatassists the student-athletesdevelopment in the areas ofacademic and athletic excellence, personal and career developmentand community service.

Perhaps, most significantly, underhis leadership this past year thedepartment has been able todevelop a three year balancedbudget plan that will assure thelong-term stability of the athleticprograms.

Angelos’ efforts to market theteams, build a fan base andshowcase the University onnational television has greatlyenhanced the overall image of theathletics program. In 2004,football ticket sales rose 30%,attendance was improved by 130%and student attendance rose 906%despite not playing a home gameuntil six games into the schedule. His search for a new basketballcoach came to a conclusion inearly April with the hiring of MattDoherty, who earned the Associate

Press 2001 national coach of the year award and put FAU on the map as one of only twouniversities in the country that has a football and men’sbasketball coach who has earnedDivision I-A national coach-of-the-year honors.

Almost immediately after hisarrival at FAU, Angelos initiated amaster plan and review of allathletic facilities, including thefeasibility of building an on-campus football and basketballvenue that would solidify theathletic department's positionamong top-tier institutions. Thatproject has also moved forward ata rapid pace. His plan not onlyincludes the “Carrier Dome Like”facility but, every team will betouched by facility improvementsupon it completion.

Prior to coming to FAU, he wasthe Deputy Director of Athleticsand Chief Operating Officer atIndiana University since January2002. While there, he supervisedmany aspects of the athleticdepartment including the footballprogram and was instrumental innegotiating a Nike contract for 23of its 24 sports. Previously, he wasat the University of Miami (FL) foreight years, serving in a variety of

positions but mostly in thenumber two-spot under athleticsdirector Paul Dee. Prior to arrivingon campus, he spent three yearsat the NCAA as a legislativeassistant interpreting rules andregulations of the association. He is now entering his 15th year as an administrator inintercollegiate athletics.

A graduate of the CreightonUniversity School of Law inOmaha, NE, Angelos worked for ashort time in a mid-size litigationfirm in Los Angelos, CA. However,he ultimately decided to combinehis legal background and his lovefor athletics and gravitatedtowards a career in intercollegiateathletics. During his under-graduate years at Brigham YoungUniversity in Provo, UT, Angeloswas the starting first baseman on the varsity squad. He laterplayed for one year in the Italianprofessional baseball league inUdine, Italy.

The 43-year old Angelos and hiswife, Kristin, have been marriedfor 20 years and keep busy withtheir six children, Alayna (16),Alexis (13), Abigail (10), Austin(8), Aaron (5), and Alivia (2).

Compliance

Florida Atlantic University’s Athletic Compliance Office functions within the realm of theUniversity’s compliance structure, coordinating, monitoring and verifying compliance and meetingall NCAA requirements. FAU is committed and compelled to the principle of institutional control inthe operation of its athletics department in a way that is constant within the rules andregulations of the NCAA and the University.

The Athletics Compliance Office commitment is to maintain control of its athletics programthrough responsible administrators, faculty and institutional bodies; to educate coaches, staff,student-athletes and other individuals involved with the athletics program of their institutionalresponsibilities under the rules; to develop operating systems within the athletics department andthe University that provide guidance in how to work within the rules; and to discover and reportany violations of the rules that occur. Each individual involved in intercollegiate athletics isobligated to maintain competency in knowledge of the rules; to act within his or her realm ofresponsibility in full compliance with the governing legislation; and to report any violation ofNCAA, conference and/or institutional rules of which he or she is aware.

As the University strives for excellence on and off the field of competition, the highest regard for ethical conduct must also be sought. In order for the athletic department to exist, outsideparticipation is required and must be emphasized. However, any inappropriate activity outside the rules and regulations of the NCAA could jeopardize the student-athlete’s eligibility to competeathletically. Everyone involved inside or outside the University must do his or her part in order to foster an environment that is supportive of the NCAA operating principle of competitive equity. Each person has a role and responsibility and has accountability when it comes to compliance ofNCAA rules and regulations.

FIVE RULES OF ATHLETIC COMPLIANCE1 Only coaches and athletic department staff members are permitted to be involved in the

recruiting process. Alumni, friends and “other representatives of athletic interest” who are not employed by the University are not permitted to contact a prospect (or members of theprospect’s family) by letter, telephone or in-person (on or off campus) for the purpose ofsoliciting their participation in the athletic program. FAU faculty members are permitted tohave contact with the prospects, but only while on the campus.

2 A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a Letter of Intent or financial aidagreement to attend the University. The prospect does not lose his/her prospect status untilthe start of classes at FAU or the beginning of official team practice prior to the start ofclasses.

3 The prohibition of contact with a prospect is intended to relate to unavoidable incidentalcontacts with a prospect by representatives of a member institution’s athletics interest. It isunderstood that such a contact is not prearranged by the athletics representative or an athleticdepartment staff member; is not made for the purpose of recruitment of the prospect: andinvolves only normal civility. For example, if you meet a high school student or junior collegestudent-athlete, you can talk with them about anything except FAU athletics. If you areattending a public function and find yourself talking to the parents of a prospect, you can talkabout anything that doesn’t relate to the athletic department.

4 If a student-athlete accepts any benefits or special consideration based on his or her status as an athlete or because of athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose all eligibility forintercollegiate athletic participation. Do not do anything for prospective or enrolled student-athletes without specific authorization from the FAU Athletic Compliance Office.

5 Representatives of athletic interest are reminded that NCAA rules regarding enrolled student-athletes remain in effect throughout the entire year, including summer breaks. When student-athletes complete their final season of eligibility, they must abide by NCAA rules until the end of that academic year and/or until they are no longer receiving athleticallyrelated financial aid.

THE TOM OXLEY ATHLETIC CENTER Tom Oxley, a local businessman, an FAU alum, and anavid polo enthusiast, stepped forward with a donationthat allowed the athletic center to become a reality. The 54,000-square-foot, state-of-art facility housesthe football locker room, training room, weight room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. But, it doesn’tstop there. The Oxley Center also opens its doors toindividual locker rooms for women’s track, soccer, softball and volleyball, as well as the respectivecoaches’ offices. The Athletics Director, andadministrative staff also call the Oxley Center home. All FAU students are privileged to use the computerstudy lab and classrooms. The facility overlooks thebaseball “B” field, the soccer game field, the softballstadium, the Boca Raton airport, and two footballpractice fields.

TENNIS COURTS The men’s tennis team, which ended the 2001 regular season with a No. 50 national ranking, anAtlantic Sun Championship, the first in a FAU men’s sport, and its second-consecutive trip to theNCAA tournament, makes use of two tennis facilities. The newly renovated FAU courts completethe athletic complex, with six lighted courts nestled between the baseball stadium, behind theaquatics area and next to the soccer game field. The men's and tennis teams call Patch Reef Parkhome, a facility that houses 17 lighted tennis courts and locker rooms for both teams. It is also apractice or tune-up facility for professional tennis players training for one of the many southFlorida tour events.

SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYING FIELD The completion of what is now called the“Game Field” – better known to thewomen’s soccer team as “Heaven” –concluded the 10-year development of fiveon-campus soccer fields, in conjunctionwith the Greater Boca Raton Beach TaxDistrict. FAU hosted the Atlantic SunConference Women’s Soccer Championshipin 2000 and 2003. The University has alsoserved as practice site for several inter-national teams, Team USA and the women’ssoccer professional combines.

BASEBALL STADIUM FAU’s baseball team, ranked as high as no. 8 nationally in 1999, is afforded the opportunityto practice on two full-dimension fields. Field “B” was the original home field for baseball, but with growing fan support, a new field was constructed in 1991. Plans are beingconsidered for a new stadium. The stadium field, which features AAA baseball lighting, isknown as the best playing surface in South Florida and recently received an endorsementfrom Cal Ripken. FAU fans enjoy the beach/picnic atmosphere along both foul lines wherebeach chairs, coolers and grills are a staple.

AQUATIC CENTER The swim team moved just yards away fromits 25-yard pool to an Olympic-size meterpool. The meter pool has hosted theIndependent Collegiate Conference SwimMeet and has served as the winter trainingfacility for hundreds of collegiate swimmers,as well as the training site for FAU’s men’sand women’s swim teams. The change to ameter pool was vital for the program tocontinue to attract Olympic swimmers to theteams. The pool also features a diving wellfor one and three meter events. The diveteam also uses the Coral Springs AquaticCenter for platform practice and competition.

GYMNASIUM The FAU Gymnasium opened its doors to women’s basketball in 1984; men’sbasketball and women’s volleyball wereadded in 1988. The facility seats 5,000 for games and houses locker rooms for two varsity teams.

FOOTBALL PRACTICE FIELDSTwo full-sized practice fields are overlookedby the Tom Oxley Athletic Center, and areused 12 months of the year. Room isavailable to add a astro-play surface.

SOFTBALL FIELD Through the assistance of FAU football, Hooters, Inc. and the State of Florida Title IX fund, the Lady Owls can continue their success inone of the best softball facilities in the country. FAU, which just captured its seventh-consecutive championship and its fifth-consecutiveregional appearance, plays on a palm tree-lined field complete with stadium, concession, press box and covered batting cage.
