PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Naturally there were a few anxious students this week with the commencement of the HSC
exams. A collective sigh of relief could be heard at the completion of Monday’s English Exam
Paper 1. Just a reminder to both students and parents that Year 12 need to allow ample time
to arrive at school prior to the start of each exam. It is imperative that students check their
individual HSC timetable.
Congratulations to Mr McKenzie and the Duke of Edinburgh students who successfully com-
pleted their first walk last weekend in conjunction with James Ruse High School. Year 7 will be
commencing their two minute fright festival project this week and these projects will be show-
cased on Friday 30th October 7-8.15 pm in the hall. An invitation will be forwarded to Year 7
parents.

GIFTED AND TALENTED DISCOVERY PROGRAM Ashfield Boys will be entering students into the University of Sydney's Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program. The aim of the University of Sydney’s Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program is to provide gifted, enthusiastic science students with the opportunity to be chal-lenged through hands-on experiments, interactive lectures and demonstrations, and to make friends with similar interests. The program will run during the July school holiday period each year for three days. Students can attend one workshop per year in Year 9 and 10 and then they will be invited back to a University wide workshop in Year 11. To qualify, students need to sit the Gifted and Talented Discovery Program Qualify-ing Exam to qualify for the program. Students in Years 8 and 9 this year are eligible to sit the exam that is held at the school in November. The top 10-15% of students are then invited to attend this competitive program. The exam is a 40-minute multiple-choice paper that consists of multiple choice ques-tions designed to test a student’s ability to solve scientific problems in the areas of biology, chemistry and physics.
On the weekend of 10th October, three students from Ashfield Boys High School attended their practice journey for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. Their hike consisted of a 22km bush walk from Hornsby to Berowra station over 2 days. They carried all their food, water, camping gear and other equipment throughout the journey, which was run as a combined schools event with James Ruse Agricultur-al High School.
Throughout the challenge, the students displayed cooperation, drive and deter-mination. They successfully completed the first of their two bushwalks despite the hot conditions and rough terrain. Well done to Howard Tan, Alan Trieu and Pranu Pathmendra.

Exploring Energy Resources
7 Poseidon examined various energy re-sources in Science last week. Students worked together in their lab groups to ob-serve how we can harness energy from earth’s resources such as the sun, wind, water and chemicals to produce electricity that can be used to make light, heat and noise.
This is a part of the current topic of Earth’s
Resources in Science.

Thankyou to the Year 8 students who presented on the library project, they are to
be commended on the standard of work.
I would like to encourage parents to pay the P&C levy. It is a voluntary payment of
$50 but it is an important way for us to fundraise and support the school with all its
projects such as the library redesign.
The P&C were given 4 family passes to the Ashfield Aquatic centre but they came
too late for us to use for the Trivia night so as an incentive the P&C has decided to
hold a random draw for parents who have paid their levies.
All levies need to be paid by the end of the month.
If you have any enquiries regarding this or anything else related to the P&C please
don't hesitate to contact us via our email [email protected].

VICE – CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE This has been the greatest week of my entire life! I know it'll sound clichéd or maybe
overdone after the many FB statuses out there regarding school and graduation. But
all of ABHS YEAR 12 CLASS OF 2015 have given me the memories for a lifetime this
past week and it really makes me sad that I won't be able to regularly study with you
guys and hang out at school. I love you all and couldn't have imagined passing with-
out the help and mutual respect we as Ashfield boys have had for each other over
the past 6 years. To all teachers and staff who helped me become the person I am today, I thank each
and every one of you. Mr. T, as our Year Advisor, you have become a source of
laughter, respect and admiration for all of us and I can say without feeling embar-
rassed that I truly respect you as a father figure and leader, giving each student your
full attention like one of your own. I had so much fun at the Formal. How good were all our dance moves! Congratula-
tions to the recipient of the Year 12 Silly Awards. Thank you to all staff who pre-
pared our farewell breakfast at Ashfield Park. Graduation was amazing and I was
honoured to start the leaving procession. Well done to all those that received
awards! And to Sam Phillips who had to go all out and offer up his free time to host a
leaving party; thanks so much Sam, I love you like a brother. I know we've had upsets and trouble along the way, you might be feeling over-
whelmed about the HSC (trust me I know) but I want you to know that whatever you
choose to do, I'll be there supporting you as your Vice-Captain and Khaled as Cap-
tain, I’m sure of it! Work hard to achieve your dreams!

WHAT’s the CHANCE?
Currently 7Kratos have been learning about probability, in particular the language in-
volved in this topic. For example, Probability occurs only between 0 and 1, so where on
the scale would you put chance words such as unlikely, impossible, certain, probably etc.
Another aspect of the language is the meaning and
understanding of: ‘at least’, ‘at most’, ‘between 2
and 7’ etc.
How is this used….When a coin is tossed twice, what
is the probability of getting at least two Tails?
In a world of technology
and all that it brings with
Xbox, Minecraft etc. very
few students knew the
make-up of the cards in a
52 pack of cards, so the stu-
dents have also been
exposed to a new experience.
Lastly, students have engaged in group work to
choose which spinner or draw a spinner that satis-
fies a set of probability conditions.
Students in 7Hermes created their own spinners.
