UV21157Principles of carrying out periodic room servicing and deep cleaningThe aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding to carry out periodic room servicing and deep cleaning of rooms. You will focus on turning mattresses, high dusting, cleaning carpet edges, skirting boards and paintwork and vacuuming under furniture.

You will learn the importance of following a schedule to undertake periodic room servicing and inspecting work to ensure that it meets the required quality standards for the appearance and cleanliness of rooms.

You will also learn about the preparations needed to carry out cleaning, the equipment and material needed and the health and safety responsibilities involved.

Periodic room servicing and deep cleaning activities: High dusting, vacuuming under furniture and carpet edges, turning mattresses, changing soft furnishings (including blankets, bedspreads), changing or vacuuming curtains and drapes, cleaning skirting boards and other paintwork, cleaning air vents and extractors, cleaning light fittings.

Importance of following a schedule: Achieve required quality and cleanliness standards, improve efficiency, control of labour costs, maintenance and upkeep of furniture and fittings, so that rooms are cleaned in time and fit for guests to occupy them, ensure all jobs are completed, staff know what they are doing, staff know when to complete tasks, staff motivation and performance.

Importance of inspecting the work: Ensure area has been cleaned to the required standard, customer satisfaction, quality control, to monitor staff performance, reduce complaints.

Quality standards: According to the requirements of the organisation, clean and in good repair to meet guest’s satisfaction, attention to detail (hospitality tray tidy and containing a standard amount of tea, coffee, milk and sugar, stationery not dog-eared and stain free, dust free, stain free and crease free bedding and furnishings), meeting health and safety obligations, giving the guest the impression of a ‘new’ product.

Procedures for dealing with items that need to be replaced: Reporting to the necessary person (manager, maintenance, housekeeper), completing necessary documentation, obtaining/ordering necessary stock, following company procedure, keeping records.

Procedures for dealing with items that have been replaced: Maintaining and inspecting new items in line with organisation guidelines, appropriate recycling/disposal of replaced item.

Preparations: Checking requirements of task (equipment and materials to use, schedule of cleaning, any health and safety requirements), wear appropriate protective clothing, gathering appropriate materials and equipment, protecting vulnerable surrounding areas (covering, moving out of the way), moving furniture to clean underneath.

Importance of preparations: Ensure understanding of the requirements of the job, to prevent damage to surrounding furniture, fittings and soft furnishes, to prevent accidents, so that the job can be completed efficiently.

Equipment and materials:

Materials – polish, glass cleaner, sanitiser, multi-surface cleaner, detergent, air freshener, carpet shampoo, stain removers, bleach, washing-up liquid, floor stripper.

Manual equipment – mops, buckets, colour-coded cloths, dusters, sponge, brushes, dustpans.

Electrical – vacuum cleaners, polishers, scrubbers, spray extractors.

General – attachments and fittings, warning signs.

Procedures for using equipment and materials efficiently and safely: Follow manufacturer’s instructions, comply with current health and safety legislation and training (manual handling, control of substances hazardous to health, wearing personal protective equipment), check that the equipment is in good order, report any damage or breakdown to an appropriate person.

Health and safety requirements for high dusting: Follow guidance given during training, use of appropriate equipment to get too hard to reach places (vacuum attachments, long-handled dusters, step ladder), removing the dust from the area with a vacuum cleaner, wear appropriate protective clothing.
