1. Definition of principle of expansion and contraction of matter.

2. Example of principle of expansion and contraction of matter.

3. Problem in our daily life.4. Example of problems solving in our daily life that applied principle of expansion and

contraction of a matter.

5. Example of apparatus or material that use principle of expansion and contraction of a matter.

6. Sources that I find to do this power point.

As materials warm up, the particle model of matter says that their particles movefaster and spread apart. We expect substances to expand (increase in volume) as

their temperature rises. Falling temperature means that average particle motion is

slowing down. It seems logical to expect substances to contract (decrease in

volume) as they cool .

Most matter expand when heated and contract when cooled. The increase in size of

objects when they are hot is called expansion. The decrease in size when they are

cooled is called contraction.

Rollers in concrete and steel bridges

Concrete bridges and steel bridges have rollers on one end to allow for

expansion on hot days and cold days.

Gaps In Railway Tracks

Gaps are left in between sections of rails to allow for the expansion of the rails

during very hot weather .

Wire cables expand and contract

The wires cable will become longer after it expand , while it will become itoriginal size when it contract

Hard to open a tight cap

Hard to separate metal lid on container

The big metal ball hard to go through the metal ring

Opening a tight cap

The cap can be removed easily by dipping it into hot water for a few minutes. This

is because the cap expands when it is heated by the hot water and became loose.

Separating metal lid on container

We can use the expansion and contraction principle anywhere you need to separatetwo materials; one of the materials should be made of metal. For instance, if you

had a tight metal lid on a container, you could heat the lid, which would expand it;

hence, ease its removal.

Trying to put the metal ball into the metal ringWe can heat the iron heat to make it bigger so that the metal ball able to pass

through it.

Mercury in glass thermometer1. A mercury in glass thermometer works on the expansion and contraction of mercury in

the bulb of the thermometer.

2. When the thermometer is used to measure the temperature of a hot object, the mercury inthe bulb expands and forces the mercury in the glass tube to go up.

3. When the thermometer is used to measure the temperature of a cold object, the mercury

in the bulb contracts and the mercury in the glass tube goes down.

Bimetallic Strip in Fire Alarm

1. A bimetallic strip is made of two different metal strip, such us copper and iron.

2. Copper expands faster than iron when heated.

3. The forces that arise due to en equal expansion of the two metals cause the bimetallic

strip to bend.4. Bimetallic strips are used as automatic switches in fire alarms and as thermostats in

electrical appliances such as iron, air-conditioners, rice cookers and refrigerators to keepthe temperature in these appliances constant.
