Principal’s welcome message

Parents and Carers

It doesn’t seem long since I last wrote to

mid-way through their ‘100 Day revision

strategy’. It seems every break, lunchtime

and after school is crammed with extra

intervention classes and support.

This edition of the Insight shows the rich

diversity of experiences and achievements

of our students, including the Ski Trip and

New York Trip; a barnstorming ‘Upload

Live’, AS and A Level Music and Drama

performances, and many sporting

successes. Also this term, many of our

students participated in the BBC Young

Reporters scheme with a varied range of

news items. Continued on page 2..

Guild parent focus group

Next meeting: 21st March (6pm)

The Guild parent focus group is a

Revision page

We have been regularly updating

our revision page to provide our

students and parents with support

during the run-up to exam season.

Useful information includes…

Easter revision sessions

Revision booklets

Parent revision strategies

Useful websites and revision

guides

100 revision plan

If you require any further support

or have any questions then please get in contact.

Principal’s welcome message continued…

In a sporting vein, there have been numerous successes including record breaking swimming performances,

county success in girls’ cricket, strong performances at rugby 7 tournaments, not to mention the customary

ritual thrashing of our local rivals on the football pitch. I am daily amazed by talented young people in the

Academy who have achieved with distinction in their own disciplines. Several students have taken principal

parts in performances in Bristol theatres; we have students participating in National Championships in a range

of sports, and several highly talented students still continue to represent their countries at national level.

This Easter break there will be many examination preparation activities; we have emailed the schedule to

parents, if you haven’t received this please let us know. This is a very stressful time for students and in our next

PSHE drop-down day on 20 April we will be supporting year 11 with a range of activities from revision strategies

to using meditation and yoga to reduce the stress. I would also like to pay tribute to my colleagues for their

dedication to getting our students the best results.

As you all know, I will be leaving Winterbourne at the end of the summer. I am sad to go, but there is never a

good time to leave a school (www.trfwia.org.uk/news/announcement-regarding-our-principal). I firmly believe

that I have steered the Academy through some very rough seas to a period of relative calm. Our examination

result predictions are strong, the applications for year 7 leave us vastly oversubscribed and the Academy is in

safe hands with Adam Williams the new CEP at the helm. As you might imagine the events of this academic

year have been challenging and stressful for me as Principal and so it is for personal reasons I have decided to

resign. I want to thank parents and students for so many messages of support and I wish the Academy every

success as it presses on to become outstanding and excellent in every respect.

WIA Ski Trip

30 WIA students and 4 staff

members enjoyed a ski trip to San

Sicario, Northern Italy in February.

Every day we saw the most

amazing progress and enthusiasm

from our students, they were a

true asset to the Academy.

In the evenings we had a broad

range of activities lined up, which

the students threw themselves

into; these included a quiz night

(which was won by the 6th form

students), tobogganing, a massive

snow ball fight, pizza night (see

attached photo) and even a disco

with another school.

Message from The Friends of WIA

We would like to thank all the parents that took the time to fill out our online questionnaire and we have decided our

main area of focus for fundraising will be the outdoor facilities at the Academy.

We believe that with the fantastic building, it would be great for our children to have an improved outdoor

setting. Recently we have also funded First Aid Training for over 50 students from our Sixth Form. Due to demand

we agreed to fund an additional day so that all the interested Students had a chance to benefit from the training!

Please get involved with The Friends of WIA!. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 13th April at 7:30pm

and will be held in the sports hall. In the meantime, if you have any ideas or suggestions, you can email us at the

following address: [email protected]

INSET Day reminder for 2016-17

On 10th March our students took
