Visit from our New Regional Director The new Regional Director of South Western Region; Sharyne Donald visited our school last week. The School Captains and Vice Captains gave her a tour of our school and spoke fondly of their time at Belmont High School. She asked them many questions about the learning programs, the opportunities that students are given and the way the school helps build relationships and engagement. She was very impressed with the responses and it helped give her a great sense of the positive culture of our school. Ms Donald also visited Middle Years classes and observed students completing their rich task. I was pleased to see students focusing on their learning and being challenged by their work. Ms Donald made a number of very positive comments about our school and our students and teachers. Swimming Carnival This was my first time at our Swimming Carnival and the best one that I have attended in all my time as an educator. The spirit of our House System is clearly seen with students taking the time to dress in their House colours and cheer for their fellow students while they were competing. Many of our students took on leadership roles during the day and our staff worked cohesively to ensure that the events ran to schedule and the program was enjoyed by all. I would like to congratulate all the students that participated in the swimming events and to all the students, staff and parents who attended and participated in some way to make the experience very special for all . It was a very close finish with Gold House winning overall. Well done to all Gold House Sports Captains, students, teachers and the new House Leader Ms Linda Jennings. Year 7 Camp The Year 7 students are very settled in their classes. There have been two Year 7 groups complete their camp at Tanybryn. Students have enjoyed the many planned activities during their camp. Both students and staff have enjoyed their time together with a strong focus on building positive relationships and the confidence of our new students. Sandra Eglezos Principal

Purple Ponderings Welcome to 2017! A warm welcome back to the wonderful students of Purple House, and a special mention to our new students at every year level. First day back for students and the Year 12s headed off to camp. The students used the time to work together as a group in order to plan and prepare for the year ahead. They thought about their goals for the year and their role as leaders of the school. It was great to see them begin to work together, step out of their comfort zones, and come up with some good ideas for the year. Congratulations to all members of the Year 12 Purple Leadership team and especially to Joseph Doggett-William and Jess Harcomb on becoming our House Cap-tains and Bailey Hannah and Mia Paulus on being voted in as Vice-Captain. Congratulations also to Zane Thompson and Katrina Anastasopoulos on taking on the role of Sports Captains, and to Beth Hamer on her position as Music Captain. We had a GREAT day at the Swimming Carnival and came 3rd overall! There were many students who did exceptionally well and swam in a heap of races – we had two Age Champions – Sarah Davey and Jett Flexman – and lots of kids who were right up there earning points for the House. We also had a large number of students who stepped up on the day and swam in races to help the team – which is wonderful to see. We have lots more to plan for before the end of term – the Year 7s are going on camp and having a meet and greet BBQ, the Form captains are leading tour groups during the BHS open night, and we will all participate in the Fun Run on the last day of term. Welcome back everyone and here’s to another wonderful year at BHS! Nellie Wilson Purple House Leader

SUCCEEDING IN THE VCE—free lectures for Year 11 and 12 students “Succeeding in the VCE” is an annual event designed to provide students with the skills and information they need to maximise VCE marks, and to raise much needed funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation. A variety of lectures will be available to choose from. Valued at over $250, these highly beneficial lectures are free of charge to students when they make a $10 donation to The Fred Hollows Foundation representatives on the day. Lectures are held at The University of Melbourne on 25th February, 4th March and 5th March. Bookings are essential. Enrolments: www.tsfx.com.au/svce or call 9663 3311.

THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA The thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November last year was a sobering and sad reminder of the potential impacts of asthma. Although uncommon, thunderstorm asthma has occurred previously in Australia and overseas and its mechanisms are understood however are very difficult to predict. Click here for more in-formation on Thunderstorm Asthma. With a prevalence level of 11% (1 in 9) in Australia and over 400 deaths each year, asthma needs to be taken seriously by all in a duty of care position. Asthma Australia’s training helps school staff to develop skills and confidence to admin-ister Asthma First Aid in case of an asthma attack. This training also addresses asthma management processes in schools and the relevant guidelines and legislation. If a thunderstorm asthma event were to occur during school hours and you were faced with students having trouble

breathing (whether known to have asthma or not), you would follow the Asthma First Aid protocol taught in the training for each student. This includes calling an ambulance for any student having a suspected first asthma attack. It is vital that school processes ensure that Asthma Emergency Kits (available through your local Asthma Foundation) are always properly stocked and medication is checked to ensure it has not run out and is in date. Students likely to be most at risk of thunderstorm asthma would include those,

with a history of hay fever (80% of people with asthma also experience hay fever)

allergic to grass (in particular) and pollen (generally)

not currently using an asthma preventer (if prescribed)

Thunderstorm asthma can affect some people who have never been diagnosed with asthma. Our survey following the thunderstorm asthma event showed that 4 in 10 people did not have a previous history of asthma. This is why it is im-portant you can recognize the signs and symptoms of asthma and know how to administer asthma first aid. As always, following your Asthma Australia training, there are staff available at your local Asthma Foundation to assist with all asthma issues for your school.

GOLD HOUSE Wow! What a fabulous start to the year.

As the new GOLD House Leader, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Belmont High School community and the GOLD House family. It is with great pleasure that I can let GOLD House parents and guardians know that I have been very impressed with the student body who have displayed outstanding commitment to their learning and school activities. We have begun the year in fine form with a win at the Swim Carnival! It was fantastic to be a part of the team spirit with a large number of participants who were well supported by our GOLD spectators. A big thank you goes to our GOLD House Swim Managers: Mr Westwood and Ms Watson who ensured that we could fill nearly every event!

The Year 12 students also displayed their commitment to GOLD House by supporting younger students in the sign up for events. The Year 12 students dressed to impress and have set a high standard for the upcoming Athletics Carnival! They certainly followed through on their reflections and goals that were outlined while they attended the Yr 12 Leadership Camp in the first week of school at Anglesea. The camp included a range of initiative and team building activities, as well as providing students with a positive environment to prepare for the year ahead. Whilst on camp, our Year 12 Leadership Team was established. Congratulations to the following students on their appointments: House Captains – Joe Kelly and Elise Brown Vice Captains – Bowen Jacques and Akaansha Kumar Sport Captains – Zeke Lehmann and Isabelle Banovac Music Captain – Harry Whatnall and Debating Captain – Nathan McGlynn I would also like to welcome new and returning families, as well as introduce our form teachers for 2017: Year 7 – Mr Mackenzie Year 8 – Mr Stockton & Ms Morse Year 9 – Ms Todorovic Year 10 - Ms. Watson (Assistant House Leader) Year 11 - Ms. Hergstrom Year 12 – Ms deBruyn and Ms. Harvey. All form teachers and students, will be supported by Mr. Westwood, Ms. Wood and Ms. Hook. Mr Mackenzie has done a fantastic job transitioning our Year 7’s to the pace of High School. Students have been flat out, both in and out of the classroom. I am really looking forward to our Year 7 Camp down at Tanybryn starting on the 28 th Feb. We will be also having a welcome BBQ for Year 7 students and their families at Eastern Beach on the 15 th March (5.30pm) combined with Mango and Purple House. Please do not hesitate to contact myself with any questions you may have as I have been very well supported by Ms Jess Watson as the GOLD House Assistant and previous GOLD House Leaders, Ms Jess Grigg and Ms Amanda Brown who have demonstrated that BHS always puts students first to ensure their success and happiness.

SILVER HOUSE REPORT We have had a flying start to the year with so many things happening all in a rush. Year 12 Camp at Camp Angahook was

wonderful with our Year 12s considering and taking seriously the important role of leading the whole House for the first time.

Personally, for me it was a great time to get to meet everyone in Year 12. It was wonderful to see the special bond and friendships

that obviously exist within the group. Congratulations to our Leaders Chloe Reynolds and Robbie Dando (House Captains)

Olivia Crichton and Aydin Dalipi (Sports Captain). Evan Maltby and Anja Castle Music and Debating Captains Also

congratulations to our Vice Captains Angus Davies, Bre MacGee and Jade Southwood. All the Year 12s agreed to the idea of

supporting the sense of ‘family’ that exists within the House and hoped to build on this through participation and building

connections .

House Swimming This year Silver managed to raise their effort to achieve improvement moving into 6th place overall. The girls faired better with Girls coming 4th and the Senior Girls 3rd. Participation was up in the girls division, which was pleasing and we had some outstanding individual efforts. Congratulations go to our two age champions. Cameron Reid 20 year Boys and Tegan Vaotangi, the 14 year Girls champions. There were many great efforts from our students, who demonstrated the virtue of House spirit, proving that the Silver House is, and will remain strong throughout the year and beyond. Congratulations to Emily Adams, Hannah Vejzovic, Davy Mckenzie, Olivia Crichton, Bec Bowker, Robbie Dando, Jade Bartz, Madi Brown, Hero Partos-Slattery, Grace Emond, Millie Hobbs and Molly Greenwood who were all outstanding on the day. Congratulations also go to Bri-annah McCullough (8S) and Noah Metwally (7S) who won prizes for best costume on the day. It has been a busy month and I have really enjoyed working with the dedicated Silver staff members and have really felt wel-comed by the Silver students as the new Silver House leader. I look forward to coming into classrooms in the coming weeks to spend more time getting to know all of you.

BOOK REVIEW Emmy Laybourne’s “Monument 14” A visiting librarian recommended this book to us and it’s been incredibly popular since we bought it. In the not-so-distant future, Dean and his little brother Alex are on their way to school in Monument, Colorado on their different buses. Suddenly gigantic hailstones start to fall and Dean’s bus crashes. The other bus driver comes to rescue Dean the few other students on the high school bus. She delivers 14 kids to a store like a Super WalMart - where they sell everything from dinners to diamonds - then tells them to stay there while she goes to get help. Fortunately the store’s TVs still work and the kids, aged 5-17, discover that the hailstones were a minor part of the problem. The bigger issues are the tsunami, earthquake and chemicals in the air which cause different reactions depending on your blood type!! The kids wisely decide to barricade themselves inside the store and wait for help and/or grownups to arrive. This is book 1 in the trilogy – I’ve now read all 3 and thankfully the final book wraps everything up satisfactorily. Books are reviewed weekly and displayed in the library. Lee Suter, Teacher Librarian

THE LANGUAGES CORNER

Homestay Families Wanted We are looking for families to host students from Padua (pictured below), Italy, for approximately 2 weeks at the start of Term 3. Hosting would be particularly beneficial for students learning Italian in senior years (what a great opportunity for them to improve their language skills!). Other students would also benefit by getting to know someone from a different culture. If you are interest-ed, please email [email protected].

New Colombo Plan and Life-long Language Learning With learning being a life-long journey, it is important to consider options to continue language learning after high school. Stu-dents of Indonesian can take advantage of the New Colombo Plan, a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region. This initiative involves a scholarship program for study of up to one year and internships or mentorships, and a flexible mobility grants program for both short and longer-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research. This initiative is aimed at generating cultural insight to deepen Australia’s trade, economic and services links with Asia, with 10,000 students who have already been supported to study in 32 countries. However, despite this initiative and other similar policies aimed at increasing bilingualism in the country, Australia is still currently behind: a recent article in The Sunday Age (‘Students heading east, not west’, 05/02/17) stressed that ‘in almost all OECD coun-tries, students finish high school with a foreign language except Australia and just 10 per cent of students here are studying a foreign language, compared with 40 per cent in the 1960s. Being able to communicate with a language other than English is an important skills for the 21st century, and all of our students are encouraged to pursue language studies in senior years. Students wondering whether to continue studying Indonesian or Ital-ian past year 9 should not hesitate to get in touch with their teachers to know more about the benefits of keeping up their lan-guage skills.
