I want to encourage our parents to enroll your child in one of our academies or our AVID program at SAHS. AVID is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges and universities. Students will begin enrolling for the 2018-2019 school year in January. The AVID system has accelerated student learning, and acted as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. At the secondary grade levels (grades 6-12), AVID is an approved elective course taken during the school day. Students are usually selected to enroll in an AVID class after an application process. For one class period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Students enrolled in AVID are typically required to enroll in at least one of their school’s most rigorous academic classes, such as Honors or Advanced Placement, AICE, in addition to the AVID Elective. As students progress in AVID, their self-images improve, and they become academically successful students, leaders, and role models for other students. AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but are falling short of reaching their potential. AVID places students into AICE, AP and Honors courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. Parents, I would like to congratulate our 2017-2018 Rookie Teacher of the Year (Ms. Dempsey Hall) and our 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year (Mr. Mike Beaman)! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to our students at SAHS. Attention Seniors!!! Grad Bash and your senior activities are in the near future! Continue to work hard and finish strong!!! Principal’s Notes Yellow Jacket Family, we are off to a Great start of the 2018 year! I want to encourage our parents to enroll your child in one of our academies or our AVID program at SAHS.
