Principal’s Newsletter 16th March 2018 Dear Parents and Carers, It’s been fantastic weather for the swimming program and so good to see so many students participating. I would like to thank all of our parent helpers and volunteers who make it possible to provide 1:1 support to develop water safety skills. School Council Elections: Ballot 2018 Welcome to the new school councillors who have been elected for a two-year term. To Ritu Sharma and Tim Hilton who fill the DET vacancies, thank you for your commitment. The parent vacancies were keenly contested and as a result of a ballot, I would like to congratulate Emily Kiefel and Sean O’Mahoney. Beverly Emmett will fill the casual vacancy. We look forward to your contribution on School Council to make a difference to the lives of the students, staff and parents. The Annual General Meeting of Warringa Park School will be held before the first meeting of the new school council in the staffroom on Monday 19th March at 6:30pm. Reports from the President, Principal and Treasurer will be presented and there will be an election of office bearers prior to the meeting of the new school. The Annual Report will be posted on the school’s web site and there will be a number of hard copies available at the office for those parents who like to have access to a hard copy. The Annual report will also be available via the school’s app. Student Support Groups These meetings have been taking place this week following draft Individual Learning Plans being sent home. If you have not yet made a time to attend one of these meetings I would strongly encourage you to do so. Student Representative Council The student leaders have been elected and they will receive their badges at the Whole School Assembly on the last day of term. The school highly values the student voice and the election booth was an exciting place to be as students from across the campuses voted last Monday. The positions were keenly contested. Harmony Day On Tuesday 27th March we will again be celebrating Harmony Day. The theme this year is the elimination of racism and it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our cultural diversity. Today we participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and students had the opportunity to use the visual arts to imagine a world free from bullying. Principal’s Newsletter 16th March 2018Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been fantastic weather for the swimming program and so good to see so many students participating. I would like to thank all of

our parent helpers and volunteers who make it possible to provide 1:1 support to develop water safety skills.

School Council Elections: Ballot 2018Welcome to the new school councillors who have been elected for a two-year term.

It is important for parents to gain an understanding of the learning goals being made for their child for the year and for teachers to gain understanding of the expectations of

parents.

Student Representative CouncilThe student leaders have been elected and they will receive their badges at the Whole School Assembly on the last day of term. The school highly values the student voice and the election booth was an exciting place to be as students from across the campuses voted last Monday. The positions were keenly contested.

Harmony DayOn Tuesday 27th March we will again be celebrating Harmony Day. The theme this year is the elimination of racism and it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our cultural diversity. Today we participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and students had the opportunity to use the visual arts to imagine a world free from bullying. The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has written to every school in Australia with this message - ‘Bullying and violence has no place in Australia’ and it’s one that we concur with at this school

the cover remains on at all times.

End of TermThe end of the term is approaching quickly. School will break up on Thursday 29th March at 2:30pm and resume on Monday April 16th. You are also invited to the end of term assembly on Thursday 29th March at 9:30am where there will be performances and awards presented.

is planning week so there will be no Specialist classes running, and in week 9 Harmony Day will be on Tuesday 27th March. Events will be held across

the school to celebrate this important day with an interactive celebration and focus on Aboriginal Art and Culture from the group ‘True Culture’. In the lead up the end of term students have been painting flags and welcome words in various languages for a mural and individual student works on cardboard that will form part of a colourful Rainbow Serpent. On the day, Gavin will lead multicultural drumming in Harmony Square and a bouncing castle will run all day in Dark Blue Zone. SRC students will run activities addressing ‘No Racism’ themes and Mareta will run a Harmony Day Photo Booth in Multimedia. We will send out more information and a timetable as the day approaches.

And it will be a sad day on Tuesday as it will be Oren’s last day at Warringa Park before he goes home to Canada. We wish Oren all the best and thanks for the incredible dedication and knowledge he has bought to educating our students over the years.

Andrew, Ruth, Brian, Gavin, Kacey, Emilia, Paul, P.K, Oren, Mareta, Melody and Catherine.

WellbeingToday is National Day of Action Against Bullying and the students will work today on an art piece to represent Friendship. Bullying is an important topic to cover with students and developing students’ understanding on how to develop friendships and strategies in standing up to bullying is vital.

A number of the SRC students attended the Wyndham Youth Forum this week and participated in community discussions around topics such as disability, mental health, student pathways and opportunities. The SRC will be announced and presented with their badges at the end of term assembly on Thursday of week 9. The school are hosting

our third Respectful Relationships Community of Practice on Monday where we will welcome staff from eight local schools and work together on ensuring we are supporting staff in the delivery of this program. Teachers are planning the delivery of this program for Term 2 during next week’s planning week and we will be looking at the next two topics Positive Coping and Problem Solving.

Jobsupport Information Session 2018

Are you interested in finding out more about work experience or employment for your son or daughter when they leave school? If so, Jobsupport would like to invite you to an information session. When: Friday 18th May 2018

Where: Meet us at Moonee Valley Racecourse – in the Member’s Car park (entry off McPherson St, opposite Coats St)

What time: Meet at 11.00am for a brief presentation about Jobsupport and a light lunch.

What will happen:

Meet some other families who’ve been through the transition from school to work and hear their stories.

After lunch, we’ll take you on guided tour of two work places. You’ll get to see some young people who Jobsupport have helped to get a job. No need to drive yourself, just sit back and relax.

After the guided tour, we will take you back to Moonee Valley Racecourse, where you can pick up your car and head home. We’ll probably be back to the Racecourse by 3.30pm - 4.00pm.

Even if you think you know what you’d like to do once you’ve left school, come along anyway.

It’s always good to know what options are out there for you.
