Deputy Principals Report

Both Ms Caws and I can scarcely believe that we have reached the end of the term! Our school has had so much happen over the term! The sheer volume of opportunities offered in fields as diverse as sports, creative arts, public speaking and endless competitions is unlike any school that both of us have worked in. During the early stages of Term 2, our attention will once again turn to subject selection. Our Year 8 students will get their first opportunities to choose the subjects that they study. Our Year 10 students will begin the very detailed process of choosing their senior courses. There are some very big decisions ahead! The start of Term 2 usually ushers in the first of the cool weather. Please ensure that your children have correct school uniform. Hoodies and other generic jackets are not school uniform. Please help support the school in this matter. Part of our school discipline system involves Loss of Privileges. Put simply, if students are not following school rules, they lose their ability to participate in school sporting, performing arts and co-curricular events and attend school functions such as graduations and formals. It is a serious step that normally follows a warning and a number of conversations. One of the biggest challenges facing school administrators across the world is the influence of social media and mobile devices on children. Specifically, the use of social media to harass or ridicule other students, and the ongoing distraction that mobile devices tend to create. We would ask parents to help us manage this issue by closely monitoring their children’s use of mobile devices. Clear boundaries and rules can prevent serious issues. There are very clear rules around those devices at school. Also, please remember that our school takes no responsibility for the loss or damage of mobile devices. They are brought at your own risk. Both Ms Caws and I would like to thank you for your ongoing support during Term 1 and hope that students have a lovely break. Mr Harvie and Ms Caws

A warm welcome to all of our families! The Learning Support Team consists of Mrs Nicole Birch (Learning and Support Teacher Years 7 – 9), Mrs Jodie Small (Learning and Support Teacher Years 10 – 12) and our two wonderful School Learning Support Officers - Mrs Kylee Boland and Mrs Julie Montgomery. The team also includes Mrs McCormick (Head Teacher of Teaching and Learning), Ms Annette Quiney (Head Teacher Welfare) under the guidance of Ms Caws (DP Years 7, 9, and 11). “The Zone” is the Learning and Support room which is located on the bottom level of H block. It is open every lunchtime during the first half of lunch with the exception of Wednesday Week A. It is staffed by our Learning and Support Teachers; Mrs Birch and Mrs Small. It is an area, where students can come and have a chat, play board games or seek assistance for assessments. It has been a busy start to the year for the team. All Year 7 and new students to GPHS were assessed by members of the Learning Support Team in reading, comprehension, spelling and writing. The MultiLit (Making Up For Lost Time In Literacy) program commenced with two groups of students from Years 7 and 8 and in our support unit. We have also supported students during class assessments. In the Senior Years, we are supporting students in their Study periods by providing feedback and suggestions on study habits and assessments. Disability Provisions applications and assessments continue to be finalised for our Year 12 students who may need additional support to access their HSC exams. If you have any concerns about your child’s learning, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Birch or Mrs Small.

Extension History

Some extra-keen Year 11 students, Victoria Cina and Sarah Pamplin, accompanied Ms Bryant, Mr Bartolo, and Ms Horton to the State Library in Sydney on a Sunday late Term 4 2015 to undertake research for their Extension History projects.

Also along for the ride were three studious Year 10 students: Kimberley Sagar, Kodee Thomas and Yasmin Zelko, who undertook a wide range of reading for personal interest and pre-senior subject preparation.

Pictured is a famous boar statue which transfers luck onto whoever touches it's shiny nose - but with such an enthusiastic attitude towards their studies, luck wont be needed!

Chess Team

Glenmore Park High School's Chess Team took to their first competition at Penrith High School on Friday 26th of February like Knights to a chessboard, out-manoeuvring their opponents with much wit and enthusiasm.

The team consisted of Mitchell Dixon and Jacob Ellston of Year 12, and Bailey Lalor-Furness and Adam Stewart of Year 9. GPHS held its own against several more experienced teams, placing 5th out of 6 teams after a succession of high-pressure clock-timed games, and Adam Stewart took home the best team player medal for his score of 3 points against 7 opponents.

Students interested in joining the team should see Mr Bartolo or come along to the chess-playing sessions held in H12 on Thursday lunches.

Year 7

Dear Year 7 Parents and caregivers, Term one has been a busy first term for our Year 7 students. Our munchkins have quickly mastered the skills of navigating a bigger schooling environment, braved making new friends, learned to read their complex timetables, joined various teams and clubs, and learned (almost) all their teachers’ names. They have also participated in their first swimming carnival, with record numbers of Year 7 students both attending and participating on the day. After a few turned up slightly nervous, the grade attended their first camp as a whole year group, and had a wonderful time challenging themselves on the activities and meeting new peers. The Year 7 camp was a highlight for us as Year Advisors because Ms Ritchie and I got to know our year group really well over those few days, and really look forward to our next six years ahead. We are very proud of all of our Year 7 students and the way they have settled into high school, showing great maturity and positivity. We are looking forward to many more busy terms ahead, and are so proud to see that our year group have transitioned through the first term hurdle with smiles still on their faces. Senior Leadership

During Week 10 of Term 1, on Wednesday 30th March, the Senior Leadership Team ran the Shave for a Cure Foundation Fundraiser. We had a barbecue at lunch, a hair spray stall staffed by our Leaders, and a shave station kindly organised and assisted by Mr Panaoli. Together we raised $316 for the Leukemia Foundation, with a huge thanks to Kylaughan Delforce for raising $115 of that in sponsorship for his own shave. Thank you to all who were involved in the day, and we look forward to more success with the event next year. Ms Katie Ritchie SLT Co-ordinator

Swimming Carnival

Glenmore Park High School has an amazing sporting culture and we take pride in our students who compete on behalf of our school. This term has seen some incredible results on the sporting field, but it’s been in the pool where our students have thrived. On Monday 22nd February, GPHS took approximately 54 students to represent the school at the Zone Swimming carnival. The results were fantastic, our boys placed 1st overall in points, and our school placed a very close 4th. Twelve students went on to represent the school at the Sydney West Swimming carnival on Monday 14th March, where again, we achieved some outstanding results. Our boy’s 6 x 50m freestyle relay team placed a close 2nd, Joshua Auld placed 1st in 100m breaststroke and 3rd in 100m backstroke. Abbi Williams placed 3rd in 100m backstroke. This group of students then competed at the NSW CHS Swimming Carnival early April. We would like to wish all of them the very best and congratulate the students who represented the school in a positive sporting manner. Mrs Elford PDHPE

Earlier this term, after months of planning, and consultation with the staff

and students, the Research/Non Fiction area of our library was brought

into the 21st Century. We have a range of flexible seating and tables, and

our desktop computers have been replaced with laptops and iPads. The

aim is to provide a space which will cater for the different teaching and

learning styles of our students and staff. Responses have been very

positive – students love the colour and the option to choose individual or

collaborative seating, while teachers have been keen to change the

space to suit their lessons.
