Time, as ever, is moving very quickly and we are now looking at mid-term report cards. Since last I wrote to you I would like to bring you upto date on what is happening in the board and of course, at Loyola. Thenew school is moving along at what seems, record speed! It will be a stateof the art building with the latest of technologies as well as all the latestgreen initiatives. We are still slated to open September 2012. In general,we have had a very smooth start up at Loyola and all the schools in theboard. We are still considered a growth board but as you know we areseeing decline in the south, east and west Mississauga. The good news iswe are over projections in many of my elementary schools which is greatnews. So for the over 85,000 students and over 10,000 employees thishas been a very good start. We are continuing to retain over 96% of ourstudents from grade 8 to grade 9. Our Full Day Learning is to capacitywith some students on waiting lists. We are seeing a steady flow ofstudents who are moving to the Catholic system which is a recognition ofthe value of Catholic education.

This September, we have begun the full implementation of the NewHealthy Food Policy in our secondary and elementary schools; asignificant change for many in our daily practice. More information willbe forthcoming as we work through this year. Trustees also approved apolicy on school fees that is shaping our practice starting this September.More information on this subject will be coming your way. We are alsogathering information around school fundraising and along with theMinistry of Education will be formulating a new fundraising policy forschools in the near future.

One of our largest investments this year is in the hiring ofa total of 37.5 qualified individuals to better service ouridentified students as Education Resource Workers. Ourinvestments in school based resources for this Septemberhas been $1.5 million for Science textbooks to supportstudent achievement and $2.0 million for text books forvarious subjects. All of these funds came from ouraccumulated surplus, as directed at the December 14,2010 Board Meeting, for expending this fall. In addition,we have launched our new Community Studies Project inGrades 7 and 10, which will provide students with anunderstanding and appreciation of this province and thisregion and the role Catholic Education has played in the development ofour communities.

Congratulations to Loyola and all of our DP schools for their excellentEQAO results. While we know that EQAO is a snapshot of the students’work it does give us some of the data we need to make decisions aboutprogram improvements and new initiatives needed to improve studentachievement. While the ministry cut budgets in textbooks and technologywe were still able to install 212 Smart Boards in our schools as well asrefresh over 800 computers. A total of 3000 desktops in secondaryschools received memory upgrades.

I have had opportunities of late to see Loyola students present to theboard of trustees the Loyola Link program as well as see Loyola studentsand staff join and support teams, clubs, outreach projects and communityactivities. The Loyola Catholic School Council is always welcomingparents to their meetings and thanks to them for all of their hard work anddedication. As ever, a big thanks to Monsignor Shiels and Father Silviofor their constant support. Congratulations to MPP Harinder Takhar forwinning the Mississauga Erindale seat and Charles Sousa for winningMississauga South seat in the Provincial Election. I look forward toworking with each of them.

Please do not hesitate to contact me. I know it is very early but as I maynot have an opportunity, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2012! Maythe good Lord always hold you in the hollow of his hands.

Loyola Remembers... This past summer, our Loyola community lost two founding members of LoyolaCatholic Secondary School with the deaths of Eileen Fleming & Debbie Courville. Both Eileen & Debbie were at Loyola from the very beginning in 1978.

Eileen Fleming served as our head of guidance from 1978 until her retirement in Juneof 1997. She took the lead in guidance as we became a high school in the mid-1980s.She was a good friend & mentor to so many teachers through the years.

Debbie Courville taught both phys. ed. & French during her 22 years at Loyola. Shewas also our phys. ed. dept head. She coached both basketball & soccer for manyyears. She left Loyola in 2001 to become a consultant in Halton & finished her careerat the Ministry of Education.

Both of these ladies lost their battles with cancer this summer. They both made majorcontributions to education in general & Loyola in particular.

We thank Almighty God for blessing us with their influence & friendship through theyears.

Dufferin-Peel Students Continue toShine on Latest EQAO TestsRecently released EQAO test results for primary (Grades 1-3) and junior (Grades 4-6) assessmentsof reading, writing and mathematics, and the Grade 9 mathematics indicate that Dufferin-Peelstudents continue to meet or exceed provincial averages.

Some of the improvements this year over last year are as high as 6% and 10%. This is great newsfor our students and shines a light on the hard work of faculty, staff, administrators and trustees inaligning system resources to support all learners.

While this year’s results are impressive, results over the past several years provide further evidencethat Dufferin-Peel students continue to improve over time. This is great news, but it doesn’t meanwe cannot do even better. Board staff will further analyze the EQAO results to provide support toschools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in allassessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of itsstudents’ test results, to improve students’ skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategiesto assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve theprovincial standard.

Check your school website, or contact the principal for your school’s EQAO results. Additionalinformation can be obtained through the EQAO website at www.eqao.com.

Loyola Christmas HamperDrive 2011M. Heist, on behalf of the LoyolaChristmas Basket Committee

Preparing Christmas baskets for needy families in ourcommunity is a long-standing tradition at Loyola CatholicSecondary School. Each year, the school receives thenames of families from St. Vincent de Paul Society and from our ownschool community. The staff and students in each homeroom class areasked to contribute to the creation of these baskets. Last year Loyolaraised over $7000 in food, and gift vouchers to help those in need in ourcommunity.

A Christmas hamper will assist families with dinner and gifts throughoutthe holiday season. Since individuals have unique tastes, differentcultural celebrations as well as preference in the purchase of the toy thattheir children are wishing for, we are asking for monetary donation orvouchers to allow the families to purchase their own Gifts, and fooditems. This is not a food drive.

Students and their families can make donations through homeroomclasses. Any corporate sponsorship or donations would be greatlyappreciated. These donations go straight to families in our school andour community. Our chaplain, Mr. D. Smibert and our Youth WorkerMrs. Bishop personally deliver many of the baskets. There is no middleperson. Your contribution goes directly to the families.

The Christmas Hamper Drive will begin on Monday, December 5th andend on Friday, December 16th.

The need at Christmas is always the greatest. Any and all donations canmake a huge difference this Christmas for a family in need. Please help

us make a difference.

Thank you for your support with our Christmas Hamperdrive.

H.O.P.E. is Here The Loyola club called H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere) isback and making a difference in the lives of other people. After somefun getting-to-know-you activities as well as some brainstorming ofideas for charity projects throughout the year, the HOPE calendar isfilling up quickly.

We have already enjoyed some hands-on activities like creating crafts forMeals on Wheels and caring for the Peace Garden in front of the school.

In October, we turned the cafeteria into a giantbakery after school as members formed teamsto bake, from scratch, tasty—and healthy—treats for our annual October Halloween BakeSale to raise money to sponsor two childrenthrough the Chalice Catholic charity. Clubmembers also wrote letters to our adopted

children to make a personal connection.

The club will continue making a difference throughout the semester. Ifyou are interested in seeing what the club is all about, and would like tomeet new people, drop by Tuesday after school in Room 141. Newmembers are always welcome. We meet every Tuesday and we H.O.P.E.to see you there!

DECA DECA DECABy Jakub Stach, student

This year’s DECA is already off to an explosive start. Each year, members of DECA participate in competitions that prepare themfor the business world. The team is focused on training students for oral and written competitions, and helps focus on businessskills such as presentation, confidence, public speaking, and time management. Students are also given in depth knowledge onmarketing as well as different aspects of business, which in turn helps them perform better in class. Members have beensuccessfully participating in the sale of SPC cards within the school community, helping raise funds for the club as well as thevarious charities that it supports. The Written Competitions took place on November 1st and were followed by the Regional OralCompetitions for the Marketing Cluster which took place at Gordon Graydon Secondary School on November 12th. We encourageparents to come out and support the club by participating in the Annual DECA Silent Auction during second semester’s parentteacher night. SPC cards will continue to be sold throughout lunches in front of the cafeteria, and at the business office. The cardsare priced at nine dollars. The club allows students to interact and network with their peers, teachers, business as well as thecommunity at large. Most importantly DECA helps students “Make a Difference”, which is the motto here at LoyolaCatholic Secondary School.

Youth RallyBy E. Fijan

On Thursday, October 13th, a select group of students attended the Mississauga South Family ofSchools Youth Rally at Pope John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre. This event brought togetherstudents from 4 secondary schools and 22 elementary schools to participate in various faith-basedactivities. Students from Loyola had an opportunity to mentor elementary students from St. Louis,St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Helen. After a busy morning of ice-breaker games, everyone wastreated to a performance by the Resurrection Dance Theatre of Haiti. The afternoon was filled withmany fun activities that encouraged the students to focus on the blessings we have in our owncommunities. All of the youth ambassadors were asked to spread what they learned at the rallywithin their school communities. People United for Success and HopeBy Michal Groszek, P.U.S.H. student

P.U.S.H. (People United for Success and Hope) is an alternative setting for students who are in grade 12. We are all leaders, bringing the school community together with the many different types of initiatives that we organize every semester. From“Boy’s Night In” to “Hoopfest”, we are always planning something!

For the 4 years that P.U.S.H has been around, we have planned and executed many events for the school and even thecommunity. Many of you have probably walked by our class, looked in and thought “what do they do in there?” Theanswer is “a lot”. From all of the events we plan, the trips we take, and the involvement in community outreach, we reallyhave our work cut out for us. From the weekly trips to St. Clare to the food drives for the homeless, P.U.S.H. is here tomake Loyola and the community one giant family!

Mississauga-Erindale MPP CandidatesDebate at LoyolaBy E. Odozor

On Thursday, September 29th, all fourMississauga-Erindale provincial candidatesaddressed Loyola students and staff in a town-hallmeeting. The question and answer session, organized by the Teacher-Librarian, Mrs. Odozor, gave our students a closer opportunity to meet thecandidates, hear them share their mandates andwatch them discuss the issues. Our studentsdemonstrated great citizenry. They asked questionsabout the Ontario educational system, employmentand health care. Our students wanted to know eachcandidates stand on Catholic education. Inattendance were David Brown (PC), Otto Casanova (Green), Michelle Bilek (NDP), HarinderTakhar (Liberal), and Sharon Hobbin (Trustee). The session was moderated by Brad Thompson, ourstudent Vice President.

Student VoteProgramBy E. Odozor

Loyola Library once again opened its doors forour students to experience the voting process bygiving them a hands-on experience. 219 Loyolastudents participated in the 2011 Student VoteProgram, a program that educates young peopleabout voting. Since results have shown that lessthan 50% of Canadians participate in theelectoral process, it becomes imperative thatyoung Canadians are reached early in life andgiven the opportunity to develop the habits ofinformed and engaged citizenship. This StudentVote Program helps to create that awareness.

On Friday, October 21st, LIFT – Loyola International Friendship Team – hosted its first meeting in thelibrary. Newcomers, either from a different school or a different country, spent their morning getting toknow one another and learning that being new really isn’t that bad!

The meeting started off with some games and activities, after which everyone was more comfortablewith one another. After the fun activities, we watched a video that showed us other newcomers whoexplained their experiences – both good and bad. The students in the video explained how they gotthrough their first few months in a new school and new country.

Once the video was over, the principal – Mr. Giancola, and the vice-principal – Ms. Antonutti, came tosay hello and welcome us to the school. Mrs. Zagar, Mrs. Barnet, and Mrs. Bishop from Guidance cameto offer their support as well.

To end off our morning, we shared a pizza lunch and took a group photo to celebrateour first LIFT meeting.

LIFT is a student-run program, with the support of the ESL teachers. LIFT aims to make newcomers feel more comfortable as theyadjust to their new lives in Canada. Many exciting and fun activities are coming up this school year.
