.Year 6 Wilson’s Promontory Camp
On Tuesday night I travelled to the Year 6 Wilson’s Promontory Camp. At the time I arrived students were happily enjoying their roast dinner. I think our students were very grateful for such a nice meal. Thanks Mrs Mulqueeny and Mr Friebe for saving me a plate. Yesterday the weather cleared up perfectly for the planned activities that included hiking, surfing, sand sculpting and creative writing just to name a few. Mr Gray has headed down today (Thursday) to get involved in many more of the fun activities planned. I am sure by the time the students return tomorrow
there will be many tired students looking to recover over the weekend.
Putting Pictures on Facebook
All parents are reminded that putting photos of KPS students on Facebook without parent permission is strictly prohibited. If you have uploaded any of our students onto Facebook without parent consent can
you please take them off as soon as possible.
Thank you for your urgent attention on this important matter.
School Council
Next Wednesday March 19th we will be conducting our School Council Annual General Meeting. The A.G.M. is at 7:00 pm in the School Library. At this meeting new office bearers for 2014 will be elected to the various positions. The AGM will be followed by the first meeting of the new School Council. We invite all members of our school community to attend the Annual General Meeting and hear of
our school’s progress during the last year.
School Council Elections
The nomination period has now passed and I can now announce that the number of nominations received has not exceeded the number of positions vacant. Therefore the newly elected members of our School
Council are:
Parent Category members
Jess Beachley, Deborah Lopez-Freeman, Anita Roberts, Jodie Olden
DEECD Category members
Tara Young, Candice Huntley
In making this announcement I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Nigel Kilpatrick and Andrew Newton for their involvement in school council and the support they have given to the school. After many years on school council Nigel and Andrew have decided that they will not be involved in school council in 2014. Both have offered their
ongoing support to the school in various other ways.
School Leaders Badge Presentations
At next Mondays Assembly we will be conducting our school leaders badge presentations. The assembly is expected to run a little longer than usual. On the day we will welcome Mr Bill Jeff’s our previous school principal to present the badges. Our school leaders have been doing an excellent job so far and I am looking forward to
seeing them formerly accept their badges.
Staff Professional Development
Our staff have been involved in a number of professional development activities over the past 2 weeks. A large percentage of staff are working closely with Jacqui Rotthier our school’s learning coach (See Jacqui’s ‘A Word from the Coach’ in this newsletter) Our staff also completed their annual 1st Aid and anaphylaxis refresher
course last Monday.

A word from the coach!
Five weeks in and we are truly up and running with coaching. Teachers have embraced the idea of having a Learning Coach and welcomed me into their classrooms and Department meetings. I consider it a privilege to work alongside these teachers in their space and I value the trust and openness of each one to engage in this powerful type of Professional Development. We have had great professional conversations about effective teaching & learning and what each teacher has identified for their own development. I have been busy demonstrating and observing in the classrooms with a variety of teaching practices for effective literacy learning, including questioning and feedback, explicit ‘teacher talk’ and encouraging ‘student talk’ about What Why and How we are learning, as well as exploring my favourite curriculum area …. Literacy…. Writing, Reading & Word Work! In addition each Department is continuing data review and planning for ex-plicit teaching & learning based on content knowledge and skills & strategies in all areas of the curriculum to meet the specific needs of all students. In my role as Literacy leader, together with Nigel Kilpatrick curriculum leader, we are leading the whole staff in reviewing the KPS Spelling policy and program. All teachers are excited to see ‘polished up’ practices and changes already in what they say and do as well as
their students, which is great feedback on the effectiveness of coaching!
Mrs Jacqui Rotthier
Learning Coach, Literacy and Assessment Leader
Juggling, rapping and 'professional child diving' were just a few of the tricks we were treated to at our first School Incursion on Friday 7th March. Rohan provided an action packed show that gave our students some information about ways they could deal with their feelings of frustration and discomfort as well as ways of dealing with 'bullying'. Simple strategies like 'taking a deep breath' and 'finding a quiet space' were some of the things Rohan spoke about. His demonstrations of perseverance with his juggling were outstanding, really showing the kids that having a go and keeping going when things are not maybe working out as well they could is a good thing. Congratulations to all our stu-
dent 'guest' performers - getting up to help when you don't know what's going to happen is always a very brave move!
