Luck was on our side and we managed to complete all events with only a brief shower during the afternoon. It was terrific to see our younger students being encouraged by senior students as they tried their best to complete the course and gain some house points. There were many highlights and examples of courage, persistence and fine athletic performance. Two highlights stood out for me. One was observing the run of Sam W (5N) in the 11 years, 3km race completing the entire course with a broken arm. Sam won this event with an inspir- ing run. Another courageous achievement that I witnessed was by Elise R-F (Prep R). Earlier this year Elise suf- fered a serious fracture of her leg and has been confined to a wheelchair for a number of months. It was stirring to see Elise get out of her wheelchair to join in the start of the Prep Girls’ event with all of her classmates and friends. Congratulations to all students who took part and sincere thanks to staff and parents who gave great sup- port in supervising, officiating and as spectators around the course. Special thanks to Daniel Zito for his organisa- tion to ensure the smooth running of this event. This Friday around 60 students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will take part in the District Cross Country competition at Macleay Park. Good luck to you all. On Monday evening the first of our Prep Information sessions for parents of children commencing school in 2016 was held. This session was well attended with great interest being shown in our school. I must give high praise to our School Captains, Sofia and Jack on their informative and clear presentations. Many thanks to the Year One parents who provided refreshments for the evening. Thanks also to our Prep Transition coordinators Rebecca Reid and Michelle Freeman and to all staff members who were in attendance. A further information session will be conducted this Saturday morning (16 th May), commencing at 9.30am. Please let any prospective parents know about this opportunity to find out more about Greythorn. As part of the Transition Program, ‘Story Time’ sessions will be conducted in the Playroom next Tuesday 19 th May. As part of Education Week we will be conducting an ‘Open Afternoon’ next Wednesday 20 th May from 2.00pm. Once again this year we are issuing a special invitation to grandparents to attend. Our senior choir will entertain our guests in the hall, where afternoon tea will be provided from 2.50pm. Please look for the special invitation in this Newsletter and pass it on to all grandparents. Many thanks to our PFA members who are providing afternoon tea for this event. We will have an opportunity to say farewell to Kim Bride (now Principal at Ringwood Heights PS) at assembly on Monday 25 th May. We invite parents to stay for a coffee and morning tea after assembly to say goodbye to Kim. Congratulations to: Timothy S (3W) – for his presentation on the piano at Monday’s assembly. His playing gave a clear interpreta- tion of the piece he played called ‘Little Bird’. Year Fives who sang ‘Song of Gold’, which told about the 1850’s gold rush and enabled the Year Fives to re- flect their recent camping experience at Sovereign Hill.

Sports Reports

GIRLS’ NETBALL On Friday the Girls’ Netball team played Balwyn North PS. It was a great game and a really competitive match. Well done girls. In the end we won 8-0. Good luck next week. Georgia G. (Captain) GIRLS’ TEE BALL On Friday the Girls’ Tee Ball team played Balwyn North. We started with a bang and lead after the first innings. Unfortunately we weren’t as strong in the second innings, and ended up losing by a small amount. Everyone had fun though and we played well. Anjali M – 6D. BOYS’ TEE BALL The Boy’s Tee Ball Team played very well and walked away with a strong first innings. The game was much tougher after that, but we still won the match. Sean R – 6M. GIRLS’ SOCCER On Friday the Girls’ soccer team played against Balwyn North PS. In the first half we scored 9 goals leaving us with a confident lead. In the second half our team got tired and only scored 1 goal because their goal keeper set us a harder challenge. Well done to all the girls even our goal keeper who didn’t have to touch the ball. Well done to Anna (5 goals), Jewel (2 goals), Caitlin (2 goals) and Michaela (I goal) and a great team effort. Thanks to Mrs Miller for her umpiring and coaching. By Jewel (Co-Captain)
